The Roanoke Times showed their Volleyball Top Ten List in last Monday's newspaper and I'd propose a few changes so here's my list of the Top 2010 Volleyball Teams in Southwest and Central Virginia:

1. Hidden Valley
2. Cave Spring
3. Jefferson Forest
4. Patrick Henry
5. Blacksburg
6. Lord Botetourt
7. Carroll County
8. Franklin County
9. James River
10. North Cross
*** Others To Watch: Northside, Roanoke Catholic, Radford.

I'm sure this list will look different by the end of the season. What does everyone else think? What teams are too high or too low or missing entirely? Post your own list or just post your proposed changes...

After seeing several of the teams noted I will take a stab:
1. Cave Spring
2. Jefferson Forest
3 Patrick Henry
4. Blacksburg
5. Hidden Valley
6. Lord Botetourt
7. James River
8. Franklin County
9. North Cross
10. Roanoke Catholic
Have not seen Carroll County.

Again things can change, but everyone has a guess. This is mine.

New updated rankings for today

3. Blacksburg
4. Hidden Valley
5. James River

Seems your rankings only include what is considered Roanoke area teams. Yes I'm from Galax, and I'm not saying they should be on the list; but there are teams outside of the Roanoke area that are really good. Just wondering on your rankings ?

As original post references, this was an attempt to improve on the Roanoke Times' Top 10 list. various versions have included teams from Roanoke, Lynchburg, and the New River Valley as well as Botetourt, Carroll, and Franklin Counties. It is certainly not intended to exclude any other deserving teams in SW/Central Virginia. I'm personally not aware of any other teams from this geography that should be included but please share if you know of others to be considered as I'm sure we are missing some quality teams.

rkesportsfan, I was not referencing your original post. I meant volleydad's rankings. Sorry I should have made it clear which rankings I meant. No your rankings do include teams outside of Roanoke. Radford and Galax could possibly be added but I'm not sure if they are top 10. Would love to see an updated list with records.

Here's my new list as of 9/24/10:

1. Hidden Valley (9-0)
2. Jefferson Forest (13-0)
3. Cave Spring (4-1)
4. Blacksburg (9-3)
5. Patrick Henry (4-4)
6. Franklin County (6-5)
7. Carroll County (11-0)
8. James River (8-2)
9. North Cross (9-0)
10. Roanoke Catholic (10-3)

Others To Watch
---------------
EC Glass (7-3)
Northside (5-6)
Lord Botetourt (7-4)
Christiansburg (8-2)
Martinsville (7-0)
Galax (13-1)
Craig County (9-1)
Salem (5-5)
Radford (5-4)

I don't know anything about them this year as they are all well outside our local newspaper's coverage area. Tell us what you know.

Northwood is always a tough team from that area. Not really sure of their record as of right now. I do know they have a new coach who started his coaching career in Galax, then went to Grayson; before landing the job in Nortwood. He will have a championship caliber team there in short work, if he doesn't already !!!

Wondering 4-1, 4-4,and 6-5 teams above some teams with better records ? This would be mine based solely on win/loss record.

Jefferson Forest 13-0
Carroll Co. 11-0
Hidden Valley 9-0
North Cross 9-0
Martinsville 7-0
Galax 13-1 only loss to Carroll
Craig 9-1
C-burg 8-2
Roanoke Cath. 10-3
B-burg 9-3

This does not include teams from far SW Virginia because they are usually not considered Roanoke/New River Valley teams. This is also based solely on team records according to previous post.

I based my list on which teams were best regardless of their win-loss records. In other words, if these teams played head-to-head, who would likely win? That's why teams like Cave Spring and Blacksburg and Patrick Henry are higher on the list than some teams with better records who may play much easier schedules. Just my two cents...

Understandable but unfortunatly some teams don't get to go head to head or face tougher schedules. Your list is very acceptable. I was just wondering how you come up with them.

Just to follow up on my first post, this is my guess, based on teams I've seen, I am sure there are others, not trying to slight anyone, but overall records are not the only factor.
1. Jefferson Forest
2. Cave Spring
3. Hidden Valley
4. Roanoke Catholic
5. Blacksburg
6. James River
7. Glenvar
8. Patrick Henry
9. Lord Botetourt
10. North Cross

The next few weeks will be interesting. JF really very little competition, River Ridge started play, positions will be changing. HV beat BBurg fairly easy last night.

Don't know about Coeburn's current status or what their schedule has been like. They were undefeated for a good while. These are some of the best volleyball teams in far SW Virginia (and a couple of the best in the state, especially GC).
