2023 NOVA+ Pick'em Week 1

Here we go with the 2023 Pick'em. Yes, we are centered on 6C & 6D but I expect to include a game or two of significant interest each week from outside 6C & 6D. Since this is early in the season I admit the spreads are probably a bit off with some of the games, so if you know of a particular team's outlook and I am way off-that should be an easy one for you. Best of luck!

All games are on Friday (per the VHSL master schedule). Please have your picks in by 7:00 pm Friday.

Brookville Head Coach Jon Meeks starts his 10th season at Brookville with a home contest vs. Patrick Henry; Raiders Doug Smith battles cancer again

Jon Meeks, the third winningest head football coach in Brookville High School history, is going for his 70th victory Friday at 7 p.m. when the Bees host Patrick Henry at Stinger Stadium live on WLVA 94.1 FM and Fox 580 AM. Coach Meeks has led Class 3 Brookville to 4 wins in 5 contests over the Class 5 Patriots. The Bees beat PH 35-27 in Roanoke last season. Head Coach Alan Fiddler's squad went to beat Salem 17-7 to tie the Spartans for the River Ridge District title. Coach Fiddler is the all-time winningest coach in Patriot Henry Football with 83 victories in 12 years. Meeks has won an amazing 25 out of 27 non district regular season games in the last nine years as the Bees' head coach. He told me at the Titan Trophy Awards ceremony Tuesday that he has one of his youngest teams ever and could start as many as 11 Sophomores vs. PH Friday including Lincoln McDaniel who takes over for his brother Drake who was a 4-year starter as the Bees' Quarterback. Senior Jor'dyn Whitelaw is coming off 1,000 yards rushing last year and Micah Pennix leads a stingy Bees defense. Both Whitelaw and Pennix were Titan Trophy finalists with Appomattox QB Gray Peterson taking the top prize as the best rising senior in the Lynchburg area. Raiders Head Coach Doug Smith, second in wins at Appomattox to only Gordon Bragg, continues to receive cancer treatments and will once again depend on Defensive Coordinator Stephen Castello to step up as he did in the Spring of 2021 when Appomattox won their 5th Class 2 Championship in 6 seasons. The Raiders battle the Knights for "The Axe" in Buckingham County Friday at 7 p.m. The beloved Coach Smith will seek his 117 victory at Appomattox, 130 wins overall as a head coach!

Blog LIVE Game Blog - 2023 Opener with Green Run at Kempsville

Greetings from Kempsville High School as the Chiefs play host to the visiting Green Run Stallions in a re-match of the past two Region 5A Championships.

Green Run won both of those, the 2022 encounter more convincingly than the 2021 clash.

Below is a Preview... follow updates here and via Twitter (or X as they now call it) @hatfieldsports ....

Green Run at Kempsville . . . The Chiefs are at home in this series for the first time since 2019, believe it or not, as the past five meetings, two coming in the Region 5A Championship, have been on Dahlia Drive at Green Run. Throwing out a forfeit win from the 2020-21 abbreviated COVID school-year, Green Run has won 12 consecutive meetings on the field between these two teams with the last triumph on the field over the Stallions for the Chiefs coming by a 7-6 margin in 2012. In last year’s season opener, it was Eastern Michigan commit Caleb Turner icing the 27-14 victory for Green Run with a pick-six.

In last November’s region title game, Green Run wasted no time striking with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Tasean Young-Stieff on the first play from scrimmage. Kempsville answered with an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the ensuing play, but the Stallions scored the next 43 points in a 50-8 romp.

Young-Stieff, Virginia Tech four-star recruit Keylen ‘Brodie’ Adams (97 catches for 2073 yards, 32 TD's the last two seasons) and Jayden Anderson headline a dazzling Green Run receiving core that will test the Kempsville secondary, led by Marshall commit Ryley McIntosh and fellow senior Darius Johnson. Keep an eye on the talent in the trenches, too. Green Run’s o-line is bolstered by 6’6” sophomore tackle Thomas Wilder, while Kempsville has 6’5” tackle and JMU commit Deacon Rawls.

Matt Hatfield Says – Green Run 41-20
Coach Ed Young Says –
Green Run 30-18
