THE RVA SPORTS BREAKDOWN: VHSL Football Region Standings and Analysis

According to my calculations: If Atlee wins vs. Henrico, Powhatan wins vs. Richmond, and Hanover loses vs. Highland springs:

Atlee: 24.7
Hanover 24.7
Powhatan 24.5

This assumes that Huguenot beats Monacan and Spotsylvania beats Culpepper.

**I think the VHSL has the points incorrect for week 8 for Atlee. They gave them 10 bonus points when Armstrong only has 9 wins. They also gave Hanover 10 points for their win over King William when King William has only 4 wins. My calculations above are using the points that the VHSL has published on their website. Maybe I am missing something?? If you take away 2 bonus points for Hanover and 1 for Atlee then it would be the following:

Atlee: 24.6
Hanover: 24.5
Powhatan 24.5

Should be an interesting week 11!

VHSL did not give them 10 bonus points because of wins. It is written that way because they are in a different class.

So while it looks like 8/10, for Class 4 purposes it is 10/8 (10 for lost, 8 for their number of wins (since the numbers do not reflect games played this week).

Whether a win or a loss, teams get credit for a lower class team as if they are in the same class. So a Class 4 team will never have a lower base point than 22 for win or 10 for a loss. VHSL just decides to put those in as bonus points and not base points.

An example: Dinwiddie week 5, they beat 5-4 Class 3 Hopewell. On VHSL ratings it is down as 20/12. 20 as a Class 3 base, 10 for 5 Hopewell wins, and 2 for the different classification.

Same goes for King William. Currently on the Official ratings, Caroline beat a 3-6 KW. The official ratings show 18/10. That is 18 for Class 2 base points, 6 for the 3 KW wins, and 4 for the Class difference

STICK A FORK IN THEM

The VHSL should have a committee in place to ensure this type of stuff does not happen across the state moving forward.
I think the committee work should be pushed down to the conference or regional level with responsibility falling to the activities directors to verify AND certify eligibility reports and underlying documentation. Then random spot checks/audits from the state level with prescribed and increasing penalties for initial and repeated violations.

How was Bruton allowed to do this? That’s where I’m lost. Because the VHSL told Phoebus they could not drop Gloucester and Denbigh from their schedule and even more now since the move to Class 4.

Is Bruton ducking Lafayette?
It was agreed upon by all parties and the BRD due to Bruton’s trouble fielding a football team. They did play all other class 3 BRD teams. That crisis is now considered over snd they are back next year to play all BRD teams. I guess you say they were ducking Lafayette as the games would have been very uncompetitive. Don’t know the detailed specifics with the VHSL but all was approved.

Hayfield

I think the nail in the coffin is that so many transferred from Freedom to Hayfield. Down here in the 757 we see 1or 2 kids transfer every school year to other schools but 15 leaving destroys a program. Also, the kids that left Hayfield after the transfers arrived, were they starters before and lost their positions or told to leave. VHSL had to see something really bad for a 2 year ban. I feel for the student athletes that practiced everyday and worked out during the off season. Hayfield administration should pay a price also for this happening.
I think whether it is 1 or 2 or 15 or 16 or more, the the rule should be designed, implemented and enforced consistently. Clearly, the current Hayfield situation is a real life example of pigs get fat but hogs get slaughtered given its blatant nature. Not to be ignored are the adults involved in this situation as kids should not be the only ones to suffer the consequences and at the top of the list should be the FCPS Superintendent responsible for the initial "investigation".

On Lafayette’s first play a bubble screen went for a TD. Oops, holding call, that ends that. Found out starting center had dislocated knee cap and did not play. Made pass protection very difficult and run blocking. All night the running plays averaged about 3 yards, not a single long run. Poquoson totally stuffed the outside stuff. Great defense. Lafayette 2 tds came on drives after a turnover, as did Poquoson’s. Both offendes never got it going. Last bad thing was in 4th Q starting Rb Simpson dislocated his shoulder again. Status unknown right now.

One play sums it up for Lafayette: 4th snd 3 on Poquoson 35 yard line. 2 minutes to go to half, no TO left. 100% of time Lafayette goes for it. They punted!!! Incredible lack of confidence.

Last couple years Bruton only played class 3 BRD teams but excluded Lafayette. Next year Bruton will be playing all BRD teams snd move up to class 3.

Appeal lost!
Two comments, (1) the VHSL should be vigilant and persistent in administering sanctions against others committing similar infractions and (2) the VHSL has penalized the system, however, the system should discipline itself and its employees(the "adults") who aided, abetted and ostensibly attempted to cover up the situation. Kids should not be the only ones to suffer consequences.

Good luck Chuck and GW faithful. Please make my prediction come true. I said after our game against your Eagles, that you would not lose another game in the regular season.

BTW, you and crew would enjoy our meal tomorrow at the press booth. The best homemade chili you’ve ever eaten.
Tunstall is winless, so I like our chances.

I’m not so sure That you should discount your Spartans. I know that game against Pulaski was bad but the only two losses you have are two undefeated teams and you guys are known for getting better throughout the season. Don’t sell those guys short.
True. I think how the team plays tonight is a good measuring stick as to what will come in the playoffs. If they play good on all sides of the ball that should springboard them pretty good into the postseason. I’m just not sure if it’s as much of a dominant team on all three phases like years past.

Hayfield

Guys & Gals - I know this is a hot button conversation item right now or better yet THE hot button topic... your friendly Publisher here just wants to chime in and state that we make sure we ALL stay within the Rivals & VaPreps message board posting guidelines.

That means let's not resort to any name-calling, personal attacks or obscene languge.

I don't mind the lively, spirited back-and-forth. We're not all going to agree, nor should we. I just don't need my notifications blowing up on a Football Friday (or any day for that matter) from my Admin team / board moderators... that is all. :)
Thank you ! ! ! This thread was starting to slide toward Fairfax Underground/High School Football 2024 territory in tone and exposition...

This year's OOD schedule is the same as last year's for both teams. If OOD schedule was the deciding factor in who the better team was, the outcome would have been different in their playoff game last year. Every year and every team is different. That's why you play the game.
JF beat a very young GW team by a touchdown. Same GW team that went 5-5 last year and got destroyed in all of their loses. I still don’t think that has anything to do with JF’s soft OOD. GW would never schedule a C2 OOD nor even play Halifax if they choose.

Matoaca @ Dinwiddie

5C isn’t as strong as I hyped it up to be before the season. Matoaca, Bird and Louisa all have really good teams but definitely have their struggles as well. I think it’s a huge difference in Fleming coming 3.5 hours to Chesterfield and Matoaca going 3.5 hours to Roanoke, playing in the mountains on a cold November night/afternoon.
I think 5C is significantly better than 5D, I just think 5C is a very tight race with Matoaca, Fleming, Midlothian, Louisa, and L.C. Bird. Can't be surprised if any of those 5 come out of 5C. I think the 5C winner will be playing Maury in the state championship.
