Made a change at the top this week. I'll do a final top 10 once the season is complete

1. Essex
2. Honaker
3. Sussex
4. Rye Cove
5. George Wythe
6. Grayson Co
7. Altavista
8. Galax
9. Narrows
10. Brunswick

As a long time Essex fan, it's to hard to admit, but Sussex was my preseason pick as well. Essex has played better than I expected however. I see a rematch between those 2 teams. Should be a good one if it happens.

Alright now, y'all might be getting a little carried away about Sussex Central....

Are they good? Yes. Are they physical and talented? Yes. Great Defense? Yes. Should they be in the Top 5? Sure.

Essex is #1 - that is always an easy one (and without the Riverheads Big Red Machine in their way, should have been obvious a few years ago).

However, as for 2nd in the East, I say that Sussex and Northumberland are a toss up.

Most likely, Sussex would win if they played at home and Northumberland would probably win at NHS.

If I must, I'll break it down later....

Go back to my post early during the season after Essex game for Sussex , I clearly stated that team was not the team you will see later on , Sussex was missing 5 starters and 1 starter got injured during the game. I also mentioned Essex has Sussex number and they are Alpha in this division no one else deserves that until they prove it on the field. Northumberland if for real will get a shot before anyone to prove that. Hopefully if Sussex survives they can shake the Essex mojo. Lol

No offense uvacavs, but I disagree with you. It's not easy or obvious. I do think Essex should be number 1 this year and have had them first ahead of Honaker and the rest all year, including number one over Sussex right now, but on Riverheads not being in their way.....see the post I made in another thread about what Calpreps predicted for Essex if Riverheads would have not played Class 1 football since 2015.

Even right now....today....Calpreps predicts Honaker 35, Essex 34.
It has Essex narrowly over George Wythe 31-28 and narrowly over Grayson County 26-21 and winning by 4 points over Sussex.

Calpreps Rankings as of Today
1. Honaker
2. Essex
3. George Wythe and Sussex both tied at 3-4. Has Sussex over GW by 1 point, but has GW closer to Essex.
5. Grayson County
6. Narrows

Excuse us for not drinking the Northumberland Kool-Aid again. Didn't they have a 5-star prospect playing on the 1A level but failed to win a Regional Championship? Heck even the year Essex didn't have football because of Covid, they still didn't capitalize. But they do have an electric offense so maybe they will fare better against Essex should they meet again the the Regional Finals

@uvacavs1 please elaborate how Sussex and Northumberland are pretty much equal.
Northumberland and Sussex are both 3-1 v the same opponents.

NHS lost to Essex by 19 points and Sussex lost to Essex by 18 points.

Both teams blew out CB and Surry by nearly identical scores.

Both teams defeated Lancaster who has a winning record. Sussex did defeat LHS by a larger margin but they played each other very early in the season. Lancaster definitely improved as the season progressed. Well done to the Red Devils on their turnaround.

Besides their victory over Lancaster, Sussex has one big victory, a two point win v Brunswick. None of their other opponents whom they defeated finished with a winning record.

Sussex definitely has the better D compared to Northumberland.

Northumberland lost at the end of an away game at 2A Bruton (5 wins) by just two points. I believe that NHS had 3 TDs called back in that game. NHS has, hopefully, fixed those penalty mistakes. If not, then I would give the advantage to Sussex with their hard hitting Defense.

I'd like to see them play each other but, alas, the NND and Essex stand in the way but you never know.

That is what comes to me at the moment. I hope that the Indians don't blow it Friday night but if they do, I will certainly admit that I was way off.

Much respect to uvacavs as always, but in the East alone, I'd put them behind Essex, Sussex, Altavista and Brunswick and I've seen all 5 teams play. They have a good offense, but they've given up over 40 points in 3 different games this year, including to 3 win Prince Edward and a very average at best Bruton team, who actually beat the Indians. Their numbers are inflated by beating up on weak teams like Surry, winless Middlesex and Charles City, and 2 win Colonial Beach and Westmoreland

@uvacavs1 thanks for taking a moment to point out what you are seeing. I am curious how these playoffs go with several teams in each region seeming to look the part of representing in the semis. The fun begins shortly at Grayson……

Northumberland is not ready to be in the conversation as of yet respectfully. It’s playoff time so we will see. Sussex would beat Northumberland by 3 scores.

Sussex might be that much better than Northumberland but I doubt it.

I'm glad that you are confident in their abilities. There is a reason that people are called fans. I love it. Great enthusiasm!

However, some us on here tried to tell you kindly with complete detailed analysis starting literally 7 years ago that Sussex (or any team from the old Tri-Rivers) had no chance whatsoever v the big Red Machine of Riverheads.

Every year you wildly resisted and refused to comprehend that Riverheads was that strong. It was funny for awhile then it got a little boring.

I think after the Big Red's 5th state title in row, you finally realized that sometimes Resistance is Futile. Then you started go wild over their enrollment numbers. It was funny for awhile then it got a little boring.

Of course, some Sussex folks used to also talk trash to Essex for many years. It was exciting and funny for awhile then after Essex gave Sussex about 7 beatdowns in a row, you guessed it, it got a little boring.

Maybe this will finally be the year for Sussex! That would definitely make it less boring! Good luck!

and Sussex beat 5 win Greensville and Southampton by about 40. Both 5 win 2A playoff teams just like Bruton and I'm willing to bet that Brunswick would have running clock vs. anybody in the NND not named Essex this season. Don't have a dog in the fight just point out some facts and a couple observations from teams I have seen this year

and they scored a bunch on a horrible Prince Edward team

If I were Vegas or FanDuel Sportsbook, I would put the favorite as Sussex -4.5 over Northumberland.

As for v Essex, I would open the favorite as, obviously, Essex -16.5 over Sussex or NHS.

Then adjust as the money came in, etc.

I still say that overall talent and skill wise Northumberland and Sussex are a toss up.

However, as we have seen many times in the past, discipline and organizational issues, too many penalties, poor line play, and a lack of continuous effort to the end have often hurt the Indians. Hopefully, these concerns have been addressed.

If not, then yes, the basketball season will soon be upon us.

You must be on some good stuff if you believe that. Dude you are desperate for something?
