The Mecklenburg County High School varsity football schedule for the debut season was recently released and it features a number of familiar foes. The Phoenix have a favorable schedule, playing seven regular season games at home with only three road contests.

Because Mecklenburg is entering into the Piedmont District in the middle of a VHSL cycle, most teams already had their schedules set so this year will be somewhat of a mishmash of opponents until the local team can settle into a regular district schedule beginning in the 2023 campaign.

Mecklenburg is scheduled to play scrimmages on August 12 at home against Dan River HS and on August 19 at Chatham HS.

The Phoenix, a Class 4 VHSL program, will play the first regular season game in school history at Brunswick HS (Class 2) on August 26 and play its regular season home opener against Central of Lunenburg HS (Class 1) on September 2.

Mecklenburg will play at home on September 9 against Lee HS (Class 2) and on September 15 against Halifax County (Class 4).

The Phoenix will travel to Weddington HS (NC) outside of Charlotte, NC on September 23 and play host to Amherst County (Class 4) on September 30.

October 7 will be a bye week for Mecklenburg before the Phoenix play at Sussex-Central HS (Class 1) on October 14 before welcoming Madison County (Class 2) on October 21 for homecoming.

The Phoenix will play host to John Marshall HS (Class 2) on October 28 and celebrate Senior Night in the regular season finale at home against Nottoway HS (Class 2) on November 4.

The regional playoffs will begin the following week.

Watkins and Mitchell Named as Coaches

It was recently announced that Danny Watkins was named the boys’ basketball head coach at Mecklenburg County HS while Dakota Mitchell was named the head wrestling coach.

Congratulations to both who will be great additions to the Mecklenburg County coaching staff.

Tough to put together a schedule in the middle of everybody else's two-year cycle. But they should be anywhere from 6-4 to 8-2 against that schedule.

With how weak that is they're going to end up as like a 6/7/8 seed and just get absolutely rolled in the first round lol.

Just getting a 10 game schedule in the middle of a cycle, is a pretty good deal. All I can say is, they have to start somewhere. If they make the playoffs, it will be a huge adjustment in level of competition.

Next year's schedule in the Piedmont won't be much tougher than this, except for GWD. (Bassett and Magna Vista will probably be decent games for MC) On the one hand, I think it's good MC is going to the Piedmont, but on the other hand, it doesn't help GW at all. (Football)

Mecklenburg will take Patrick County spot in the district as this is PC's final year in the Piedmont.

Martinsville needs to get out of the Piedmont also. PC is larger than M'ville and if they go to the Three Rivers, which is where they are rumored to be heading, the Dogs should try and go to the Dogwood.

I agree to a certain extent about Martinsville. The Dogs are competitive in all sports except baseball and softball. The Dogwood would be a good move. Patrick County should’ve been in the 3 Rivers a long time ago. They won’t be very competitive in anything but baseball and girls basketball every once in a blue moon.

Martinsville is losing kids every year. With all this talk of reversion we've already lost some athletes to Magna Vista and Bassett. The Beamer kid is going to Carlilse next year. We are down to 520 students and getting smaller by the day.

I had a coach from Martinsville say to me that 2024-25 will be their last year as a high school. My nephew will get to graduate from Martinsville but my niece (his sister) will go there and midway go to either Magna Vista or Bassett (I'm thinking MV based on where they live).

It is sad but nobody up here knows what's going to happen.next. If a coach told you 24-25 would be the last year, he is misinformed. The reversion of the city is being held up by legal teams and also it is now going to have to be voted on by city residents whether to proceed or not. It will not pass so the school system will not cease to exist unless the city and county can come to an agreement for the county to take over the city school system. The biggest problem now is kids transferring from Martinsville to other local schools because they are uncertain of the outcome. It is nothing but a big cluster f@#* up here now and the kids will pay the price for adult problems.

Can't do it. There are laws against annexation of land by a city the size of Martinsville. Martinsville has been landlocked for many years, most of the furniture and textile business left the city killing the tax base and population has dropped below 13 thousand with a big percentage of that being either low income or retirees. Not a good recipe to survive. Martinsville is in Henry Co.

Martinsville city is a shell of what it used to be but still better to live in than Danville. Property is a lot cheaper, a lot cleaner, less crime and the people are a lot better. Danville has some great people but the transplants have shook things up. Danville also has more going for itself with the casino (I didn’t vote for it but respect the people who did) and they’re in the process of bringing industry in. Halifax County/SoBo is years and years behind Danville and Martinsville.

No one knows what the final outcome will be. So any coach that is out in the public speculating about the school closing, and more specifically which year it will happen, is only hurting himself and his coaching peers.

It probably doesn't help that you have rival coaches out there pushing this narrative as a recruiting tool.

I’ve never seen such a weenie dog but very tough schedule before. 7-3 at best, but good enough for playoffs. Weddington will net Class 5 points and Lee County will bring in Class 4, maybe Class 5 points. Both teams will win at least 7-8 games and be one of the top teams in the state.

Dan River/Mecklenburg County scrimmage set for August 12 has been moved to August 11 at Dan River instead of MCHS. Their field is not ready and they will have both Varsity & JV scrimmage the same day in Ringgold.
