Just saw the highlights on the news. Final score was 71-56. Brand new school playing its first ever game against an established powerhouse....certainly not what I expected to happen. I guess that means The Raptors will have a sport of choice, at least for this first year in operation.

Boys Basketball, Soccer and Track & Field will all be very competitive at the district and regional level this winter and spring. The hoopers(6 football players) have home/away OOD series' with Riverheads, Staunton, Western and Cville. 6 games in the first 16 days of the season including rival Harrisonburg on the 12/20. We've got two players over 6'1 but get up and down with 3/4 good ballhandlers. Coach T came from Spotswood, I'm very interested to see how much that match up goes. Spotswood clearly best team in Valley, won't be shocked if we're 2nd.

Rocktown gets after it. They play hard-lots of quick athletes. Would not be surprised if they finish 2nd in the valley.

Staunton is good but I think this is a down year for them. Will for sure compete to win the Shenandoah but they lost a lot. Obviously a program like that will always bounce back.

So is Rocktown actually playing a full district schedule? Since they didn't in football, I had expected the same to be true in basketball.
Yes all other sports are full Valley Members this season. Football is the only sport that we weren't able to play full Valley district schedule this first year. It was 2nd year of two year cycles for football which made this seasons schedule so unique. Next football cycle we've got Page, Staunton, Monticello, Cville OOD and Valley (TA, Swood, Bway, ERock, WillMonroe, Hburg) for 10 game schedule.

....so where does that leave Blue Streak hoops?

I caught some of a Staunton "scrimmage" on NFHS - looks like an entire new starting lineup - young team not much height

so sounds like they got the short end of the stick (so to speak).

Yea it feels like it's been several years since Staunton ( RE LEE) had any height in their lineup - probably not since Jarvis Vaughan and Darius George ( when they won state one year, and then lost to Gate City (Mac McClung) in the finals the next )

STAUNTON — A week ago, Staunton was on the wrong end of a 15-point decision against Rocktown in the season opener. Tuesday night, the Storm turned the tables, beating the Raptors 59-46 behind 30 points from Joaqin Bell.

"Tonight, I think our defense was a lot better than it was the first time," said first-year Staunton coach Kevin Madden. "The first time we were just putting everybody together, trying to figure out what we had."

The win improved Staunton to 2-1 on the young season.

Trailing by four heading into the fourth quarter, Staunton started the final period with a three-point play from Leon Woodard then forced a missed shot and three turnovers in a row by Rocktown. Staunton scored off of all those mistakes by its opponent to go in front by five.

"Our defense was the main thing, to be honest," said Staunton senior Ky'Ree Scott when asked about the difference from the first meeting with Rocktown. Scott had a steal and bucket in that fourth-quarter stretch that helped Staunton pull away.

Staunton outscored Rocktown 27-10 over the final eight minutes for the win. Bell hit 10-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

"I can trust him anytime with the ball," Madden said of Bell. "He's going to make mistakes, it's basketball, but I have his back regardless of what happens. I want him to be a team leader and that's what he's been doing since day one."

Woodward finished with nine points and Scott had seven in the win, but it wasn't the scoring the made Madden happiest Tuesday.

"I think our guys played smart," Madden said. "And defense wins games. I love defense. You can have an off night on offense but never on defense."
