Is Mac McClung

That's a can of worms, Rowsey, Reddick, the list will grow long. Not sure there many with the acrobatic ability.

Read some articles about Ewing saying McClung will be point guard pretty quick for the Hoyas. Watching VT lastnight how do you pass up this kid? VT couldn’t make a shot if goal was a bathtub.

J.J. Redick

5 star recruit
MVP of McDonald's All-American game

Duke's all time leader scorer with #4 retired
2x First team All-ACC
2x ACC POTY
2x First team All-American
2x National POTY

#11 pick in NBA draft
I’ve heard from some reliable sources that Mac is better than JJ. Has more upside. Only seen Mac play a small bit this summer but from what I’ve seen, I’d like to see a PG in the class of 2018 better than him.

He may be? I didn't see JJ in high school. I watched him play a few times his junior and senior years at Duke so that's hard to compare to what Mac is now.

JJ was more "accomplished" in high school as a McDonald's All-American and a 5 star recruit with high D1 offers. It would be tough for Mac (or anyone in this age) to be as accomplished as JJ was in college too.

It's hard to say who is better or who is the best because the comparing will all be subjective. It's a fun discussion to have but talent wise there is no touching Iverson. So let's argue for second best lol

Kick your heels 3 times and come on back to Kansas, DSH!! Better than JJ? Best PG in the class of 18? McClung is a fine player, but ESPN has him as a 3 star player and the 41st best PG in the class.

JJ wasn't a point guard, more a shooting guard. At 6'4" and even in hs he was as close to automatic with the 3 ball as anyone I've seen. Talk to some of the old Danville faithful DSH and ask about the 40 or so he put on GW in the playoffs at GW to beat the Eagles. As far as pgs, the argument starts and pretty much ends with A. I. And we ain't talking about "practice"

I remember that game vividly. JJ vs Antonio Fitzgerald. Kid was just a pure shooter. Anytime JJ went over half court he was a threat to score. But yeah AI was good but I’ll still give it to Frank Mason.

Rowsey is closer to what Mcclung is. Rowsey is one of the best scorers in Va history. Also had great court awareness. Mcclung is not even close to Iverson or Mason. Don't get me wrong he's great a player but he has a quite a bit of work to do to be an Iverson.

Mac McClung is a good player but nowhere near the player of a Frank Mason. There's no need to even bring Iverson into this conversation. I'll give you 2 other PGs that I've see in the past 6 years that I would take over him. Anthony Barber from Hampton High. Ummm Travis Fields from IC Norcom. I'm sure that everyone has heard of him. Heck, I remember Jay Dandridge being the best PG on the court when Martinsville played against GC. No disrespect intended, these are just my humble opinions. I do wish Mac well at Georgetown. I hope he has a great career there.

Mac is a great player.....but ill probably hold off to see how he does in college before i make any big claims. Iverson is a legend and Frank Mason is a beast.....but it's hard to compare him to players that have already passed through high school. The only thing im confident in saying is theres not 1 single PG with his leaping ability in the state right now. (47" vertical) Id also wager that theres not 1 player in the state that can stop him....the only way hes not getting buckets is if hes having an off night and he stops himself. His defense needs polishing no doubt....but has the ability and has huge upside.

And this is no disrespect to you Ant.....Martinsville was the much better team and gave GC a whipping in Richmond.... and Dandridge was a really good PG. But the kid wasnt even in the same area code as McClung....he wasnt then and he definitely isnt now that Mac is senior. Mac has taken his talent to a completely different level since his sophomore season....comparing the two would be completely unfair to Jay. This is my opinion as well....but i think Georgetown and the 30+ offers back this up.

JJ and Mac shouldn't be compared. JJ was a SHOOTER...one of the best ever. Just watch his high school highlight and Duke highlights. Obviously he had his flaws, but we contributed greatly in his own way.

Mac, on the other hand, is extremely different. Sure...he can shoot. Pretty deep at that. But let's be honest...not as good as JJ. That being said, did you ever see JJ dunking on every school he played against and making those dimes like McClung does? I don't think so. I've been watching McClung's highlights since I was in 8th grade (his sophomore year) and I've been glued ever since. Still...Mac is a PG who hasn't played in College yet. JJ was a shooting guard who shot. JJ never scored whatever...63(?) in a game...but he had his share of 40 point nights. They're very very different players.

By the end of Mac's senior year, it would be a hard decision on who you would pick, Mac or JJ at the end of his high school career. It just would. That being said, JJ is nearing the end of his NBA career and McClung hasn't even finished his senior year in high school.

I find it extremely unlikely that McClung will pass Iverson. Trust me...I'm a huge fan. I think we are jumping to conclusions a little to early though...first let's see if Mac can lead his team to a state championship like JJ did.

At this point...it's still up in the air if McClung will even make the NBA. That wasn't true for Iverson or Redick really.

I’d imagine Mac is probably around a 40 inch vertical but no way is he a 47 inch vertical!
I enjoy MacClung's highlights, but I agree he has 40 at best. Lee had a player during the streak years named Hosea Berkley. 6'1, 200 pounds who was also a football recruit. I remember seeing his Blacksburg combine info when he was a sophomore I think. 40 inch vertical. If anyone saw him dunk at Lee would agree. He was way above the rim, especially with a running start on fastbreaks. He was up there higher then any of Mac's I've seen on highlight videos. The dunk he had over Brad Starks in the regional final was just 'wow'. He had his arm and ball at the top of the box.

We all gotta give Mac some credit.. He’s a kid from far SWVA that’s giving them something to be very proud of, he’s got French Montana and other celebs on his Instagram praising him, he’s selling out arenas, he’s dropping 40 like it’s nothing, he’s doing in game dunks that NBA dudes attempt in the slam dunk contests, kid doesn’t back down from anybody, and he’s going to be the best thing Georgetown has gotten in a while. Kid is doing pretty darn good. I’m on his bandwagon!

Speaking of vertical leaps, how many of you SWVA old-timers remember this guy:

85 straight. I used to post by armchairquarterback way back Hosea Berkley was the real deal leaping. He was 6'1" and could grab the rim sock footed standing directly underneath of it. Against Orange County in the playoffs, he had a break away. His head was about 2-3 inches over the rim at eye level. The dunk was monster. His elbow was over the rim easy. The crowd basically was overwhelmed. He was more of a rebounder and defense specialist. Played football in college. The great thing about that team was every guy could dunk and was super athletic. Jones, Berkley, Lightfoot, both crawfords. They were all between 6'1" and 6'5" and super quick.

Speaking of vertical leaps, how many of you SWVA old-timers remember this guy:

When it comes to highlight reel dunks, nobody has ever touched Talford. Especially west of Lynchburg. Won 4 events at the state track meet and set 4 records. Won the Southern conf title in the high jump with a 7'1" leap and played baseball in the Phillies org in the summers. Oh yeah he led ETSU to the sweet sixteen. I think McClung is special but Talford was next level.

Talford was a beast and many don't remember but a hellar baseball player too.

I saw him many time down at ETSU, my alma mater, and even in Tucson in a 2nd round NIT preseason game in 1990 where they gave the UofA fits.
That is a great highlight video of his dunks. I did a search on him and saw where he jumped 7' in the high jump in high school. That's the most impressive thing to me. Seven freaking feet. Wow!

Darius Hargrove(Brunswick) was 1 hell of player as well.... Just like JJ Reddick, HARGROVE was more polished as well

He developed a good outside game by the time he graduated on a team full of great outside shooters.

His skywalking around the rim is still legendary and that leads to my mentioning the point guard on that team.

Keith "Mister" Jennings from Culpepper County HS. Graduated in '87. At 5' 7" he could ball and handle the rock. He played for the Golden State Warriors for 4 years and had a long successful career in Europe.

He's the assistant basketball coach at Lees-McRae now.

I definitely remember Jennings. Lee took Culpeper down in the 1986
regional final pretty easy, but they met again the following season and it was a nail bitter. Lee won with Todd Dunnings scoring 40. Jennings had 27. Both were named first team All-state.

I could be wrong but wasn't Jennings on that same ETSU team with Talford that went to the sweet sixteen.

They were on the same team for 3 years. Jennings graduated a year before Talford.

ETSU never reached the Sweet 16 during that time. ETSU knocked of the UofA in the 1st round but lost in the next round to the Fab 5 of Michigan in '92.

We had moved to Tucson in 1990 and that victory was SWEET, especially after the close loss at McHale Center in '90. :D
