Benedictine scored 19 points in the final five minutes to escape with a 26-10 come-from-behind win over St Christopher's in a game plagued by turnovers.
The Cadets trailed 10-7 late in the 4th quarter and faced a 4th-and-goal from the Saints 17-yard line. Instead of attempting the game-tying field goal, Benedictine head Coach Greg Lilly decided to go for the lead. Quarterback Wes Buleza connected with Freddy Barber in the corner of the endzone for a touchdown and a 13-10 lead.
A bad snap on 4th down gave Benedictine the ball at the 10-yard. Ryker Cook took the handoff and scored from 12-yards out with 3:48 remaining on the clock.
St Christopher quarterback Kahlil Nash, under heavy pressure from Tim Semisch, made an ill-advised throw that was easily intercepted and returned 30 yards for a touchdown by junior cornerback Khamari Veney. Junior Khalil Moore effectively ended the game with an interception in the final minute.
The Saints led 3-0 at halftime and extended the lead to 10-0 on a 1-yard run by Henry Omohundro midway thru the 3rd quarter. St Christopher's wasn't able to take advantage of four turnovers by Benedictine in the 1st quarter and six turnovers before the half. Both teams combined for nine turnovers.
Beluza posted huge passing numbers throwing for 301 yards on 15 of 23 passing and two touchdowns. Riley Rourty caught four passes for 150 yards including a 64-yard touchdown reception that he stutter-stepped twice before reaching the endzone.
The Cadets defensive front was the key in limiting St Christopher's to only 120 yards total offense. University of North Carolina commit Joel Starlings was credited with 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss while T.J Baldwin and Jacob Moore combined for 12 tackles and three tackles for loss.
