Predictions Hatfield's Week 6 VHSL Dynamic Dozen Picks (10.4.24)

Well, one game of the Dynamic Dozen did not happen - Buckingham/Lunenburg - as it got postponed to later in the month of October...

So considering we picked 13 the week before, I guess it evens out.

A 10-1 mark turns out to be the best we've had all year. We're hoping that mid-season form continues as we move into October...

Hat's Dynamic Dozen Picks from Week 5 - 10-1 ( (90.9%)
Hat's Dynamic Dozen Selections for 2024 Season - 43-17 (71.7%)

Our Selections for Week 6 will be in the next post shortly!

Final Graham 27, Va High 14

From a Radford fan I'm also worried about Graham because I wouldn't want to be the team that plays them. Defense wins titles and Grahams defense might be the best they've had in over 30 years. I don't see anyone moving the ball on them or any teams offense scoring over 10 pts. Graham's scores will not be as wide of victory margins this year, but it will not matter. 49 to 13 looks great compared to 28-7 but the truth is, the team with 7 has little chance of moving the ball. If you look at how many yds per game Graham is giving up, it's alarmingly low and for Graham, might be historic low and having to go back all the way to 1989. Their defense is that good this year
I’ve watched Graham play 3 games now. In the games that I have watched them dominate defensively, the opposing teams appear to be really 1 dimensional. I am anxious to see Glenvar play Radford, Floyd, and Allegheny. Right now though, Graham hasn’t played an offense like Glenvar has yet this year. Well balanced, mixing it up, with multiple players that can score from anywhere on the field. Glenvar arguably has the best Quarterback in 2A right now. 6’5 runs well and throws dots. If he is on he’s going to be difficult to beat.

I agree that defense wins championships. If both of these teams continue playing well I think they meet in the State Semis.

Glenvar @ Radford

Thoughts?

Glenvar appears to be rolling. They have a very good throwing mobile Quarterback, 2-3 Running Backs and a host of receivers. They have been dominant on the ground and through the air. What has impressed me most this year though is their defense. They’ve allowed 1 score on a busted play in the Blacksburg game if memory serves.

Glenvar is coming off a bye week though and Radford is coming off a tough loss to Allegheny.

My take: If Glenvar comes out early and scores often they win. However, if they take the first half off which I have seen them do in previous years after a bye week then this game may be closer than anticipated.

Prediction: Glenvar 35 Radford 7

Hayfield back in the news..

I agree that Public School sports would crumble if only licensed educators were allowed to coach. Most of the teachers I know are working second jobs after school for extra income. Coaching stipends wouldn’t cover what they would lose. Hard enough finding quality coaches now, imagine what the on field play would look like if you cut the coaching talent pool in half.

Anytime you work with or around children a background check should be mandatory, volunteer or paid.
Coaching for most sports has become a year-round commitment. Most teachers can't do that and shouldn't be expected to do it.

Salem 42 Hidden Valley 6 Halftime

I think #78 James blocked it up the middle.
I think its funny when a team wins 56-6 and everyone is complaining about the defense. How about we give credit to the opponents. Salem has also held most of their opponents to their season lows. PH only had 3 points in the 4th until they scored a few times when the game was obviously over. WF low score is 25. LCA low score is 34 one point less that the Salem game. As of now Northside low score was vs Salem.

I'd like to agree with this but then HS sports would crumble. We can barely fill the buildings with certified people and extending that to the coaches would be impossible. Just need a better way to vet who gets brought on and have a strict no tolerance policy. Which at least in this case seems to be happening. But I think Coach Overton needs to have a complete overhaul to his program before it comes crashing down.
Gotta at least monitor who they get to lead our young men. One of Overton’s best players is fighting a gun case now. The accountability aspect of coaching has fallen to winning games, how many kids you can send to college and who can get the best players to transfer to their program. It’s bull jive bro… We’re seeing too many young people have their life taken (literally and figuratively) in our area each day because of lack of leadership. Enough is enough bro. Gotta get real men leading and holding our kids accountable.

I came *this* close to throwing hands with some "fans" a few years ago. 2016, I think. We have to broadcast in the home stands and a couple of juiced fans were leaning in and trying to scream into my headphone mic. A Sheriff's Deputy saved one of them from a concussion. I had grabbed a large battery and had resolved to knock the sht out of the next one that leaned in.

Think it’s time for VA to crackdown and make the requirements for any head/assistant coaches to work in public education or for that locality’s government. None of that school security/cafeteria monitor bull jive either…If you need a teachers’ license and degree to teach, school counseling, or admin, you should have the same credentials as a coach working with middle/high school student athletes.
