Sorry I could not get to you guys last night, but the website was "down for maintenance" by the time I was able to check in. But there is not too much to say about this one anyway.
It was simply a case of too much Dalton Jefferson. Not only is he 6'6" but he is athletic to boot as opposed to just being a tall body to put on the floor. And then when he steps out to hit the three, as he did two or three times, it is almost like he is several weapons in one. So although the much smaller, scrappier Gladiators tried their best, they had no answer for him and this one was a mismatch from the get go.
Riverheads got a solid effort out of Braeson Fulton, who scored 20 on the night, but his backcourt-mate Grant Painter was hit with a pair of early fouls, which pretty much took him out of the game. The Gladiators did manage to hang with the Eagles for awhile, trailing only 16-14 on a Forrest Shuey bucket, but ER opened it up to 20-14 by the end of the first quarter and then scored the first seven points of the second to break it open and that just about sealed the deal.
On the bright side, the very much improved Riverheads JVs almost pulled one out as they gave the Eagles everything they had before falling 42-39. RHS took an early advantage and held it for almost three full quarters as East Rock did not see the lead until the final minute of the third quarter. Riverheads then moved back in front and still looked like they might pull off the upset until a final ER flurry gave them the win. The final margin was ER's largest lead of the night and even then, Riverheads had two final open looks at a three that might have sent the game into overtime.
Next week, if we can get the games in since the "s" word is being talked about, things should look up for the Gladiators as they host Buffalo Gap on Tuesday and Rockbridge County on Wednesday, before traveling to Stonewall on Friday. Although this might be cart-before-horse, on paper that would appear to give the Big Red a shot at a pair of wins, whereas Rockbridge will be an unknown quantity as we have not played them in a number of years.
