Richlands vs. Appomattox

I've been watching SWVA football for a while but never posted on here but since everyone has an opinion here is mine....Richlands wins BIG on an overrated Appomattox Raider team. Rustburg,Amherst and Heritage were horrible this year which pumped up their ranking. They just did beat Buckingham in OT when the Tornado's dominated them last week. I personally think Va Preps ranking has it right with 3 SWVA teams 1,2 &3 and Appomattox being a toss up with Buckingham at 4th"- Appomattox is definitely not the best team 2A team in the state. I'm not being disrespectful because I see where the team and community have come together, however this week it's all about smash mouth football and only one team moving on while the other is done. Coach "M" has been here before with his teams and will have them ready.

Appomattox has not seen a QB like Richlands has. I predict he and his wideouts will look like Tom Brady & Company and pick apart the Appomattox "Speedy" D. Richland has two stud linebackers who with the big and physical D line will keep the Appo running and passing game in check.

Anything could happen but I say Coach "M" and the Tornado's easily get the "W" 42-10 over Appo. I will also boldly say it will be an all SWVA Final with Richlands and either Glenvar or Union. Just like in the past with Powell Valley or recently with Giles & Glenvar- " the Boy's are Coming Down From the Mountain to Get The Job Done". Get ready ...Go Blue Tornados and SWVA football!
I agree with your pick but Amherst and Rustburg were not horrible. But their rankings went up because they beat a 4A school

From the Appomattox A.D.

Due to the large crowd expected to be attending the home Regional Football game against Richlands High School on Saturday Nov. 28th, Appomattox County High School has secured overflow parking at the old Thomasville Factory on Founders Lane, Appomattox Virginia 24522. Shuttle buses will be provided, free of charge, to take spectators to the game starting at 1:30 p.m. These buses will be taking spectators back to the Thomasville parking lot starting in the third quarter of the football game and running until approximately 45 minutes after the football game is over. There will be staff members at the Thomasville Parking lot to assist with parking and loading/unloading of passengers.
The ticket booth will open around 12:00 p.m. to purchase tickets. No one will be allowed admission to the stadium until that time as it will be closed in preparation of the game. Just a reminder that tickets are $7.00 due to this being a region football game. No ACHS passes will be accepted.
We look forward to seeing you at the game to help support our Varsity Football team.
Posted the same thing when Amherst played them but it was at the middle school but there is not enough bleachers and they are terrible

I watched some 2A East as well and Clarke County is overrated. They don't have the talent they had several years back with the Shiley brothers. I'm just honest...if they were better than 2A West teams I'd say that to. Rich lands by 2-3 Td's ...I'm out

I live in Blacksburg and travel around during football to watch teams. I based my pick and score based off of the common opponent Buckingham as well as strength of schedule. Other 2a schools could have beaten Amherst and Rustburg.. They were bad for 3 and 4 A teams. As far as bleachers I haven't been to Appomattox in a while but they have a nice stadium for a small school. I would be more worried about getting spanked by a 2a team than the bleachers if I was a big 4A squad.

How many Blacksburg games did you get to see this year? They've moved near the top of my favorite SWVA teams, since they now have a former Tornado heading their program. Coach Wells was quarterback of the 2004 team from Richlands that lost to Salem in a whale of a game in the state semifinal.

I'm curious as to why you say Amherst, Rustburg, and Heritage were all horrible this year? All three made the playoffs and Amherst beat 9-1 Pulaski in the first round. 3 of Amherst's 4 losses were to undefeated teams. Rustburg loss to undefeated JF and Appomattox, Amherst (who probably had one of the toughest schedules in the state) and 7-3 Brookville. I think it's inaccurate to say a 12-0 team is overrated. I also think it isn't very smart to predict such a score against a team that is averaging 37 pts a game on O and only giving up 7 on D. I'm not sure who will win as both teams are very, very good and well coached but I believe it will be decided by 10 points or less.

On another note, John Luke is a good QB but, from what I seen on film, he hasn't had to work under much pressure this year. I'm willing to bet that the Appomattox D will put pressure on him all day and make him run the ball or make throws under pressure.

Good luck to both teams!

I think the line for Buckingham was a lot better than Appo's. Buckingham must not have had it together for the first game or maybe had injuries. I predict The Blue Tornado's will control the line of scrimmage on both "O" and " D" and that will be the difference. I watched Appo earlier in the year at Altavista and the lineman looked "lost". Their talented backs cover for a bad line that stands up a lot and misses easy pickup blocks- they are very sloppy. If you take out all the hype-I really don't think it will be close at all. Except for their first game , Richlands has rocked and I think they and Union will battle for the championship. Richlands will get a chance at revenge unless something crazy happens and Glenvar beats them.
Lol, why would it be crazy if the undefeated, defending state champions beat Union?

Glad you went in on that, u took the words out of my mouth. Couldnt have typed it better. Amherst was a good team and had a tough schedule.

Just FYI, we have rowdy fans that will not take kind of visitors cheering on home side. Just a disclaimer. We are respectful to visitors, but i know that wont blow over well. We are a 2A school and our visitor bleachers are rarely full. So why invest in making them bigger? Yall have to understand that. This is by far the 1st or 2nd best season of Appomattox history.

Hey they beat us no doubt but we did lose our starting QB in that game. Besides people asked about the seating on this post and I responded. Richlands travels well and there are no where enough bleachers, the top row you can barely see over the teams heads, very large spaces between each row, only one bar on the top, no row for people to get down and if you bring a small child, good luck you better hold on to them or they are gone. So not sure what you remember but the stadium is ok.

In WV, they have a minimum seating policy and if a school doesn't meet the number, the game is moved to a neutral location that has the number. Just food for thought.
So u saying we should be playing in neutral area because we have never filled our stands until this year? Ridiculous

Are you kidding me? I've tried but you make it hard. See ya Saturday and good luck to your team and may I add that I am glad for the community that your area has had something good happen in the midst of all your alls tragedies. Around here our football teams has a huge impact for the good and I'm glad Appomattox is experiencing that.

I wish we were playing both games at Salem Stadium so everyone could see both.. Looking forward to going down to Big Stone Gap for the first time though.

No. I'm saying that in West Virginia, we would be playing at a neutral field. But we are in VA, so we are heading up.

The rule in WV has been good, it's caused schools to up their bleachers and stadiums from fear of not getting to host a game. I like that idea.

I agree to a certain extent. Wat if we were 1-9 for 10 years? We are not used to this? Yall need to respect that. I respect u and what Richlands has (fan base and winning history) but yall cant hold that against us for lack of stands. We are trying to make things better for yall, so be patient. Your boy kevtod need to cool it with the passive aggression.

I liked ya comment for the latter clause. U truly need to cool it passive aggression though. I love meeting new people and respect high school football. I rep Central VA hard and love when i see J.F., Brookeville, Heritage and much as i hate to say it Bucktown and Altavista (HATE THEM DURING THE YEAR) getting off. If i say anything negative about Richlands, u wanna come at me. Take a chill pill and buckle up for a wild ride.

There is a thread about the Jefferson Forest field on the 4A forum that references the link to the VHSL requirements for hosting semi and final games in all sports. The VHSL stated seating requirement to host a 2A football semifinal game is 2500.

Here is link to the VHSL document:

http://www.vhsl.org/doc/upload/facilities-requirements-for-championship-events1.pdf

It also says they need to be ADA compliant for handicapped individuals. Other note it said was locker rooms as well to dress and "hot showers" which I found funny that it included that the water had to be hot.

Does appomattox meet all the requirements?

I've saw both teams play this year. Appomattox will win this game easy. They just have to many athletes for Richlands to contain. It will be a decent game for the first quarter but then Appomattox will start to pull away. Good luck to both teams.

If Appomattox wins this game easy I will be shocked. That would be a huge statement. They definitely appear to have a defense capable of slowing down Richland's potent offensive attack, but I think people are really underestimating the defense Richlands has.

I think it will be a fairly close game and honestly I could see it being like the Wilson Memorial-Richlands game last year

Unfortunately those requirements are for state semis and finals. This game is still a regional game so there is no seating requirements to host. If Appomattox wins this weekend then a change in venue might be a reality for the semifinals

Not that I know the VHSL rules but if the seating requirement is 2500..unless they specify 2500 " per side", I expect that Appomattox meets that requirement as well as the Advocate stated that the Home side was ADA compliant . As far as locker rooms I expect they meet that- that is pretty standard. I expect that they are compliant to all of the criteria.

Ok, so now we have a blow out pick for both teams..........I don't see either one winning this game either easy or in a blowout ! BOTH of these teams are really really good and have earned their right into this game. Both have athletes everywhere with good to great defenses, and good to great offenses. Both are well coached so I just don't see either team winning this game easy.
I know it will be a close game and will bet it will be for longer than the 1st qtr. If either of these teams do fall behind in the 1st, they both have enough athletes that can score from anywhere on the field and score fast so either one can get back into a game, just like Richlands had done against Buckingham and against Va-high.
You can stop each O for a couple of series, but with the speed and athleticism on both sides, all it takes is one missed assignment or tackle and it's off to the races.
I may be wrong, but I just think it is going to be a tight & exciting game !

The VHSL does not enforce their requirements for hosting. If a school played in a cow pasture, they would still host. I recall 2007 when Gretna went to King William. That field probably did not meet requirements for a regular season game, but a state semi final was played there.

It sounds to me like Appo is making every effort they can to accommodate the fans and teams this week and that's all that be ask. Maybe in the future now that Appo has turned a corner and has been in the playoffs the last couple of years and it seems for the foreseeable future they can look at upgrading their visitor stands a little. Most teams that are in the playoffs will bring a lot of fans, maybe not to the extent of a Richlands or Gate City or Giles, but usually more than the regular season.
But I do appreciate that Appo's athletic department is working hard to make this as good of a experience for both sides as they can.
JMHO

Any idea why Amherst just went into the upper field and sat down? Is the visitor locker room a long way away?

For some reason, Buckingham chose not to go to the locker room Friday night.
Honestly, i dont know why some teams opt not to go to locker room. I think Dan River stays on feild too.
No, the locker room is only about 100- 125 yards away from feild. Behind out tennis courts and gymnasium.

This post was a breath of fresh air. They are trying to accommodate you guys.

Yes they do! Vhsl made Essex move their game with Haysi from Essex to King William last year because Essex didn't meet the requirements to host a state semi game.

If you have seen both teams, then you would not have that opinion. Too many athletes for Richlands?? What are you, a comedian?
