Galax led Radford almost wire to wire leading 10-5 after 1, 22-15 at half, 31-23 after 3 and continued to methodically pull away protecting ball and knocking down free throws to ice it late 50-37.

Honaker led 18-10 after 1, 33-18 at half, blew things open in 2nd half even more for a decisive 75-49 final.

Congrats to both schools on advancing to next weeks final four in Richmond. And best of luck in tomorrow's final.

I am admitting that I slept on Honaker. I'm having only a side dish of crow right now but I didn't think they would beat GW so who knows. I don't see anyone beating AltaVista, they are clicking. However, they aren't very deep so if you can get them in foul trouble you might have a chance. The combination of great guard play and their bigs at the 1A level are tough to handle.

AltaVista has 2 or 3 guys off the bench who can play well enough to fill a role, if a starter gets in foul trouble.

I wasn't surprised at all that GW lost. George Wythe's schedule was probably one of the least competitive of any other team's. George Wythe was a better team at the first of the season than they finished. The only good team GW played was Galax. It is hard to improve if your weaknesses are never exposed until its "Win or go home" time. I certainly hope GW's schedule is more competitive in the future.

I am still betting on Honaker. They are big, strong and know how to play. I do think Altavista has a very good coach who adapts as well as any coach I have seen.

I agree with maroons67. A weak Bull Run district didn't help George Mason either, they steamrolled everyone in the league and then had to play Brunswick, a team that could handle pressure and apply their own. Mason didn't play a great game and lost. Weak leagues hurt good teams in the playoffs.

Best team in a weak district/conference = Tallest Midget

I've used that term for years in regards to the old Southwest District...some of you noobs probably never heard of it...

Although I agree to some extent - most of the leagues in 1A are pretty weak. One could argue, the best league top to bottom was the northern neck but look how they fared. Altavista does a good job scheduling tougher opponents but their league is weak. Surry also plays in a tough league that includes multiple strong 2A teams. Galax plays in a weak league as does radford. I guess I'm playing both sides of the fence - maybe I should run for office.

Galax had 2 games with graham(district) in final week of season. Also played Glenvar twice, Pulaski twice, Bburg, cburg, a 20 win allegeny(N.C.)team
Twice.

That's pretty good variety of competitive teams that all play different ways. Probably really helped Galax be more prepared come post season versus a GW team who only played Galax 3 times and not really sure who the next best team they played is...
