Wise Central 83, Abingdon 68
All five starters scored in double figures for Wise County Central and the Warriors opened the game by sprinting out to a 36-9 lead.
However, there was still some late-game drama.
Wise Central led 57-27 with 2:32 left in the third quarter, but that advantage was cut to 67-59 with 2:50 remaining in the game.
The Warriors (10-6) managed to hold off Abingdon’s charge.
“You couldn’t ask for a better three quarters,” said Central coach T.J. McAmis. “I really like our team. We’re playing really hard and we’ve got some pieces. We’ve just got to continue to get better.”
Isaiah McAmis (28 points), Dalton Mullins (20 points), Tyler Vanover (12 points), Bryson Collins (11 points) and Ben Stallard (10 points) led Central. Vanover had 11 points in the first quarter alone.
Thomas Francisco paced Abingdon (7-7) with 18 points, while Trent Cox added 16 points.
“If you can ever get a positive after a loss, that’s the way to do it,” said AHS coach Casey Johnson. “The kids played their hearts out and you can’t ask for anything more. We’ve put two great fourth-quarters together in a row [including in a 76-67 loss to John Battle on Friday], but we’ve got to do a better job in the first three.”
