Hope everyone is well! Wanted to get some insight on the new high school being built in Buchanan County. Twin Valley, Hurley and Grundy High Schools will consolidate. I’m hearing that some kids will have to go over two mountains, deal with bad roads and some even have about an hour 40 minutes round trip commute. Wow!!! Love to hear you all’s’ thoughts on this.

Lots of kids in rural VA already have bus rides this long or longer. That area has lots of mountains so no surprise they’d be traveling over some to get to the school in Grundy.

Never been to SW VA before?
Lots of kids have traveled over 2 mtns to schools for decades.
Everyone's dealt with bad roads for decades.
"an hour 40 minutes round trip commute"? ROTFLMFAO! That's ONE WAY!
Well, 1:40 total if they drive, 3 hours if they take the bus.
Was told that confirmation will occur during the Summer... Grundy's already got a lot of SWD teams on their schedule for this year. Dropped Richlands as the benefit game to play them 'regular'.
I think we'll have less than 600 when the doors open; the enrollment numbers at the end of Feb. for grades 7-10 at the three schools is 633.

I’m not hip and wanted to ask people in the know. I find it commendable and I respect the hell out of the people of SWVA.

Any talk over what will happen to the remaining Black Diamond District schools? Or will that district just disintegrate?

Yep. Haysi & Ervinton have been gone for like 10 years now, and Honaker went back to the Hogo 2 years ago after a 35-year break.

I think Grundy was a long time and one of the original Southwest District members before dropping in classification. Makes sense the new school goes to the SWD. There's no mention of Council High in that consolidation. Would be interesting to know why.
