I'll pick Woodside only because one of Phoebus's best players transferred out over the summer to a private school program. This game was very close last year and the retained continuity for Woodside should pay off vs the Phantoms.

#4 Woodside (8-0) v. #5 Phoebus (6-1): Peninsula District is on the line when the Wolverines and Phantoms meet up at Darling

#4 Woodside (8-0) v. #5 Phoebus (6-1), Darling Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Thursday

Last Meeting: Recruit757 labeled their 2018 matchup as the fifth-best contest played between the Wolverines and the Phantoms since they started playing one another in 1996. Woodside came into last season’s matchup with four victories in the win column with its only loss being a road failure against Highland Springs almost a month prior. Phoebus, on the other hand, was coming off of a week four loss to Lake Taylor and was looking to get back into the win column.

Jaylen White put the Phantoms up initially, but a Desmin Wright 26-yard touchdown run put the Wolverines up 7-6. Chris Daniels put Phoebus up on a 4-yard touchdown run and then Anthony Turner increased the lead to 19-7 on a 15-yard touchdown run. Tyler Thompson connected with Ricky Key for a 45-yard touchdown strike with five minutes left in the contest but it wasn’t enough as the Phantoms walked away with a 19-13 win.

Last Time Out (Woodside): Kecoughtan was able to do what no other Peninsula District program has been able to do this season and that’s put points on the board against Woodside. Albeit was only three points, but it was a stunning feat as the Wolverines have shut out the likes of Warwick, Gloucester, and Hampton. Woodside proceeded to go on with business as usual dropping 47 unanswered points on the Warriors. The win marks the fifth-consecutive victory for the Wolverines over Kecoughtan.

Last Time Out (Phoebus): Turnovers, penalties, and dirty play from the Bethel sideline made its contest a little close than it truly should’ve been. The Phantoms were able to blank the Bruins last week by a final score of 23-0. Phoebus extended its winning streak to 23 games over Bethel and picked up its sixth-consecutive win of the year. The win kept Lafayette at bay in the Region 3A standings and still keeps the Phantoms in reaching distance of York and Hopewell.

Woodside Key Players: Kahleef Jimmison (2020 QB 5-10 170), Tyler Thompson (2020 RB 6-0 160), Andrew Chamblee (2020 DB 6-2 185), and Breyden Byrd (2021 DE 6-4 240).

Phoebus Key Players: Chris Daniels (2020 QB 6-0 175), Anthony Turner (2021 RB 6-1 185), Jaylen White (2020 RB 5-10 170), and Josiah Silver (2020 DE 6-2 225)

Three-Headed Monster
You know exactly what you’re going to get when you line up in front of Woodside. Their Wing-T is riddled with enough misdirection concepts that could confuse even the most disciplined defensive lines. At any point, any one of their talented running backs can break loose for a score. Throughout the course of the season there’s been a heavy dose Bryce Phipps, Tyler Thompson, and Kahleef Jimmison. All three were able to find the end zone during last week’s match up against Kecoughtan.

By now we’ve all be able to get a good look at not only what the Wolverines can do on the offensive side of the ball, but also the defensive side of the ball. The Wolverines are only giving up two points per game on the season and Kecoughtan has been the only Peninsula District program to drop points on the Woodside defense. It’s been a collaborative effort with guys like Tyreece White, Andrew Chamblee, and Koa Naotala leading the way for the Wolverines. Expect Woodside’s defense to make the Phantoms extremely uncomfortable on Thursday.

Composed Discipline
The Phantoms have been held to 23 points or fewer just two times this season. The first time was during a week one match-up against Lake Taylor and the second time came last week against Bethel. A 41-yard Chris Daniels touchdown run was wiped out by a holding call and Kymari Gray fumble within the red zone after trying to reach for more yards after completing a catch. 14 points were left on the board which could’ve really opened the contest up for the Phantoms.

However, it was composure and discipline showed by Phoebus against the Bruins that doesn’t get talked about enough. On the Phantoms last drive of the contest, a Bethel defensive lineman took a cheap shot on Ibri Harrell during a broken play that watched Chris Daniels scamper down the sideline for a decent gain. Harrell had his legs taken from him from behind and laid down on the ground tossing in pain for the next three minutes.

There was no retaliation from Phoebus as the Phantoms walked off the field with their victory to conclude the night. We’ve witnessed this type of composure all season from Phoebus as it’s just not in its nature to go back in forth with opponents. Expect the Phantoms to not change anything against the Wolverines on Thursday. The offense will be run through Anthony Turner and Jaylen White with Chris Daniels serving as the field general. Kymari Gray and De’vontae White are always a threat on the edge. As always, the Phantoms will be ready to field a strong team on both sides of the ball.

X-Factor: Anthony Turner (2021 RB 6-1 185) and Tyler Thompson (2020 RB 6-0 160)

It’s only right that this contest produce two x-factors based on the magnitude of this match up. Tyler Thompson isn’t just the fastest player on the Woodside roster he’ll also serve as the fastest prospect on the field come Thursday evening. The Wolverines have done a great job of maximizing his skill set by giving him the ball in motion and letting him create in space.

Meanwhile, Anthony Turner is the prototypical running back that Phoebus likes to hold in its arsenal. He has the strength of Daniel Wright powering in and out of gaps and he also has great breakaway speed once he makes it out of the hole. Turner can run inside the tackles as well as off tackle. Combined with Jaylen White, Phoebus possesses one of the better one-two running combinations in the region.

Verdict: This match up on paper looks as if it’s going to be the PD Game of the Year. Both teams have a combined record of 14-1, the Wolverines haven’t knock off the Phantoms since 2011, a win for Phoebus could put it that much closer to York and Hopewell — this story easily writes itself.

This is a game that will come down to who wants it more. Throughout this rivalry we’ve seen Woodside stop the run and Phoebus have to beat the Wolverines through the air. We’ve also seen Woodside go up by multiple possessions only to see the Phantoms play well from behind. If you only get to see one Peninsula District match up this season this is definitely the match up you want to witness.

Sloppy game, huge number of penalties killed several drives for both teams.

Woodside was too conservative with their plays after that early pick6 they threw. Phoebus has the athletes but they really never called the offensive plays to get them out in space.

Woodside's inability to score a TD with short & goal line to go twice cost them this game.

You picking Woodside because Thailand transferred out is hilarious...had to point that out. He wasn't that good to where his loss would effect the defense.

This Phoebus team has played together since middle school (some before then). It was an obvious win in my eyes. Honestly Woodside is decent and all but the defense numbers are exaggerated if you see the actual teams they beat. PD is horrible this year with only two teams that are truly postseason material. The PD being so weak scares me come playoff time for Phoebus because I have no clue how good Phoebus really is. Woodside will get destroyed by a Maury or Salem mark my words.

Yep i was wrong. Continuity from a good team last year. Oh well. Wish good lick for both teams the rest of the year!
