At the Region D tournament, held Wednesday at Ivy Hill Golf Club in Forest, Blacksburg edged out Jefferson Forest 305-306 to claim the team title. The Bruins looked to have finished a comfortable five strokes ahead of the Cavaliers, until a Blacksburg player who shot 76 was disqualified for signing an incomplete scorecard. Blacksburg then had to count their next-lowest score of 80, which bumped their team total from 301 to 305 - still just enough to edge JF by one stroke.
Garnet Manley III of JF cruised to medalist honors with a 65. Salem’s Hunter King (77) qualified for the state tourney (Oct. 14 in Williamsburg) as an individual, and Spartan freshman Macy Johnson also posted a 77 to qualify for the girls’ state tournament.
