GIRLS:

John Battle 46, (1A) J. I. Burton 38

Ellie Keene and Colleen Haderer scored nine points apiece, but the big number of the night Thursday was in triple-digits as John Battle picked up a 46-38 victory over J.I. Burton in a non-district game to deliver coach Jeff Adkins win No. 400 across his lengthy high school coaching career.

Adkins has coached both boys and girls, leading teams at Coeburn and Eastside before taking over at Battle in 2016.

Anna McKee also chipped in with five points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans.

Sarah Mullins led J.I. Burton with 15 points.

Marion 72, (1A) Northwood 11

Amber Kimberlin tossed in 17 points as Marion mashed Northwood for a non-district victory.

Kaylee Poston and Audrey Moss added 10 points apiece for the Scarlet Hurricanes, who led 24-1 after one quarter.

(1A) Grundy 57, Richlands 42

Mashayla Belcher tossed in 20 points as Grundy got the best of non-district rival Richlands.

Grundy trailed 36-31 after three quarters, but closed the game on a 26-6 run. Maggie Deel added 10 points for the winners.

Lauren Earls led Richlands with 19 points.

(1A) Honaker 74, Tazewell 62

Sensational sophomore LeeAnna McNulty set a program record with a 40-point outing as the Tigers picked up a seesaw non-district road win.

McNulty also added 14 rebounds to notch a double-double.

Halle Hilton scored 14 points for the Tigers, who fell behind 22-6 after the first quarter and still trailed 39-24 at the half before outscoring Tazewell 23-6 in the third quarter.

Brooke Rowe paced Tazewell with 22 points.

BOYS:

(1A) Northwood 68, Marion 60

Tyler Strong tossed in 26 points and Northwood closed the game on a 15-3 run in taking a non-district victory over Smyth County rival Marion.

Marion led 57-53 entering the fourth quarter, but the Scarlet Hurricanes sank just one field goal in the game’s final eight minutes.

Eli Carter (15 points), Michael Frye (11 points) and Luke Carter (10 points) also had solid games for Northwood.

Caleb Osborne (18 points) and Kyle Robinson (16 points) were the top scorers for Marion.

(1A) Grundy 73, Richlands 71

Blake Meadows hit the game-winning shot with 13 seconds remaining, giving the Grundy Golden Wave a win over the Richlands Blue Tornado.

Meadows had hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 1:16 remaining in a clutch performance. Corey Keene led the Golden Wave with 22 points.

Richlands (2-2) was led by a 19-point performance from Cade Simmons and an 18-point showing from Cade Berry.

(1A) Honaker 92, Tazewell 90, OT

Grayson Honaker poured in 42 points for the Tigers as the Russell County crew survived a hot-shooting night by Tazewell for an overtime triumph in a non-district contest Wednesday night.

Brett Boyd (17 points), Trajon Boyd (16 points) and Luke Goodie (11 points) also made major contributions for the Tigers.

Tazewell knocked down 13 3-pointers, including six by Jamir Blevins who led the Bulldogs with 23 points.
