Region 3C Boys Bracket

#1 Spotswood (21-2) vs #8/9 winner Fort/LCA
#4 Wilson Memorial (16-6) vs #5 Rustburg (13-9)

#2 Staunton (18-4) vs #7/10 winner Heritage/Broadway

2nd Rd Thurs Feb 23

I'm calling Spotswood-Cville title game. Don't be fooled by our record, if we can put together 4 quarters, we are the 2nd best team in the region. We held 4th quarter leads in 6 of our 10 losses. (Albemarle, Western, Fleming, Smithfield, Riverside, Fluvanna) Had a head scratching season opening loss to Broadway who we later beat by 30. Got blown out by Albemarle twice and Western once for the other losses. Bobby Gardner of Fluvanna is the best player in the region though so Rd 1 rubber match should be a tremendous game.

Catholic Claims TCIS title

Catholic (Virginia Beach) completed a perfect conference season by capturing the TCIS championship to go along with their regular season title by defeating the Steward School 66-45.

Junior guards Brayden Thorne and Josiah Rickards broke the game open with a big second quarter. The Crusaders led 22-16 with five minutes to go but pushed the lead to 31-18 two minutes later. A three at the buzzer gave Catholic a 38-25 halftime lead.

Catholic maintained a double-digit lead throughout the 2nd half and the outcome was never in doubt.

Setting the Record Straight: The 1995 Region A Girls Tourney.........

Nandua defeat Essex in the championship round. Nandua had a heck of a team with Kim Giddens. In fact, I'm pretty sure they were the first Eastern Shore to win a girls basketball title. Essex defeated King & Queen Central in the semifinals. I know all this because I witnessed it with my own two eyes. Games were played at New Kent.

The State Tournament Teams Are Set

The four regional championship games will be played either tomorrow or Saturday, but we now know the 8 teams who are State bound. Which two will make it to Richmond, where ultimately only one team will cut down the nets. For the record, I correctly picked 5 of the 8 teams listed when I did my regional picks. Middlesex, Twin Springs and Honaker proved me wrong, although I did have all three in the regional semifinals.

Region A: Lancaster and Middlesex. Middlesex has two losses on the season. Both were to Lancaster, by 51 and 32 points respectively. But both of those games were played over 2 months ago. Lancaster comes in undefeated and have been on a mission since their stunning loss in last year's state semifinals.

Region B: Franklin and Altavista. Altavista is a regular to the state tournament, finishing as runner up two years ago and losing to Westmoreland in the quarters last year. Franklin hasn't played at the state level recently, but this year's team is special. Length all over the floor and their defense leads them.

Region C: George Wythe and Auburn. This will be the 5th meeting between these two teams this season. GW has won three of those, but needed a buzzer beater to win last week's game. Auburn is the defending state champs and have a huge nucleus of that team back.

Region D: Twin Springs and Honaker. TS was the team that many pegged as the Region D favorite at the beginning of the season after returning the entire team that made it to the final four last year. They had a few more hiccups than most expected yet here they are back again. Honaker is a team that started slow this year, but finished strong. But despite winning their district, not many people, myself included thought they'd make it to the state tournament. But that's why they play the games and this team is playing exceptionally well right now and deserve to be here.

I'll do my state tournament predictions either this weekend or early next week, once the matchups are official for the state tournament.

Predictions Hatfield's VHSL Region Playoff Recap of Friday 2/24/23 Action + Playoff Picks for Saturday 2/25/23

Friday night produced some interesting results, maybe none more fascinating than Woodside rallying for a 57-39 win over Menchville behind 30 points, 17 in the fourth quarter, from Richmond signee Trevor Smith. The Monarchs saw their top two scorers – A.J. Clark (VMI commit) and Etienne Strothers (App State pledge) – go down with injury.

That result leaves us with four unbeaten VHSL teams on the boys side with John Marshall, Lancaster, Northside and Skyline.

If that wasn’t the biggest surprise of the night, it certainly was what happened in the Region 5D semifinals, where Stone Bridge toppled Potomac District Champ Potomac Falls 57-50. Kent Kling’s Bulldogs had lost to Potomac Falls in the previous three meetings by 15, 14 and 12 points. But now they are State Tournament bound and set to take on Patrick Henry-Roanoke, who they beat in the State Semis during the COVD-shortened campaign in 2020-21, for the regional crown.

The wildest comeback of the night came in Region 5C at Midlothian, where top-seeded Glen Allen erased a 64-52 deficit with 2:16 to go in regulation to beat Hermitage, 80-70 in overtime. Kris Tiller led the Jaguars with 31 points before fouling out. Hermitage’s leading scorer, Eiden Harvey, had 28 points before sustaining an injury in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars will take on defending Class 5 State Champ Highland Springs, which ousted L.C. Bird 62-52, for the Region 5C crown.

Below is a breakdown of how the Picks fared for Friday 2/24/23 with regional semifinals and regional title games.

6B = 1-0

5B = 2-0
5C = 1-1 (missed on Glen Allen/Hermitage)

3B = 1-0
2A = 1-0
2D = 2-0
