1A Football Race

CLASS 1, REGION A: (Standings prior to Essex's victory over Northumberland and Charles City's loss to John Marshall on Monday)

1) Essex 24.0 (5-0, vs. Colonial Beach Friday)
2) Westmoreland 18.0 (3-2, at Northumberland Friday)
3) Northumberland 17.75 (3-1, vs. Westmoreland Friday)
4) King & Queen Central 16.5 (5-1, at West Point Friday)
5) West Point 16.286 (5-2, vs. King & Queen Central Friday)
6) Rappahannock 14.333 (3-3, at Lancaster Friday)
7) Northampton 11.8 (2-3, at Portsmouth Christian Friday)
8) Middlesex 10.0 (2-4, at Charles City Friday)
***
9) Lancaster 9.667 (1-5, vs. Rappahannock Friday)
10) Colonial Beach 8.667 (0-6, at Essex Friday)
11) Charles City 7.5 (0-5, vs. Middlesex Friday)

ANALYSIS: One of the best things about this region is, down the stretch, you'll get a bunch of games involving teams within the region, which isn't always the case with regular seasons still by and large dominated by "district play" when districts have not had any other relevance for nearly a decade. Essex's large lead will only grow when their Monday win over Northumberland is added into the equation. Northumberland can bounce back, and stay in the race for the #2 seed, with a win Friday against current #2 seed Westmoreland. King & Queen Central needs to beat West Point Friday to draw a step closer to at least clinching one home game in the playoffs.

NOTE: In Class 1, Region B, Central-Lunenburg leads by 1.4286 points over Riverheads. Franklin is fourth at 16.0 followed by Sussex Central at 14.0. Cumberland is the odd man out in this nine-team region, but less than a point behind #8 Altavista.

Battlefield 17 Patriot 7

First match-up of 9-0 teams in PWC since 2000. Battlefield shuts out Patriot's offense a week after the Pioneers put up 76 points on John Champe to go 10-0 on the regular season again.

The game started out as more of a defensive game with both teams looking equal, getting to the ball on defense, and trading possessions. Patriot forced two turnovers earlier in the game, including one that resulted in a pick six to go up 7-0. Battlefield answered back at the beginning of the second quarter where a receiver got separation and scored on a long pass downfield. Battlefield kicked a nice field goal at the end of the first half to go up 10-7.

Patriot did get close to punching it in on one drive but were stopped on 4th and short close to the end zone that ended their possession, which was a key stop for the Battlefield defense in the game. On their last scoring drive, Battlefield entered Patriot territory and scored on a run where their QB shed a few tacklers and broke free up the middle for the score.

Graham Gmen's Season and the Video

What's going on up in Bluefield? I read where Graham players were involved with making some video that might cause season ending suspensions? Also, I read were it was a lot of players involved and not just a couple, and that this could derail Graham's season. Any truth to this stuff?

With the injuries and looming suspensions, I heard Graham may be without as many as 8 to 9 starters against Virginia High. A great team again for Graham that has legit state title aspirations and talent, and this would be a sad way to end it if the rumors are true

Floyd's Very Unlikely Loss

So Floyd beats Glenvar and losses to Radford, both in OT. They looked to me like a really good team to me. I was really impressed with their toughness and running game and thought they had a shot to win Region C.

Both Glenvar and Radford beat Alleghany badly and Floyd lost to Alleghany 28-6. Something doesn't compute. Why did Floyd play so badly against Alleghany? That cannot have been the same team that played Radford and Glenvar.

Theories
1 Alleghany got really good, really fast.
2. Injuries from Radford game or practice.
3. Suspensions
4. Rested their best players because they would rather play Appo than Glenvar but then the plan backfired when Glenvar beat Radford.
5. Other

#4 makes the least sense. Does anyone have any insights?

Strasburg defeats Central 22-17

The Rams defeated the Falcons 22-17. The Rams stopped the Falcons first drive on 4th down. Ryan Roller connected with Griffen Carter for the early 7-0 lead. Brayden Decristifario pushed the lead to 13-0 with 55-60 yard touchdown run. The Falcons took to the air with a long touchdown pass to Ben Walter's. The teams traded possessions until Strasburg kicked a fg to take a 16-7 lead. The Falcons punched it in from the 1 right before halftime to make 16-14 at the half.

Central held the Rams on the first drive of the second half. Centrals drive stalled and Retrosi boomed a 48 fg to give the Falcons a 17-16 lead. That fg was a school record for Retrosi. The Rams mounted one more drive facing a 4th and 11 Roller found Coates for a 27 yard td pass to put the Rams up 22-17. Central had one more chance but got stopped on 4th down. With the Rams facing 3rd and 11 Coates took a hand off and ran through Falcon defenders for a 1st down to secure the win. Great football game tonight. For the Rams defense Colby Shaw and Omari Holliday led the charge and set the tone early in the game.

The Rams are the Bull Run District and Shenandoah county Champs. I believe they are the 1 seed in the Region playoffs.

Centreville 35 - Westfield 7

Centreville was dominant in almost every facet of the game and used a suffocating run defense that held Westfield well under 200 yards of total offense to get a 35-7 victory and lock up the Region D #2 seed.

CV took the opening kickoff to their own 42 yard line behind a 30 yard KOR by Collela. After penalties negated two big plays, a 30 yard run by Ragland and a 15 yard Resto to McCoy pass, CV still moved to inside the WF 30 yard line. However, WF's Morin intercepted Resto at the WF 20 yard line to stop the drive. WF's Jenks fumbled on WF's first play from scrimmage and CV's Skule recovered on the WF 28 yard line. This time CV made it work, quickly moving the 28 yards and scoring on a 16 yard Ragland run to go up 7-0 (Patterson XP) with 6:13 left in the first quarter. WF went three and out on their next possession, followed by a CV punt, then another WF punt. On this drive CV started on their own 23 yard line and moved quickly downfield with the big play a 38 yard Ragland run before scoring on a 24 yard Resto to McCoy pass to extend the lead to 14-0 (Patterson XP) with 7:16 to play in the second quarter. WF was unable to move the ball again, punting the ball back to CV at midfield. CV put together a drive similar to their last one, with Resto making the big play (a 26 yard run to inside the WF 30 yard line) then finding McCoy again for a 29 yard passing TD to increase their lead to 21-0 (Patterson XP) with 4:08 to play in the half. WF took the CV KO at their 17 yard line and this time they went the 83 yards to score on a 24 yard Jenks to Baker pass to cut the lead to 21-7 (Mattfeld XP) with 25 seconds left in the half.

WF received the second half KO and went three and out, punting the ball to CV on the CV 48 yard line. CV went the 52 yards and scored again when Resto found McCoy for the third time, this one for a 30 yard passing TD and the CV lead was back to 21 points at 28-7 with 7:10 remaining in the third quarter. WF reached their own 41 yard line on their next possession when Jenks was caught from behind rolling out to pass and fumbled on the hit, with CV's Bello recovering on the CV 49 yard line. CV stuck to the big play script on this drive, getting a long play of 30 yards from Ragland, and soon scored again on a 1 yard Ragland run just seconds after the start of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 35-7 (Patterson XP). The next two WF and one CV possessions ended in punts before CV went into victory formation with 1:45 to play.
