Appomattox vs Clarke

What's the score matter ? A win by one point is a win. If Clarke wins it will be because of one reason, because Appo can't stop the run. if Clarke runs the ball, they win. and Clarke can rack the yards up quick. Not counting any turnover situation by either side.

Channel 10 did well, but there were murders, 2 under 35 yr old men suicides, teen shooting grandpa in chest withe rifle, and drunk driving accidents with 2 deaths. Not just 2 suicides of the stidents mentioned. All that happened in matter of 4 months. Channel 10 missed it on that and didnt drive it home.

Whoever wins it's because they were the better team that day...You can't say why some team will win before they play. Maybe just maybe Clarke. will have to pass to win

For some teams, they run the ball so well there is no need for them to pass until needed. Passing is great football, for the teams that do it well, and for the fans watching, but I have seen way too many teams be pass happy that had no business with that type offense. Just because a coach sees a good pro or college team passing on SportsCenter doesn't mean his high school team has the kids suited for that. Pass blocking is usually a misnomer in high school offenses. Any high school team should run an offense suited to the abilities of their players, one that puts them in a position for the most success.

I dream of the day a passing team plays a running team, and both teams run 60 plays each. One run ball 60 times and one pass 60 times. If passing team were to win big people, would say they ran up score. But if running team won, no one would say they ran up score.

I haven't been on here in years. But I want to say good luck to the eagles. You've got a few grads pulling for you from Nashville.

Me and another coach were just discussing members of VA Preps that we don't see on here any longer and I mentioned you. I remember when Gretna and Clarke played back in the day and you were on here posting then. Hope you're doing well.

I think the reason that you don't see passing in 2 A as much as you do in the bigger division is due to the lack of coaching teaching the passing game. Smaller divisions don't do what Coach Smith does for Appomattox. He sends his QB to 7 on 7s, passing camps, Duke U camps, etc.

Thanks man all good here. Hope you're doing good as well. My brothers were on the teams that lost to Gretna and Appo the following year. I shut down the account the year after the Appo loss, because I started coaching at another school in the area. Figured I couldn't be on here going nuts for Clarke while coaching a few miles down the road.

I have never understood why some teams are reluctant to pass ball unless it's 3rd and long, or they fall behind.
My opinion as a coach is that they are probably not confident enough to do so. An accurate high school Qb is hard to find so most coaches probably do not feel confident in throwing the ball unless they are in a situation that they must throw. Not saying that this is why CC doesn't throw much, just teams in general.

Because I have seen both teams play and Appomattox is more athletic. And Union was overrated, no offense to any Union fans but their defense was suspect all year long, just go back and look at the number of points they gave up to not very good competition. I agree, what anyone thinks has no bearing on the outcome of the game but, that is what a message board is for, right? People to talk about the games?

Union has a very bad DC. Can't argue with that. You would not believe some of the stuff that has been said to him from the stands week in and week out over the past 5 years, but since you're a coach, maybe you would... He has NO idea how to make adjustments. That being said, Gate City was the only team to score more points on Union than they should have, and GC scored points on everybody but Richlands. I mean, Union only gave up 17 points per game and that's counting points against 2nd string. I'm sure most 2A teams would have been happy with that average.

Like I said before, Union's O made mistake after mistake against Clarke, but Clarke was the better team. I don't think that Union was overrated at all. I think Clark was UNDERrated.

Let this soak in for just a minute... Lee High's running back had more yards in just one drive against Appomattox than the entire Lee offense had against Union in the whole game.

Does that mean than Union's defense was better than Appomattox? Doe that mean Appomattox is weak against the run? IDK, but we will find out tomorrow. Will be interesting for sure. I'm not predicting a Clarke win, but with that O line, I won't be surprised...at all.

Well I will say App's coaching staff is very good at making halftime adjustments and letting their playmakers run free...I also think the buffalo gap game was like playing against a very good scout team for Clarke. Differences in offense, yes, but still the same philosophy. Where as playing against the union O probably wasn't as helpful in preparing for Appomattox.
I remember in 09 Appo shut down the single wing for the whole first half, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Clarke struggle to move the ball early on.

Do you think Appomattox's DC would be interested in moving to Wise Co? Just asking... :)

I saw Appomattox play 3 times. The more I watched them, the more impressed I was with their offense. They are very balanced with speed at every position. They have about 6 skill guys that are a threat to score every time they touch the ball.

Just curious hr6, have you seen clarkes offense yet? This year or prior?

I saw it in 2009 I believe it was.
I was just curious your thoughts on their scheme...I thought you might've seen them more recently though. i youtubed clark and I saw a video from 09 I believe. It looks like they had some highlights of passing out of the spread...is that something they still do? Maybe a Clarke person can answer that.

I believe they ran some wing formation.

UTcrazy. Are you going to Lynchburg or Salem tomorrow ? I going to Lynchburg. Not enough passing in Salem for me, though I would like to see Appomattox. Hopefully they can win without me.

Pass blocking, or lack of, is what limits many 2A teams in their attempt at a passing game.
I cant agree with that. If ur OLineman cant hold blocks for 1-3 seconds consistently, well he needs to be on sideline. My dog could hold the UPS truck man off for that long. QBs need at the most 3 seconds and the ball should be out.

I'm still waiting to see a high school team with offensive linemen that can consistently hold a pass block for 3 seconds. The key word being consistently.

I agree on the QB being quick, only way a high school team can be successful passing.

Lol, I doubt it. I know all of the Appomattox staff pretty well and I think it's safe to say that they are all happy at Appo. They are sitting on a gold mine as far as football goes. Only losing 10 seniors from this year's team. Only 7 of them actually get much playing time. And the Jv team was 9-1. IMO, the coaches will probably be there a while.

I'm going with Clarke in a close game....They are big, physical, strong with plenty enough athletes...

I would think so looking at what they have coming back on paper. They will have to replace their Qb since he is a senior which is arguably the most important position on the field
I tell you what bro, Javon Scruggs looking good to take that position. If he continues to go to the QB camps, 7 on 7s, and Carson Newman (split back veer) camps that Coach Smith had taken Matt Page on all these years, Javon gonna be NICE. Scruggs is an intelligent player that knows the game of football. Matt Page has broke school record for passing, Scruggs has chance to shatter it (he is a sophomore). He has a nice arm and he can run if need be just like Page.

How would you know that they are way more athletic than Clarke...I heard all last week how Union was this and was that...It really doesn't matter what anybody thinks the game will be played on the field.
We're you in Salem today? If so, would you agree that I was right? Appomattox is and was way more athletic. That's not a shot at CC, it's just a fact.
