STAUNTON — A week ago, Staunton was on the wrong end of a 15-point decision against Rocktown in the season opener. Tuesday night, the Storm turned the tables, beating the Raptors 59-46 behind 30 points from Joaqin Bell.
"Tonight, I think our defense was a lot better than it was the first time," said first-year Staunton coach Kevin Madden. "The first time we were just putting everybody together, trying to figure out what we had."
The win improved Staunton to 2-1 on the young season.
Trailing by four heading into the fourth quarter, Staunton started the final period with a three-point play from Leon Woodard then forced a missed shot and three turnovers in a row by Rocktown. Staunton scored off of all those mistakes by its opponent to go in front by five.
"Our defense was the main thing, to be honest," said Staunton senior Ky'Ree Scott when asked about the difference from the first meeting with Rocktown. Scott had a steal and bucket in that fourth-quarter stretch that helped Staunton pull away.
Staunton outscored Rocktown 27-10 over the final eight minutes for the win. Bell hit 10-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
"I can trust him anytime with the ball," Madden said of Bell. "He's going to make mistakes, it's basketball, but I have his back regardless of what happens. I want him to be a team leader and that's what he's been doing since day one."
Woodward finished with nine points and Scott had seven in the win, but it wasn't the scoring the made Madden happiest Tuesday.
"I think our guys played smart," Madden said. "And defense wins games. I love defense. You can have an off night on offense but never on defense."
