Dinwiddie vs. Smithfield
Revised: Game has been moved up to August 31, 2017 7:00 pm @ Dinwiddie

Coaches:

Dinwiddie: Billy Mills, 102-34 in 11 years at Dinwiddie (2006-2017).

Smithfield: Reginald Chavis, 14-8 in 3 years at Smithfield (2015-2017).

Teams:

Dinwiddie: 1-0 after defeating Denbigh 70-0.

Coach Billy Mills a former Emory and Henry linebacker is in his 12th season as the leader of the Generals. Coach Mills took over an under achieving Dinwiddie program in 2006 and has had 9 consecutive winning seasons. He has 11 seniors returning from a team that advanced to the 4a state final in 2016.

Key players: Zyan Sturdivant - RB, K’ymon Pope – QB, K’ Vaughan Pope WR/MLB, and Joseph Tyree RB/OLB and Josiah Williams WR/DB

Offense: K’ymon Pope making his first varsity start at qb was 5-7 for 80 yards with 2 td’s last week and Zyan Sturdivant had 80 total yards yards and 3 td’s in one half of play. K’Vaughan Pope was also on the receiving end of a touchdown pass from his brother.

Defense: Dinwiddie held Denbigh to 15 total yards in the first half of play and 44 for the entire game. Denbigh did very little against the first team defense and I was very pleased with our run defense. K’Vaughan Pope, Joseph Tyree, and Omar Tyson pressured the Denbigh quarterback and accrued several tackles for loss. Josiah Williams and K’Vaughan Pope each recorded an interception with Pope taking his back for a touchdown.

Special Teams: Todd Anspach was perfect on nine PAT’s last week setting Metro Richmond record for PAT’s in a game. Josiah Williams ran the opening kickoff back for a 85 yard touchdown and Shawn Tyson blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the end zone for a td.

Smithfield: 0-0, Finished 8-3 last season (lost to Grafton in first round of playoffs), 22-20 since realignment in 2013 with 2 playoff appearances (0-2). Points for 388, Points against 182 in 2016.

Coach Chavis a former Averett College standout starts his 3rd year at the helm of the Packers. Coach Chavis previously served as an assistant coach at Norfolk State and Booker T Washington High School. He has 20 seniors returning from the 2016 team that made the playoffs for the second consecutive season and the Packers are determined to give Coach Chavis his first playoff victory.

Key players: Willie Drew – QB/DB, Caleb Brodie – WR/DB, Jameek Jordan – DE, Nymel Green OLB/TE

Offensively the Packers will be led by senior quarterback, Willie Drew. Drew is a dual threat quarterback who threw for 1,608 yards (18 td’s) and rushed for 1008 yards (13 td’s) Caleb Brodie takes over the running back duties and has speed to beat defenders to the corner. Nymel Greena, tight end is a huge target for Drew and is extremely hard to bring down. Surry transfer Darius Savage adds needed speed on the outside as a receiver. According to Coach Chavis (Daily Press) Savage was very impressive in the preseason. The Packers run a variation of the spread. They will utilize quarterback keepers, jet sweeps and a quick hitting passes game to work down the field. This unit is considered to be very fast and will attempt to utilize the deep ball to keep teams honest.

The defense will be anchored by defensive end, Jameel Jordan, Nymel Green (lb) and Bishop Sullivan Transfer Eric Harris (lb). The defensive backfield should be strong with Brodie, Savage and Drew defending passes. An article written for by the Daily Press revealed this unit played exceptionally well during its scrimmages against Oscar Smith and Norview with Harris taking a fumble to the house for a touchdown.

The Skinny:

These two teams have never played and based on the current weather situation the field could be a bit damp. Both teams play on natural grass, so they should be accustomed to poor conditions. Dinwiddie rarely loses at home and with one game under their belt they should have worked the kinks out. Smithfield’s offense is eerily similar to the Generals, so both defenses should pick up their reads easily. Offensively, Dinwiddie will look to establish and maintain a sound running game. The offensive line was not really tested by Denbigh, so this unit will need to need to work hard to contain the Packers talented linebackers. Speaking of containment, the General defense will need to pressure Drew and keep him in the pocket. If the athletic Drew is able to break containment he will eat up yards in a hurry. I tend to believe the Packers will have difficulty establishing a consistent running game; however, this could be a double edge sword as Smithfield’s athletic receivers could test the inexperienced Dinwiddie defensive backs.

Many people believe Dinwiddie will win this one going away, but I think the Packers come to play and keep it close for most of the game. Smithfield has the talent to hang with the Generals and could very easily pull an upset. If the field is as damp as expected the running game should be the key and Dinwiddie has the advantage in this area. Dinwiddie 31-14. Good luck to both teams.
