How’d the Spartans look, for a first scrimmage?
They struggled quite a bit up front with that new OL and some of the fullbacks had issues as well. A lot of runs were stuffed for no gain or a loss. When they got it right it (which wasn't very many times) it almost always went for a huge gain or TD. Salem's athletes were just on different level in the open field. Zavione Wood is about 15 pounds heavier than last year and quite a bit faster. He scored on really long run that probably would have just went for a decent gain a year ago. Persinger had a few long runs from the fullback position as well.

Chaney looked really good throwing the ball when they didn't blow assignments in pass pro up front (there were a few jailbreak sacks/QB hits). Had a few more deep passes and short ones that should have been caught... definitely had quite a few drops today but they also hit on some big plays... especially to Collins.

The defense almost gave up a few long passes early that were just out of reach but they played lights out after that. Salem actually got a defensive safety on a drive that Brookville started from there own 30-yard line. I would say that Brookville had close to -50 yards of offense the second half of the first team's scrimmage. The entire defense is incredibly fast.

Brookville is really big up front on both sides of the ball and were pretty good at stopping the run but they don't have really explosive skill position players like they did last year.

If Persinger and Wood in at same time, probably run more split backs because either one can break one.

Shabutie's analysis is good.

Quick answer is, I don't remember Salem ever looking that good in the first scrimmage against Brookville as they did tonight.

Salem has work to do on the offensive line as Brookville did look really good up front on the defensive line. I just didn't see the normal speed or aggressiveness out of Brookville. Just my opinion, but I think Brookville will just be an average team at best this year. Of course it was just the first scrimmage so they have time to work out the kinks.
