Baseball/Softball on our Football thread

Please forgive me, but we all know thar the football threads are 100 times more active than the other threads.

I have a real simple question that I hope doesn’t get controversial. Why is Hanover so consistently good in these two sports year after year after year?

(A quick congrats to those amazing Louisa Girls for what they accomplished this season!) (And for the Hanover Boys as they continue their dominance!)

Playoff Droughts

Inspired by a sports radio show I was listening to the other day on NFL playoff droughts.

What better time to talk about these things than now? The season is on the horizon, getting closer everyday and once the season gets here we will be talking games, players, etc... lost will be subjects like this so lets dive into the Class 4 teams.

These teams have gone the longest without even making the playoffs!

2011 for Park View (Sterling)
2016 for Denbigh
2017 for Charlottesville, Dominion & Jamestown.
2018 for Courtland, George Wythe (Richmond) & Gloucester.

See any of these teams busting through in 2023?

As for teams with the longest losing streak in the playoffs?

Halifax has not won a playoff game since winning it all in 1991, 9 straight losses.
Orange hasn't won a playoff game this century, 8 straight losses going back to 1998.
Powhatan surprisingly enough has 8 straight losses dating back to 2011.
John Handley has dropped 7 straight dating back to 2010.
Huguenot's last playoff was back in 2005, 6 straight losses.

See any of these teams snapping their streak in 2023?

Piedmont District 2023

Who’s taking it this year?

Patrick County gone and Mecklenburg is playing a full district schedule.

My predictions:

1. GW- very hard ood schedule. Dinwiddie, Glass and Amherst. Mori Dixon will get them over the hump in most district games. 7-3 is likely, but 8-2 or better, I like them competing to get back to the region championship game.

2. Magna Vista- really like Simeon Moore (he’s going to be the next major D1 athlete out of Southside after Dixon graduates) and Ethan Stockton (reigning Piedmont Defensive Player of the Year). It’s been a while, but the Warriors could be back to region contender status.

3. Martinsville/Bassett- Toss up. Hairston (Bassett) and Jones (Martinsville) were 2 of the top 3 best players in the district last year. Both gone. Martinsville returns more, but won’t have the depth Bassett has. I believe Martinsville will make a run in their region this year.

5. Mecklenburg- undisciplined play was a big reason they were bad. They look the part and has a good mix of size and athleticism. Maybe, the biggest team in the district. I’m not drinking the Kool Aid just yet.

6. Halifax- Maybe Senseney can turn it around.. Halifax is a lot like GW. Great athletes, but normally struggles with physicality in the trenches and tackling. I’m a big fan of Josh Miller who is the Blue Comets RB. He just committed to William and Mary to play football.

7. Tunstall- Brice Poole is a very talented football but Tunstall will be a bad football team. Kid will be the team. Really no reason for them to be so bad. Big, country kids and they have a good feeder program.

These teams have gone the longest without even making the playoffs!

2009 for Osbourn Park
2011 for McLean
2013 for Thomas Jefferson (Alexandria)
2014 for Potomac
2015 for Annandale

As for teams with the longest losing streak in the playoffs?

8 straight losses for Herndon whose last win was in 1985! Nearly 40 years ago!
7 straight losses for Gar-Field and George Marshall who last tasted victory in 2007.
7 straight losses for Thomas Edison going back to 2008.
6 straight losses for Meadowbrook whose last win was in 2008.
6 straight losses for Wakefield going back to 2014.
6 straight losses for Cosby whose last win in the playoffs was 2015.

See any of these teams snapping these streaks in 2023?

My visit to Staunton this weekend.

We came with friends to take a ride on the Virginia Scenic Railway out of Staunton. I highly recommend it. But you will have to watch their website closely. Every single seat is booked for this season, which runs into July. At some point in the near future, they will open booking for the fall season. I highly suggest you take a trip.

The Serendipity Coffee Shop across from the train station has some of the best cinnamon buns that I’ve ever eaten.

The folks that I was with are not football people like all of us, so I didnt bother them to drive over to the various high school football fields, but I was close to Staunton, Buffalo Gap, Stuart’s Draft, and Riverheads. And Gunz, I know that I didn’t get prior approval to be in your neck of the woods, so I appreciate that you didn’t have me arrested.

We are headed to Verona to some mega antique place now. Not my cup of team, but I’m just along for the ride. And hey, it ain’t football, but it beats working.
