Predictions Hatfield's VHSL Region Championship Picks for Tuesday 2/28/23 + Recap of Monday Region Finals of 2/27/23

The final Monday of February 2023 did not disappoint for storylines when it comes to VHSL Region Basketball Playoffs. Even though only one of the five region title games was decided by one possession – Oscar Smith rallying from down as many as eight in the first half to edge Landstown 44-42 to end a four-game playoff losing streak in the head-to-head series – there were a couple of exceptional scoring outbursts and a stunner.

As for the individual scoring exploits, two young men in Richmond – both juniors – absolutely shined as defending State Champs Varina and Highland Springs out of the Capital District reigned supreme.

Varina 5-foot-9 guard Kennard ‘K.J.’ Wyche Jr. had a monumental performance with a career-high 41 points, including 12-of-14 at the foul line to go with splashing five three-pointers, as the Blue Devils erased an early 12-1 deficit to topple Matoaca 77-66 for the Region 4B crown.

Over in Region 5C, it was a re-match of a year ago with Highland Springs taking down Glen Allen 70-53 behind 6-foot-4 Danzelle Bullock-Coles pouring in a whopping 32 points. The Region 5C Player of the Year who recently eclipsed 1000 career points on his game-winner in the regular season finale vs. Hopewell bunched 18 of those points before the half-time break.

In terms of the shocker, No. 6 seed Green Run – which began the playoffs at a meager 9-13 overall – captured its third regional title in four seasons as Kenneth Harris moved to 4-0 in the playoffs against his former J.V. Coach, Corey Coffer of Princess Anne. Harris’ top-seeded Stallions not only beat Princess Anne, they simply manhandled them to the tune of 75-50 to avenge their two regular season losses, one of which came in overtime at the start of February.

Green Run starts two sophomores – point guard Kass Jackson and forward David ‘Trey’ Miller – in its starting lineup while also playing a couple of freshmen extended minutes, so the Virginia Beach program figures to be contending for years to come. The 75 points scored marked their second highest of the season, plus was a major uptick offensively from the disappointing six first half points in the regional semis vs. Salem, and the 75 allowed by PA was easily the most they’ve surrendered the whole campaign.

This also continues the zaniness of playoff success for lower seeds out of Region 5A, where Salem of Virginia Beach won the tourney as a No. 8 seed in 2018, Bayside accomplished the same feat as a No. 7 seed last year, and now Green Run gets it done as a No. 6 seed – all under the .500 mark.

Another game that featured two teams squaring off for a third time featured Three Rivers District rivals Radford and Floyd County hooking up at the Dedmon Center at Radford University for the Region 2C title. Rick Cormany’s Bobcats prevailed 57-46 behind 26 points from Elijah Kelly and 21 from Gavin Cormany, both juniors.

Just three region title games to wrap up the playoffs at this level before State Tournament games begin on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Below, we highlight how the Predictions did from Monday…

6A = 0-1 (missed on Oscar Smith/Landstown)
5A = 0-1 (missed on Green Run/Princess Anne)
5C = 1-0
4B = 1-0
