What started out as a defensive struggle in the first half, exploded wide open in the 2nd half, due to the play of Logan Maiatico, who had 3 rushing touchdowns, a pick 6, and a scoop-and-score, to lead the Hawks to a 44-21 victory over the previously undefeated Brentsville District Tigers on Friday night.

Maiatico got things started in the first quarter with a 37 yard touchdown run to put the Hawks up 7-0 with 3:45 remaining. Brentsville's next two drives ended in punts, but the Hawks next two drives ended with turnovers, so the score remained the same until early in the 2nd quarter when Brentsville, backed up to their 1, attempted a pass which was complete, but tackled in the end zone for a safety, to put Skyline up 9-0.
After the free kick, Skyline could not capitalize on good field position and turned the ball over on downs. Beau Lang continued his stout rushing attack from the quarterback position and moved the ball down the field. Then Guy Hayes took a handoff and ran it in from 33 yards out to cut the lead to 9-7, which was the halftime score.

Things were really looking up for the Tigers as they scored on their first possession of the 2nd half. A long pass from Lang to Jackson Schnetzler set up goal-to-go for Brentsville, and Lang ran it in from 1 yard out to put the TIgers up 13-9.

That is when the offensive explosion began for the Hawks. Skyline mixed runs by Maiatico and and long pass to Aidan Vaught to move the ball down the field, before Darion Santucci ran it in from 8 yards out to give the Hawks the lead again, 16-13, with 5:42 left in the third quarter. Then, 2 plays later, Maiatico intercepted the Tigers pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown. The Hawks were then up 23-13 with 4:39 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

The next Brentsville possession mixed solid runs and passes by Lang, but on 4th down from the Hawks 22, his pass was batted down by Maiatico to end the Tigers drive.

Maiatico continued the scoring with a 30 yard TD run early in the 4th quarter to put the Hawks up 30-13. Then, after a strip by Ethan Caperton got the ball back for the Hawks, Maiatico dashed in again from 31 yards to give Skyline a 37-13 advantage with 7:31 remaining in the game.

Two plays later, Maiatico scooped up a Tiger fumble and returned that for a touchdown to put the Hawks up 44-13 with 6:42 remaining.

Brentsville kept plugging away, and Lang eventually ran it in from 4 yards out with 2:00 remaining, but it was too little, too late for the Tigers, who fall to 4-1. Skyline improves to 4-1. The Hawks finish their regular season on Thursday when they travel to crosstown rival Warren County.

Extremely well written, schoolboard. We thank you.

I watched some of that game. Goochland still looks good, but not as explosive as last year. On a side note, it appears George Mason has booked 6A Langley to juice their power ratings.
