Since there wasn't a Richlands/Union thread...score was not indicative of how close the game was. Came down to the last 2 minutes with Richlands down 7 and getting the ball back deep in their own territory. A pick 6 provided the final score.

I listened to this game on WGTH. The radio announcers for Richlands are the top 3-5 best I've ever heard at the High School Level. What is sounded like to me.....the difference in the game was Unions ability to run the football with that big line that sounded like Richlands had some trouble up front defensively.

Also and finally, I suspect the body slam like tackle garnered some chatter out West between the two schools as the Richlands color guy hinted at possible ejection of the Union defender that made the tackle. Looking at the tackle on twitter, it was ABSOLUTELY TEXTBOOK in my opinion. Not only should the player had Not been ejected (which he wasn't), he should Not have even been flagged. That was actually a poor call. You are taught, head in the chest, drive the opponent with the legs and tighten your gluts and drive through the opponent. He did exactly that. Yep, it looks graffic and uncomfortable for fans, but folks, that tackle is not just legal, it's textbook.

Very bad officiating all night for both teams, but I think Union got the worst of it. The 15 yarder for that tackle was one. The muffed punt was by far the worst. Total incompetence. Blew the whistle before the play was dead, couldn't determine possession, so had to re-kick.

We pretty much confirmed what we already knew. Richlands line needs work and Union's pass coverage needs improvement.

Great atmosphere!

And the play by play guy for Richlands is a bit of a homer, as he should be, but he's VERY good.

Here's a write up...

The muffed punt call would have been a HUGE controversy had Richlands won. It was horribly botched, the official blew the play dead for some reason when the ball was live and Union recovered. Union was forced to rekick, but the defense came up with a big play and picked off Moir for the second time and returned it for a TD to seal the win.
The lack of a running game really hurt Richlands, they were held to 50 yards in less than 3YPC and allowed the Union defenders to focus on rushing the passer.
Union is still incredibly one dimensional but it's working so far, completing one pass but it was a big one, a 70 yard TD pass to Jenkins.
Union is very good on both sides of the LOS and are still monsters stopping the run, but Bears will have to continue to develop the passing game and continue to tighten up the secondary If they want another deep run.
But it's a huge win, it could be the difference between hosting and traveling for a playoff game if nothing crazy happens.

Now everyone is looking forward to Union @ Ridgeview in a couple weeks, looks to decide the M7 champ, depending on how Abingdon fares. Central, GC, JSB and Lee aren't contenders at all.

Not a couple of weeks... NEXT week. ;)

I'm not so sure you wanna be in a big hurry, this Union team has came together much smoother than I expected. Going to Clintwood and winning will certainly be a stiff task, but I'm more confident now than I was before the season where I had kinda assumed it to be a loss.

Trust me... I ain't saying a word. After next Friday, then I'll talk about it. :)
