Who will be the teams to beat?

William Fleming still strong?

Graham still state bound?

Any idea what Salem looks like?

WB and LB still formidable?

LCA three peat?

Glenvar?

Graham lost a lot to graduation, but has most of the line on both sides of the ball returning and some very talented sophomores coming up and an even better class of freshmen coming up (could be one of the best freshmen classes that Graham has ever had). I look for Graham to be right in the mix for a title again this year and for the next few years in the foreseeable future. This is the year to knock them off, because of the youth, but come playoff time, they will be right in the hunt. The next 3 years after that, if everybody sticks with it, they should have some of the best teams to come through Graham High School.

Glenvar returns a lot and may be the odds on favorite early on, but I expect Graham to be right there with them at the end of the season.

I don't know about the other teams, but Salem will depend on what they have on the OL/DL and on defense. QB- (Jr) Tanner Overstreet will be a new starter, but I like what I have seen from him on JV. Solid passer and a good scrambler as well. WR- (Sr) Coen Logan will be his deep target. Solid RB play from (Jr's) Kyshead Arrington & Jordan McCadden. Secondary should be solid with Logan, McCadden, & Jones returning.

I think if they can find replacements on the lines to mesh with returners Lynch, Millard, James, then they will be at least as good as last year. Looking forward to 7v7 and workouts to see the newbies.

Salem ran a counter play straight out of a Delaware wing t playbook (without the wing) last year a lot, is that tradition for them?

Sincerely asking, play would probably be written up something like “pro right-a strong-25 counter”. Probably have some history of doing that in the 90’s but they never really ran that concept in the mag era.

Anyways. Mules are gonna mule. No doubt.

Also, my love of JV sports has now evolved to baseball. Salem’s JV baseball team had back to back dingers tonight against magna Vista. Kiwanis Field is beautiful.

Just curious...and OT. But has there ever been any talk with Graham consolidating with other schools down your way? I don't know how that all works together jurisdictionally from a county/city school consolidation standpoint, but I was just curious.

It's pretty desolate in that area and I reckon the exodus is still fairly steady. I think the upcoming Southern Gap High School is the next birth from school consolidation down there unless I'm wrong.

There has been talk of combining Graham, Richlands and Tazewell into 2 schools, instead of 3 that we have in Tazewell County for years and years. I'll believe it when I see it. Now, I'm hearing the 3 High Schools will remain and the elementary schools will be consolidated in the county down from 6 or 7 to 3. That to me would make more sense. Tazewell County is a big County and some of the folks here live in remote, areas The travel distance for them would be tough if there were only 2 High Schools. The enrollment at Graham has been pretty steady over the last 20 years or so, Tazewell and Richlands are starting to level out and have been consistent the past few years. Although, they have dropped quite a bit over the past 20 years. I think all 3 schools will remain 2A, with Graham and Tazewell straddlíng the cutoff line to 1A pretty consistently. Richlands is still firmly in 2A and I see that continuing for a while.

Teams to beat:

3C: LCA and Heritage
3D: Magna Vista
4D: Toss-up here with Salem, JF, Glass, and GW. All these teams are good and could do something special. One of these 4 squads will win the region.

Some other thoughts of mine:

1) Salem will be Salem. Tough schedule, but will outwork and out discipline every team they face, and translate it into a deep playoff run like we normally see from that squad.

2) The Roanoke area "Williams" both fall off a little from last season. Byrd finishes regular season 7-3 and gets crushed in the playoffs by a Botetourt team looking to avenge the region championship loss last season. Fleming finishes regular season 8-2 and takes a quiet exit in the second round.

3) Magna Vista wins 3D.

4) LCA struggles offensively to start the season without Gideon, but gets stronger as the season progresses. A 3-peat is possible, but another championship win is a much longer shot than the past 2 seasons have been for them. They finish the regular season 8-2.

5) Liberty-Bedford wins it's first game in a very loooooong time?

6) Graham will be in the hunt for a ring this year, and will be very good for a few years.

Thomas Jefferson and Armstrong high are moving down to 2A also . That should add some excitement. They will have to deal with Strasburg , Poquoson , and those heavy run teams before they get Graham or Glenvar tho . Kettle Run is run heavy and they handled TJ in the playoffs so they gotta worry about that first. Glenvar losing some guys but that Qb is still there - Graham returns a good solid structure of guys still . They prob have the best sophomore class in the state! Radford lost a couple guys to the portal lol , Union has a good group coming back . Tazewell will be run heavy with that new coach and that will fit their style of kids better.

Where are Radford guys going in the portal? That’s literally the best football program in the NRV right now.
