Started 2 freshmen, a sophomore, junior and a senior. Really gave Trinity all they could handle and looked like they would pull it out. Had a fight which ended the game. One of Trinity’s star players threw an punch at a Varina player. Really took away from a great game. Varina looks to be a serious contender in 5a. Those freshmen are really good.

Varinia has taken over the Capital District in Basketball! They were very good last year and looks like they are going to be the team to beat this year too.!

They will be very very good for the next 4 years. They remind me a lot of the IC Norcom teams of 2010 and 2011. I believe they will be the team to beat in 5a for a while, though Bird may have something to say about that. They start 2 freshmen, a sophomore, a junior and a senior. JV team looks really good. They play very good team basketball. AJ Williams is the name to remember. He ate Trinity up from 3 and on the defensive end. One of two freshmen starting on varsity!

Back in my day Varina owned the Battlefield District and was one of the better teams in Henrico County even thought we were AA at the time.

Varina basketball player Tyrese Jenkins will transfer to St. Anne's-Belfield in Charlottesville and reclassify, he announced Friday.

Jenkins is a 6-foot-7 forward who was named All-Metro in 2018, which was his junior season. He'll repeat his junior year at STAB and now graduate in 2020.

He was named Class 5 state player of the year, averaging 15.2 points and 7.7 rebounds. He also shot 32 percent (26 of 82) from behind the arc. Varina won the state championship, and Jenkins scored 21 points in the title game against Wakefield. Penn State has offered him a scholarship.

Class 5 State Player of the Year Tyrese Jenkins informs me he has returned to Varina, where he helped the Blue Devils capture their first state title last March.

Previously, Jenkins had planned to play for St. Anne's-Belfield in Charlottesville and reclassify.
