Giles/Glenvar Update, Anyone?

60 minute, Look, Im pretty sure a train horn that sounds like 10 at once is justified as being unfair. Man made audio sound coming from bleachers is one thing (all your mentioned items), but blowing a horn that is deafening is poor sportsmanship.
They dont even do that in college or NFL????!
BTW, Giles landed on the opposite side of poor reffed games in the past and now all I hear is yall whining? Need I remind you of Appomattox vs. Giles 2 years ago in playoffs? Them refs got in trouble for reffing that game so poorly according to some of the sources I know.
I was on vacation that week and did not see it, but this is the first I've heard about it. How often do you see hear people complaining about refs after losing close games? answer: every day, everywhere.

Where do you draw the line? Cow bells? Jug of rocks? I think making as much noise as you possibly can while the offense is getting set is pretty much common practice by all fans, for all teams, at all levels.

I don't know where the line is either minute man but I do know it crosses the line when a very loud mechanical device is used as a weapon to try and disrupt the other teams offensive play calling which was very evident last Saturday. It is not within the sportsmanship and fair play rule of the VHSL to use it in that way. The Glenvar qb had to wait for it to stop 5-8 seconds before almost every offensive play in the last 8 min of the fourth quarter.... VHSL has a rule against big loud noise making mechanical/artificial devices but they don't enforce it against Giles..maybe because it's a tradition. OK I get that..But... What if other schools started using similar loud devices in the same manner against other teams? They would all be banned for sure. If Giles were very careful not to disrupt the other teams offensive play calling, I wouldn't have a problem with it..actually think it's kinda cool if used in the right context.

The guy with the horn is a former player and father of a former player as well. He's a huge Giles supporter and a really good guy. If he gets a little carried away at crucial moments, I guess it's his way of trying to he[p his team. BTW----Christiansburg had their own train horn when we played them there earlier this year, and they were not bashful about blowing it either. And a couple years ago when we played Riverheads in the play-offs, a couple of their fans came over to our side to look at the set-up and said they were interested in getting one. My personal opinion, anything fans do or use from the stands for noise is fair game. I would draw a line if someone was using noise played out of the PA system during live play.

I so agree with this post. Its poor sportsmanship and it speaks volumes about Giles fans, coaches, and administration to turn a blind eye to it. #ByAnyMeansNecessary

Where are they getting the power from? Like I said previously, Appomattox has a horn but they only ise it after a score. They have a power cord running to concessions to run the air compressor? So are u saying this "nice guy" has a portable generater and air compressor in his pocket that he pulls out in the stands? I THINK NOT! School is providing an electric souece to run it. "Helping his team"? Like i stated before, college and the NFL dont even allow that stuff to happen in games so why High school?

"When Giles loses, it usually is the refs fault!" --Overheard from an ADULT fan Monday morning...

I'll leave that there.

Then chalk one up for the Refs. Refs 1 Giles 0. There can't be any other reasons. It's Giles after all.[/QUOTE]
When Giles lost to Glenvar in the playoffs last year I didn't hear the first person say that the refs had anything to do with it. We simply got whipped. We lost to Battle three years ago in the playoffs and no one said the refs had anything to do with it. We got whipped again.

I would say when the other team breaks the huddle the horn needs to be turned off. That is where it crosses the line of fair play when it interferes with the play calling. Fans yelling to the top of their lungs or shaking rocks in a jug are fine anytime. Other than that I don't have a problem with it. Actually think it is cool when the team runs out on the field with it sounding.

Many high school teams dont do "huddles" anymore. I say when QB steps behind Center, horn needs to stop.

It's something we've done for years....I don't think it's loud enough to effect cadence...but was asked not to do it in 3rd or 4th at Glenvar so it was stopped...I think it's adds some excitement to the game...powered by generator n air...the horn is just something we do and I believe it adds to the game....but everyone has their opinion...

GS89er..It's definitely loud enough to adversely affect cadence.... That is why the Glenvar QB waited it out on every play. Maybe since the sound is going away from your side, you don't realize how loud it really is. Your guy was still blowing the horn very late into the fourth quarter up to and including the missed 2 point conversion. Did the officials ask or someone else?

Not sure who asked...but it was blown very sparingly in the fourth...would you rather have it so everyone can hear the qb...it does add flair and spice to the game...just my opinion...I'm sure complaining will have it done away with soon...been doing it probably 20 years....but things change...I do think most teams like what it does for the atmosphere of the game...

I agree with you. I like the horn even though it's on the opposition sidelines. Guess I'm a little jealous. Just be careful when the opposing teams offense is on the field and I don't think people think it crosses the line.

How are you able to use it at other schools though? How are you getting the electricity?

Gate City uses a train horn as well. It's mounted to a truck.
I dont want anyone to lose focus in what Im saying. I dont think its right to blow it when QB is calling cadence. I could care less about them blowing it in between plays or after a score. Appomattox purchased one last year and used it only after a score.

I wonder where everyone is getting the idea of a train horn? I say come up with your own idea.

I love the train horn, cow bells, jugs with rocks in them, etc.

Don't know Trevor, don't care. I have never seen it other places I have been until last year. We played Appomattox two years ago in playoffs at home. I go there last year and guess who now has one. We play cburg every year and we go there this year and they now have one. Glenver loves it so much I figure they might have one next year also, although I doubt it blows much.

Winger....If it were up to me to decide, I would wait for Giles to blow that train horn loud and long and then from our side would come the sound of a very loud train crash with particular empahsis on the train derailment. I would do that everytime your train horn blew. lol

This shows you don't know the rules in High School at all

If the defensive player crosses the line the play is dead and offsides is called period....dead ball penalty on the defense the second he crosses the line....this isn't college or the NFL....read the rule book

Have to do this because of that rude comment, but if you actually read the rule book yourself, you would know offsides does not exist in high school. What you're describing is encroachment. They are not the same thing.

Since it doesn't exist...wouldn't you say it's pretty much the same thing...defensive player comes across the line of scrimmage and makes contact before the ball is snapped. ..uh...been watching football a loooonnng time...call it what you want...at any level it's a five yard penalty...granted it could've been said nicer....but to go back weeks n stir the pot is a bit rude as well...just saying

Since one doesn't exist and the other does, then no by definition they are not the same thing. I read the reply from pajtolympian from 10 days ago and corrected someone on the actual rules that made a rude comment. At any level encroachment is a 5 yard penalty correct, but at every level offsides is not the same thing as encroachment. I encourage you to research the difference. If you call 10 days "weeks" that's up to you. Not stirring any pots, the main goal was to inform of the correct rule.

It's the same thing...so a defensive player comes across the line and touches a player on the offensive line...it's called what...just because it's called by a different name doesn't mean it's not the same thing...and the penalty is the same...doesn't exist in high school. ..does in college and pro....just like different face mask penalties and one foot rules...those are totally different...if there is no offsides the encroachment pretty much takes its place now don't it....

Like I said before, I encourage you to actually research why they are different.

In high school there is no neutral zone infraction...you cross the line with or without contact it is an automatic encroachment penalty...in college or pro without contact the player has a chance to get back to his side of the line...if ball is snapped while in the neutral zone it's a penalty...if contact it's a penalty...your point is pointless...in high school once you cross the line there is no getting back...

Now you are confusing offsides and neutral zone infraction which are also different penalties. Encroachment, offsides, and neutral zone infraction have completely different definitions and are different penalties in regards to live ball and dead ball fouls. If you refuse to research them yourself, this conversation is futile. Have a good day.

I'm not confusing anything...what part of in high school there is no such thing did you not get....it's simple....guy went across the line of scrimmage and actually touched guy on other side...nothing was called...in college or pro that would be offsides...in high school it's encroachment....but really it's the same thing..if I'm wrong enlighten us all with the difference...I guess they could call unabated to the quarterback but I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist in high school either...

If he makes contact in college or pros its encroachment, being across the line at snap is offsides. I don't know who said what so who's "side" that would be
