Wise Central girls tie Abingdon for first in Mountain 7 District with 50-48 win
ABINGDON, Va. – It was intense, it was physical, it was entertaining, it came down to the wire.
In other words, Wise County Central’s 50-48 triumph over Abingdon was just like every other day in the Mountain 7 District.
Sophomore Hannah Carter scored 17 points to lead the way for the Warriors in Saturday’s marquee matchup between two of the top girls basketball teams in Southwest Virginia.
Central (14-1, 5-1) and Abingdon (13-2, 5-1) are now tied for first place in the district, while Ridgeview (9-5, 3-2) isn’t far behind.
Gate City and Union are in the hunt too in the rugged Mountain 7 District.
“It’s a war every night,” said Central coach Robin Dotson.
The 2017 VHSL 2A state champions, Wise County Central saw its 17-game winning streak snapped on Jan. 12 with a 53-48 loss to Union.
It was quite apparent on Saturday that the Warriors had recovered from that defeat.
“Union deserved to beat us,” Dotson said “It’s a good bounceback win for us, coming over here and getting one against a very good team. It was just a gut-check down the stretch.”
Abingdon held a 35-29 lead early in the second half, but Central responded by closing the third quarter on a 14-4 run to grab a four-point lead.
Abingdon tied the game twice in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons could never regain the lead.
Grace Hess knotted the game at 48 with 30.7 seconds remaining by sinking a 3-pointer, but the Falcons committed two turnovers and missed a shot on their final three possessions.
Hess (15 points) and Emily Breeding (11 points) were the top scorers for Abingdon.
“A couple of the district games we’ve really, really tried to push the pace and we’ve done a good job of that in spurts,” AHS coach Jimmy Brown said. “When we play the halfcourt, grind-it-out [style] that really favors everybody else in this district. It’s hurt us a little bit and it hurt us today.
“The third quarter, I thought we really played to their pace and they got us in a little foul trouble. At the end, we just didn’t execute. We had some shots [in the second half], they just didn’t go down.”
Abingdon has won a bevy of close games this season, including Friday’s 42-40 victory over John Battle. However, the Falcons fell short this time.
“We’ve pulled out quite a few this year,” Brown said. “It’s a little different taste [losing a close game]. But hopefully, we’ll learn from it, get better and put it behind us.”
A Brook Porter free throw with 22.8 seconds left put Central ahead to stay, while Olivia Mullins sank a foul shot with 10.1 ticks remaining.
Carter provided a spark – thanks to her smooth shooting touch – for the Warriors.
“She had a monster game,” Dotson said. “She probably had her worst game of the season against Union, but she kept us in it offensively today.”
Carter approached the much-anticipated contest as a must-win.
“We came in and we were ready to play,” Carter said. “We fought and we gave it our everything.”
Carter gave the Warriors some offensive firepower.
“Sometimes it’s come and go,” Carter said. “I put it my head, ‘When you gotta score, you gotta score.’ “
With post player Dee Cvetnich limited to six points, Carter, Porter (11 points) and Mullins (10 points) made big shots.
“We made the plays when we needed them,” Dotson said. “I’m proud.”
