Unstoppable pair. Treven Easter (23) and Darren Owens (6) ruled the night.
FRANKLIN- Franklin came in ranked #4 in the 1A poll looking to validate that ranking versus the Tri-Rivers champion for the past 2 years Brunswick. The Broncos didn’t realize that Brunswick was also looking for respect after dropping two games they felt they should have won. One thing for sure both teams came in with the accelerator to the floor for this one.
Brunswick came right out and marched down the field with running back Treven Easter going in from 5-yards out to make it 6-0 Brunswick.
Franklin knew they had to respond and they did. Going 80 yards in 12 plays ending with a 2-yard run by Javontae Baker to tie things up. Powerful fullback Jack Sykes would burst into the endzone to give Franklin the 8-6 lead with 4:21 left in the 1st. In less than two minutes the Broncos would lose the lead and be introduced to the top athlete in Southside Virginia.
Quarterback Darren Owens would run the read option to perfection as he would race 59-yards for the touchdown as Brunswick took a 14-8 lead with 2:54 left in the quarter. The Bulldogs defense would raise up and quickly get the ball. Set up a beautifully ran screen play to Easter, he would also go in for a short run to give Brunswick a 22-8 lead at the end of the 1st.
Easter would have his third touchdown of the night with 7:57 left in the 2nd as he would go in from 5-yards out. 30-8 Bulldogs were in control and it looked to be Easter’s night to dominate as the Broncos appeared keyed in on Owens.
Franklin would respond with their play of the night. Quayshaun Jefferson would break a huge run out racing the Brunswick defense for a 69-yard run to get Broncos fans excited and expecting the best. The Broncos would not be able to capitalize off the momentum.
Owens would blast off a 65-yard touchdown run taking the air out of the home crowd to give the Bulldogs a 36-16 lead. On the next Bulldog possession, Owens would do it again going 71-yards for a score this time. The Bulldogs up 42-16 at the half and the Broncos would be searching for answers.
In the second half, Owens and the Bulldogs showed things weren’t going to change as he dashed through the heart of the Bronco defense from 39-yards out to give Brunswick a 48-12 advantage.
Franklin responded quickly and a drive in hurry up mode. It ended with Baker rushing in from 15-yards to cut the lead to 48-22. Franklin would recover the onside kick and the crowd was expecting a rally. However, on 4th and 12 Franklin would be stopped inside the redzone.
Owens would get a chance to showcase his strong arm as his threw on the run from opposite sides of the field to connect to Tyreese Fisher for an 81-yard touchdown pass. Brunswick would be up 54-22 with 1:01 left in the 3rd.
In less than 15 seconds, Darrien Duck would find Natrone Lee for a 54 yard touchdown pass and would also connect with him on the conversion. 54-20 with 0:47 seconds left in the 3rd.
Owens would add another run for score. The senior qb would then go in from 30-yards to take the advantage to a 60-30 lead.
Franklin’s Duck and Lee would connect again for a mismatch they would out too late as Franklin dropped their first game of the season 60-36.
Coach Harold Williams of Brunswick stated, “We are still not where we want to be. We have to fix some things defensively or our run (playoffs) won’t last long.”
Brunswick’s Owens rushed for 361 yards on the night and was 4-6 passing for 136 yards. The standout of the night has an offer from Old Dominion with several other programs considering.
Owens huge night with 497 total yards gave the Broncos nightmares.
“Young men like that don’t come around a lot. A yes sir, great student, and works a job on the weekend guy. Guys like Darren Owens don’t come around often, “ stated coach Williams.
Easter added 101 yards and 3 touchdowns. As a team Brunswick piled up 616 yards of total offense.
