The showcase game of the Highland Springs Winter Showcase featured two of the top teams in their Region. Maury lost in the State quarterfinals last year and won the State championship as recently as 2019. Varina lost to eventual State champion Hampton in the Class 4 semi-finals after winning back-to-back State titles in 2022 and 2023.
Maury took an early lead 7-6 after a three by senior Adrean Newton. But that would be the Commodores last lead. Varina would score the next 12 points and led 18-9 after the 1st quarter. Senior Dominic Pleasants found Caleb Straughter for a breakaway dunk to extend the margin to 20-9.
Sophomore Tabren Hawkins scored seven in the 2nd quarter to help Maury trim the margin to 32-25 at halftime.
Sophomore Brian Mitchell scored six of his team high 20 points in the 3rd quarter. His lay-up increased the Blue Devils lead to 44-30 late in the 3rd quarter. Mitchell also led Varina with 9 rebounds and 2 assists.
Maury got the lead down to seven (52-45) with three minutes remaining but did not score the rest of the game. Newton scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the final eight minutes. Hawkins added 10 points and senior Zachari Owens chipped in 5 points and 7 rebounds.
Varina received 10 points and 5 rebounds from senior Cameron Fleming. Both Slaughter and Pleasants had eight points each.
