Richlands vs. Appomattox

Richlands vs Buckingham the second half was domination. Richlands also took a knee and could have scored again with a minute and one half left or you have a 42-20 (3 TD margin victory). Appo and Buckingham was as we all know, a nailbiter. Richland completely shelled an Abingdon team (way worse the than the final score) and Abingdon beat Rustburg at Rustburg and just beat Northside at Northside. Keep in mind, Rustburg and Appo was a battle. Can we make much of scores and comparison when common opponents are not played? No. It's voodoo hooplaa and we can not make much of this, but....it is one area where Richlands favors well if we choose this route. When looking at opponents played of the common opponents, Richlands looks good on paper, but it is just that......paper. The game is not just about athletes. The skillplay on the line of scrimmage and size and strength matter. Richlands is as big, strong, and skilled on the offensive and defensive line of any team in AA ball. Like Appo and it's athletes in which we are just not going to find another AA team with more athletes than Appo, that applies to Richlands on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. In the second half, they just wore down Buckingham tonight. Added to all of this, they also have athletes all over the field. They don't have more than Appo, but the gap is as close than any other AA team will come to closing it in Richlands. They are big, fast, strong, very smart, very skilled, very well coached, and again....they have athletes. This should be a great game. I can assure though, the winner is not the automatic state champ. In the West, Glenvar is still the remaining champ for a reason. DEFENSE. And they beat a Giles team that had been doing nothing but getting better, and better, and better all season, and Glenvar again rose to the occasion in the big moment, and won the game. Any team is going to have a tough time with Glenvar. With that said, like some may feel the best two teams may be Richlands and Appo, the other argument rests with Glenvar of course, and its opponent in Union. Union apparently has one of those classic old Powell Valley type teams that just does everything well. Big, Strong, Fast, Well Coaches, athletes everywhere, can run it and throw it. I believe this.......

The state champion will be from the west and its one of the four in Richlands, Glenvar, Union, and Appo. All of them are close and it could come down to turnovers. I can tell you this....if Union is back to old form when it was Powell Valley, and according to many of their fans, they are, then this is a bunch that nobody wants any part of. Not disrespecting Appalachia as they were tough in their own right, but Powell Valley was the freakin Hampton of Southwestern VA Single A ball at one time and they always seemed to have more players (talent) than anyone. If this bunch has returned to old form, Glenvar is in a mess next week.
The last game with Abingdon and Rustburg was at Abingdon and there was a controversial call.

I wish I hadn't listened to the second game (2008)....definitely my least favorite of the three matchups.

Brookville ended up losing to James Monroe in a 50-46 shootout championship game that year. I believe you got your blowout revenge against Brookville in 2010 before losing a heart breaker to Poquoson 23-17 in the finals.

If you want to see Appo. in action go to https://www.youtube.com/user/GBCALIVETV. There are a couple of full game videos there including the game against Amherst and the playoff game against Lee High. The games are produced by the local cable company.

I spoke with the A.D. today, he said that there will be some information about the game in yalls local paper soon. This is what I got. He said that there will be shuttle locations from various locations around the town. We have a big factory (Thomasville) that was shut down a few years back and they are trying to work out the details if we can use their parking lot. That is a good location because it is right after you come off the exit entering Appo.

He also said there will be some bleachers coming in to try to accommodate Richlands fan base. Also, he is going to open up the gate earlier than he did with Lee High. Appo is trying to make it easy for everyone. Our bleachers are not that big on visitor side because the teams we play rarely fill them up. Lee High last year had it packed and Amherst this year had it packed. Not use to seeing them bleachers full but Im sure they will be Saturday.

Wiki is right, they dont have a walkway up and down, you have to step over the bleachers to get to the top.

Yeah ALIVE TV does a great job at recording these games and the commentary. Appo only received 2 games from Richlands, I dont know what games yall got of ours.

Okay, Im thankful for the respect Richlands has for Appo and that is great and we feel the same about you guys.
Yall keep telling me Im crazy for feeling like Appo is the underdog? Im actually surprised that many are saying we are going to win? Shout out to @BCKnights and others on the board.

Let me explain, many over here in Central VA believe that anyone that comes out of SWVA are the favorites most of the time (post Gretna heyday). If you say the word Giles, Glenvar, Richlands, or Union around here people give much respect to what they have accomplished. Even Riverheads gets mad respect and they are in upper mountains, but west (atmosphere and team reminds me of Giles). Appomattox has never won a State Championship in the big three (football, basketball or baseball). We usually have mediocre years or quality years without advancing past 2nd round. This year is great year for us, but have we gained respect from others? Well? Look at this very own website's rankings. They have us at #5, not to mention BEHIND RICHLANDS. Plus without the win vs.Amherst, we would have never accomplished that #1 in West.

Coach Smith brought in a great system (3 years ago, now in 4th year) with the split back veer and that is something FEW teams in VA use. I didnt like it at first, because I thought you couldnt pass out of it. He proved to me that you could. These kids have been brainwashed with it. He has a excellent coaching staff that surrounds him that loves these kids like their own. This freshman class is the first to use it in Appo, now they are seniors. Looking forward to a great game.

I like Richlands QB game, but I would love to see him work under pressure. Yall have a great line and they protect him well. Reminds me of Tom Brady the way he can just sit around back there waiting for stuff to develop.

I recall standing room only watching Giles at Powhatan back in 96? 97? .... Not sure...back before Powhatan's enrollment skyrocketed and they were single A. People were surrounding the field. I've been by the field at Appomattox, all be it, years ago....I think the situation may be similar. Lots of folks will be standing during the game to see this one, I believe.

How is the hone seating? Is it mostly reserved seating for season ticket holders? Back in 2006 at Hidden Valley I believe Richlands filled the majority of the home stands for Hidden Valley and the visitor side. This has the same potential on Saturday I feel like.

In the pouring rain for that game...and Powhatan actually jumped to what would now be 4A the very next year...good gam...gave all we had but it wasn't enough in that monsoon against them big boys...but we packed midlothian that day in the rain

Dude, you guys are 10-0 and have hammered your opponents. Other that BC who is very very tough, you have dominated. How on earth can you feel like the underdog? Do you have to win by an average of 50 per game to not be an underdog? Forget about Virginia Preps AA rankings. They are meaningless regarding their rankings. Did you know that before the season, Richlands was not ranked in the top 10? Serious on that, they were not ranked. I recall a big discussion on this board asking the moderators what on earth they were thinking in that Richlands was solid last year, but had tons of starters back and had a team coming back that many have talked about since 8th grade, yet they were unranked. Va Preps is meaningless. Bottom line is this......Glenvar, Richlands, Appo, and Union are all right there.....as is Buckingham County in my opinion. All 5 teams are very, very, very close in talent and level of play. All 5 teams can beat one another regularly if they played 100 times.

My wife is originally from Poquoson and her little brother played on that Poquoson team and I watched that game against Richlands. Hats off to Poquoson, but I will say this........and I am a High School Official......that was the worst officiated state playoff game in Virginia I have witnessed. I truly feel like Richlands was jobbed in that game. They were 2 touchdowns better than Poquoson and it seemed like every first down for Richlands that gained 15 yards was a holding call only to end the drive by started 1st and 20. Credit Poquoson for the hard fault win, but that game was so poorly officiated and heavily in favor of Poquoson that it is just one I will always remember as I have officiated many years. It was so bad that the officials got a good scolding from the VHSL and they should have never been able to officiate again if the VHSL would have done the right thing. My nephew told me after the game, "we thought we had a chance and just wanted to keep it close and have a chance to win it late, but man, we might have got some calls." LOL, I kid you not, this is what he told me. This could had just won a title and was in the heat of the moment and I was excited for the Bull Islanders and rooting for them, but even some of their fans jokingly when leaving the stadium were talking about some of the calls

Actually Logan was already at VT this was the year they had Koran Kirvin that signed with Bama

2008 was the year James Monroe beat the Logan Thomas led Bees in the shootout. IMO Logan never should have been a QB beyond high school. After VT, Arizona drafted him as a 2-4 year "project", but cut him loose after 1 year + a preseason. Now he is the practice squad QB for the Dolphins. I believe they are hoping he can take over the #2 spot on the roster soon. I also believe he will have a much better chance of success if someone moves him to TE.

Expecting a great game in Appo, on Saturday.

You are correct it was Logan in that game that lost to JM, I was there because Amherst played right after and lost to Broad Run

As I recall (I hope correctly) it started snowing between the Brookville and Amherst games and accumulated on the field. At the beginning of the game one of the players (Broad Run I believe) was running uncontested toward the end zone and dropped the ball because he thought he had crossed the goal line.

I have always said that about Logan. TE was best spot for him. We say that but i dont even know if he had hands? Did he?

He did/does. Made a lot of good catches at Brookville before being moved to QB. Of course his size helped a lot.

Take a look at this video showing a catch he made at VT.

The story behind that one is that he was sent on the field unexpectedly for that play and did not have his "gloves" on.

The ending of that game still sticks in my craw. Richlands had back to back holding calls on their last drive deep in Poquoson territory...no surprise with that officiating crew....but what still annoys me is that Richlands couldn't stop Poquoson from gaining the first down that allowed them to run out the clock. Championship players make championship plays, and we didn't get it done that day.

There were a lot of bad calls in that game for sure, but, like stormwatcher said, we still had our chances and couldn't make a stop when we needed it or the play on offense that would put us in a position to win. Poquoson made the plays when they had too. The RB's they had ran hard and with heart and would not go down easily. Their D was tough and physical.
Our QB at the time, didn't have his best day either, and was over throwing some wide open receivers, but I still give Poquoson all the credit, they played hard and made plays !
What I remember also from that game was when one of their receivers when up to catch a pass over the middle and was sandwiched between 2 of our defenders and hit very hard.........so hard ( if I remember correctly ) it lacerated his liver and kidney and they had to rush him to the local hospital for surgery. It was touch n go for a while. I kept in touch with one of their fans that happen to be very good friends of the family of that player for quite a while to keep up with his recovery. He pulled through and was fine but it was a long hard recovery for the young man.

I've been watching SWVA football for a while but never posted on here but since everyone has an opinion here is mine....Richlands wins BIG on an overrated Appomattox Raider team. Rustburg,Amherst and Heritage were horrible this year which pumped up their ranking. They just did beat Buckingham in OT when the Tornado's dominated them last week. I personally think Va Preps ranking has it right with 3 SWVA teams 1,2 &3 and Appomattox being a toss up with Buckingham at 4th"- Appomattox is definitely not the best team 2A team in the state. I'm not being disrespectful because I see where the team and community have come together, however this week it's all about smash mouth football and only one team moving on while the other is done. Coach "M" has been here before with his teams and will have them ready.

Appomattox has not seen a QB like Richlands has. I predict he and his wideouts will look like Tom Brady & Company and pick apart the Appomattox "Speedy" D. Richland has two stud linebackers who with the big and physical D line will keep the Appo running and passing game in check.

Anything could happen but I say Coach "M" and the Tornado's easily get the "W" 42-10 over Appo. I will also boldly say it will be an all SWVA Final with Richlands and either Glenvar or Union. Just like in the past with Powell Valley or recently with Giles & Glenvar- " the Boy's are Coming Down From the Mountain to Get The Job Done". Get ready ...Go Blue Tornados and SWVA football!

I think the line for Buckingham was a lot better than Appo's. Buckingham must not have had it together for the first game or maybe had injuries. I predict The Blue Tornado's will control the line of scrimmage on both "O" and " D" and that will be the difference. I watched Appo earlier in the year at Altavista and the lineman looked "lost". Their talented backs cover for a bad line that stands up a lot and misses easy pickup blocks- they are very sloppy. If you take out all the hype-I really don't think it will be close at all. Except for their first game , Richlands has rocked and I think they and Union will battle for the championship. Richlands will get a chance at revenge unless something crazy happens and Glenvar beats them.

I FREAKING LOVE IT! 42-10?! LOVE IT!!!! And yall keep saying yall are the underdogs? Many people feel like this. Thank you @SWVAPigskin for chiming in!

For the record, that Altavista game was one of the worst games for our lineman. Glad you picked that up from game and you are being truthful about that. QB had to run around and take some losses. 2nd half they adjusted well though.

From the Appomattox A.D.

Due to the large crowd expected to be attending the home Regional Football game against Richlands High School on Saturday Nov. 28th, Appomattox County High School has secured overflow parking at the old Thomasville Factory on Founders Lane, Appomattox Virginia 24522. Shuttle buses will be provided, free of charge, to take spectators to the game starting at 1:30 p.m. These buses will be taking spectators back to the Thomasville parking lot starting in the third quarter of the football game and running until approximately 45 minutes after the football game is over. There will be staff members at the Thomasville Parking lot to assist with parking and loading/unloading of passengers.
The ticket booth will open around 12:00 p.m. to purchase tickets. No one will be allowed admission to the stadium until that time as it will be closed in preparation of the game. Just a reminder that tickets are $7.00 due to this being a region football game. No ACHS passes will be accepted.
We look forward to seeing you at the game to help support our Varsity Football team.

Richlands travels as well as any team I've ever seen, for big games, no teams travel like Richlands and Gate City, so expect the Tornado crowd to be there early and loud. As a fanbase, you couldn't ask for more.
I know nothing about Appomattox, I've only been to the place once in my life when I was young with my dad visiting Civil War sites, but I do know Richlands travels well, is extremely well-coached, and will show up. I don't expect a blowout either way, you don't survive this long to play in huge games if you aren't any good.

Pigskin does not speak for 99.9% of the Richlands fans. More than likely they are not even a Richlands fan. That happens sometimes when you are hated as much as we are and thats ok....we understand.

Just wanted all the good people on this board to know this persons post is IDIOTIC ! We are the underdogs and should be. We are just glad to still be playing. Thanks for the information.....Advocate.

I'm a SWVA fan ..specifically Blacksburg so I'm used to being mocked. I just travel to games and I just spoke the truth. No need for the hard line Kev... I could be proved wrong but i doubt it. Statistics are statistics....numbers don't lie.

Anybody know if this game will be streamed live on youtube by Shentel? I noticed that Appomattox has been the Shentel game of the week a couple of times this season.

Anybody know?
No live streams, no radio stations. ALIVE TV only tapes it and then they will put it on youtube later in the week. Shentel usually will air it the following week.

On the WGTH radio web site WGTH.net (Richlands), it shows that they will be broadcasting the game live on the radio station and that broadcast can be accessed live on the Internet via their web site. I have listened to their broadcasts in the past and think that they do a good job.

For the record, people predicting wild scores that have their team losing badly are usually fans of the said losing team trying to project being an underdog. Teams at the high school level are not as capable of winning as the favorite as they are playing the underdog role, high school kids are not as capable of realizing they are better and out executing teams.

I will say Phil Robbins did a great job of instilling that, you dont have to be the underdog to play hard with grit and execute to win. Executing wins games, the executing teams almost always win unless its a huge talent gap.

Im speaking on Appomattox radio stations. Not Richlands. Sorry for the confusion.

@SWVAPigskin according to @BigWinners, you are from Appomattox? COME ON OUT and stop acting crazy if you are.

I never said he was from Appomattox, I said fans will often give outlandish predictions to play up any form of slight or underdog feeling. I've done it, I'm sure you have as well, my point was its not an accurate portrayal of how Richlands feels because of one post.

FTR, I think Appomattox, being the number one seed, is the favorite. The home team, an undefeated home team, the top seeded team, has earned the right to be the favorite. Richlands has lost this year, Appomattox has not.
