Another great season of football has wrapped up and our last bit of information about the year comes in the form of the VirginiaPreps.com All-State teams.

Before we get to the announcement of the honorees, let's take a quick moment to review the standards that we've put into place around the teams that we name each season.

First, we limit ourselves to just twelve players on each side of the ball with four specialists and one coach of the year. We also pick just one player on each side of the ball to be our player of the year which forces us to make very difficult decisions. Last but not least, because we limit the team to a mere 28 total players and because we want to honor as many as possible, we will not name a player at more than one position.

On the defensive side of the ball, we name four defensive linemen, four linebackers, three defensive backs and one 'wildcard' position that we generically name 'athlete'.

Offensively, we name a quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, five offensive linemen and one 'wildcard' position that we generically name 'athlete'.

**Note that the All-Underclass Coach of the Year is selected from a pool of coaches in their first year with their respective program**

No love for my man Devin Carper? He was all-underclass each of the past two seasons. He was his conference POY this year. VHSCA all star selection, had 6 tackles in that all star game. Rushed for 1667 with everybody trying to stop him each week and had 107 tackles on defense. I know somebody always gets snubbed but I was scratching my head looking for his name. Was he closer to being on the defense or offense or was he not really in the discussion?

BTW, I think you guys do a fantastic job putting these teams together. Don't take my post the wrong way.

He was closer on offense

I hope these selections calmed you guys that didn't agree with the VHSL selections?

Let me reiterate a few points.

1). The Virginia Preps "selection" committee is essentially free of political pressure. They answer to no one other than us forum fans.

2). There is no collusion, as is often the case with the conference, regional, and statewide group class voting.

3). The limited membership of the "selection" committee provides a chance to have a "prove it to me" discussion about why one player is more deserving than another. This is another reason they never put themselves on a hard deadline.

4). There has been widespread attention paid to teams and players from all over the state the entire season by the "selection" committee. Coaches and ADs are focused on a very narrow set of teams and players during the season. This isn't a fault. Time just does not permit them an opportunity to be "just a fan".

5). The division between being selected first team or second team by the Virginia Preps guys is exceptionably honorable. The players that were heads and shoulders above their closest competitor are universally honored as first team. When it is arguable if more than one player is deserving of a first team selection, rest assured the merits of each player are argued and debated based upon their performance, nothing else. No "you support my guy, I'll support your guy". The end result are choices that stand on their merits.

6). As the season develops, and players of interest are identified, the Virginia Preps team is free to attend any game they wish. They get a first hand look at many of the players that eventually become candidates for selection of honors.

In my opinion, there is no equal to being selected for All State honors by the Virginia Preps staff.

(How was that Rod? Is my check in the mail?)
