2a title game Graham over Stuarts Draft
2a sleeper Appomattox
2a dark horse TeeJay
1a title game Riverheads over Galax
1a sleeper Narrows
1a dark horse Essex
I read the dark horse as someone that is in the discussion for the most part but not at the tip top of everyone's list. The sleeper to me is the team that every one is overlooking at this point regardless of their accomplishments.
To defend my selections or my omissions.
2A
Graham- is what we think they are, speed and skill all over the field with quality coaching
Stuarts Draft-young but able to score in bunches, above average defense for 2A
Appomattox-starting to gel with athletes all over the field, dangerous come playoff time
TeeJay-more athletes than we thought with enough defense to cause any team to struggle
Ridgeview-wins over JI Burton and Gate City are good but loss to Union and no other quality wins make me pause on jumping on the band wagon just yet
Radford-loss to their one high level opponent scares me, very good team but a close win over a good not great Glenvar team does not bode well deep in post season
Luray/Clarke County/etc-not enough horses to this year to compete deep into the playoffs.
Union-win over Graham was big so they have the potential but too much of a Jekyll & Hyde for me to put them in the state semi's (really close to picking them)
Big R-signature win is over Radford, competed with Bluefield but layed an egg in games with Union and Graham, couple of players/plays away from late Nov
1A
Riverheads-young team defensively that is finding its identity, offense is showing signs of being very diverse when needed
Galax-quality team with plenty of weapons and great coaching
Narrows-speed and instincts on defense with more skill players than they have had in a number of years
Essex-premier 1A school with athletes all over the field with quality coaching
PHGS-more than enough offense to play with anyone in the state, no signature wins so far but very capable team
W&L-a little inconsistent but certainly have playmakers and enough defense to win stay in any game they play
Rappahannock-quality team with playmakers enough to compete, loss to CB was not expected so which team shows up
GW-good talent but mistakes galore and average coaching
Chilhowie-better than expected year considering graduation numbers from last year, loss to Narrows has me pause on them being in the upper tier of teams
Sussex-young team that is coming together but may be a year away from Salem
This is my feeble attempt at justifying who I selected as well as who I left off my list. I think there are a bunch of quality teams right at the edge of being on the state stage but anything can and will happen in the playoffs.
