75 boyz are back

You’re 100000% correct about Dinwiddie being completely homegrown and not benefiting from a larger pool of talent.

The thing about Maury they’re really an all star team with kids from Va Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake on the team. But they all played together in a rec league team that’s why i don’t mind it all. But the guy who got those kids there is no longer at Maury he’s now at Granby.

Phoebus is a lot different. All the players have been in program since day 1. Maybe a couple times we take a kid in from another school but it’s for a reason. If Phoebus were a true all star team we could’ve really combined teams with Warwick for example but that will never happen. I’m not denying that Phoebus has not benefited from having academies but Blunt built this program to what it is.
In your opinion what will it take for the other PD schools to start making some noise? It can't be they all are just lacking athletes. Is coaching in the area currently bad?

75 boyz are back

This is an interesting topic. Offer no excuses about the Friday night result. The Dinwiddie fans were fully aware of what could happen and it did. Our "small" 40 homegrown kids got a full dose of D1 power five talent and took our tail beating.

I do find it interesting that every team mentioned is an all star team from its surrounding area. Not going to deny the fact that the 757 is loaded with talent.
Throughout the state the better teams mentioned can easily reload with transfers/open enrollment.

@BoKnowsSports you mentioned Churchland beating Hopewell. Can you fathom how good the Truckers would be if they would not have lost their best players to Maury. Two of them just destroyed Dinwiddie.

I am not trying to pick on the 757 nor am I whining. People, right or wrong 22 really good kids have transferred to Maury in 2 years. Hell a prominent Maury person acknowledged this fact before the game and even said "We only got seven transfers in this year". Just seven? He further noted the Commodore's did lose a few backups to Granby. Freedom Woodbridge/Hayfield 15-17 Huguenot 16-18. Even Phoebus has acknowledged kids leaving other Hampton schools and playing for Phoebus.

There is a reason, most (not all) of the Hampton, Portsmouth, and Norfolk schools are struggling to compete. Stick your chests out if you want, but ask yourself could my team dominate like this with kids zoned in my area?

The member schools/VHSL are waking up and growing tired of the AAU style recruitment. There is a lot of in fighting in both of the 757 and 804 regions right now regarding this matter and the fallout is right around the corner. Win while you can.

My Personal Top 10

The War Eagles of Rye Cove (when level headed) are one of the stingiest defensive teams I've seen. The offense has multiple weapons that can unleash terror at any given moment. They lost a key player to a broken collarbone, but his backup(s) played great this week. It will be interesting to see the match up between the War Eagles and Eastside Spartans coming up here very soon. I still believe the two teams out east have the upper hand, but these boys from FAR Southwest Virginia are going to be a tough out this year.
The Qb for Rye Cove is a very good athlete. I haven't seen a whole game of theirs yet, but I have seen some.

No Graham at Union thread?

Good, physical game from both teams. Penalties hurt Graham and took away a few good plays. Penalties also hurt Union and put them in some tough holes to try to dig out of
If Graham can fix the penalties and the offense can work out the kinks, I think they have a good shot at the regional championship game and an equally good shot to win. If they play Union again, it’s tough to beat a quality opponent twice in the same season.

Wilson/Riverheads Game Highlights Shenandoah's First Big Weekend

For the first four weeks of the season, the seven Shenandoah District teams have played a wide variety of non-district games and for the most part they have been successful. Only Waynesboro has a losing record at this point and the other six teams have played well and each one still has high hopes for the rest of the season and of course playoff action beyond that.

As for district competition, only one game has been played so far that counts in the standings and that was Fort Defiance's 35-21 win over Riverheads. So at this point, the Indians are technically in first place and Riverheads is sitting at the bottom at 0-1. The other five are of course 0-0 in district play.

But starting this Friday things will change on a weekly basis as we will have three district games most weekends, requiring a seventh team to be the odd man out and either play another non-district game or not play at all. To get the party started, this week's games feature Wilson traveling to Riverheads, Waynesboro at Buffalo Gap, and Stuarts Draft making a trip into Staunton. Fort Defiance has a non-district date at Madison County. So shall we start the dialogue about how we think those games will go?

WILSON AT RIVERHEADS: This is definitely the feature game on the docket so if you are a neutral fan who just picks the best game to go to, this will be the one this Friday. As well-publicized the Gladiators suffered an uncharacteristic loss on Friday the 13th to Fort Defiance, when they simply could not contain the Indians' potent passing attack. As a result, the Big Red will have to win out the rest of the season and hope that someone can knock off the Indians if they hope to retain the district title that has been residing in Greenville the last several years. It will be Homecoming at Riverheads and as you know, those games can sometimes be more of a distraction than anything. Providing the opposition will be arch-rival Wilson, another team that likes to pass the ball. The Hornets have exceeded expectations so far this season and this will be their best chance in years to knock off Riverheads. If RHS can get its running game going and either slow down or stop the aggressive Hornets, then the Big Red can win and stay in the race. But Wilson will no doubt come into this one fired up, hoping to leave Greenville with a big win. Don't be surprised if this one comes down to a final possession or an extra point miss or make. Of course I have to go with the home team but this one should be a slobberknocker, as Coach Casto used to say.

STUARTS DRAFT AT STAUNTON: At the beginning of the season, each of these teams looked like contender-material on paper. Since neither one has played a district game yet, they each are still of course in the race. But from reading stories of all the games I have to give the edge to the visiting Cougars in this one. Staunton is 2-2 on the season but their two wins have been over very weak teams. The Cougars are 3-1 and have played the tougher schedule. This one could be close but a more realistic expectation is a 2-3 TD win for the Draft.

WAYNESBORO AT BUFFALO GAP: The Bison, like Wilson, have been a huge surprise this season. They keep winning games by huge margins and in their only loss, they played respectably on the road against a strong Clarke County team. They will have no trouble with Waynesboro Friday, but after that one, all eyes will be on the Bison in the coming weeks to see if they are the real deal.

FORT DEFIANCE AT MADISON COUNTY: As mentioned, the Indians are leading the race by virtue of that big win over Riverheads. However, the playoff seeding at the end of the year is based on a point system and we have to remember that they lost their first two games of the season. So if they were to lose at Madison Friday and perhaps one more down the road, a 6-4 record would likely still get them in the playoffs, but probably not a home game or desirable seed. On the other hand, if they run the table, they should be in great shape for the playoffs. They beat Madison last year at the Fort but the Mounties won at Staunton earlier this year and they are tough at home. The Fort should prevail but if so, they might need another 35 point game, or even higher, to get the job done.

75 boyz are back

Essentially this was my point when I posted something on the Hayfield thread. People point fingers at Coach O and Hayfield but what about Highland Springs, what about Maury, what about Huguenot on and on. There’s several other programs in the state doing this and are flying under the radar. Time is ticking before it all gets exposed and the vhsl actually does something.

Finally somebody speaks on those schools that feel holier than thou

75 boyz are back

Great post Navy! Maury, Hayfield, Phoebus, Highland Springs, Huguenot, etc are all, all star teams. It’s a huge reason why there’s no parity in VA high school sports. As bad as the Hayfield “scandal” is, look at the John Marshall bull jive in basketball. That’s a literal AAU team (Team Loaded) playing Clarke County, Tazewell, Nottoway, Martinsville, etc in basketball. It’s wild to me. On top of everything the play has fallen off tremendously and these schools want $8-$10 per ticket for regular season games now. Kids just don’t give the same pride and effort anymore, especially if they feel like they’re going up against a better opponent. I’m just fortunate I have a VHSL pass. I went to a local volleyball game and tickets were $8. It’s insane the state of high school sports in our state. It’s not about the kids anymore.
I’m seeing that a lot of schools are all doing the same thing just to a different degree. County schools for years have used their “speciality centers” as ways to get athletes that live in the county but not in their zone into their schools.
