Thoughts on this weeks Matchups

that can apply as well to other classes. I am trying to more inform my perception of VaHS football as played now compared to earlier times. My question is how many players on your current squad play both ways? I am not talking about the occasional play or series but, rather taking 50% or more of the snaps on both sides(offense and defense, excluding special teams) of the ball game in and game out. If you would like to respond please give school name, classification(6A, 5A, etc.) and the number of two way players. Thanks.

Jamar Tolson threw five touchdown passes to four different receivers as the Eagles opened their season with a nondistrict road win.
Tione Meade caught three passes for 125 yards and two scores from Tolson, who finished the night 12 of 18 for 296 yards. Jaylen Burrell, Trevay Jackson and Ahmon Ashton also had touchdown receptions, and Kenneth Madison ran for 97 yards and a score on six carries.
Westmoreland visits Eastern View next Friday.

Greetings from a warm and sunny Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk as the Titans play host to the Camden Panthers out of New Jersey, who won 10 games a season ago.

Interesting to note that Camden Head Coach Rob Hinson used to be an assistant at Norview in 1998 when the Pilots went to the playoffs. So he's familiar with football in the Eastern District.

Camden (NJ) at Lake Taylor . . . Hearts are heavy over at Lake Taylor with the recent passing of Head Coach Hank Sawyer’s mother as well as one of his best friends, longtime assistant Theo Ford. Sawyer, who is 229-58 in 24 seasons, has a tough task in the opener against a talent-rich Camden squad that is one of New Jersey’s finest.

At quarterback, 2025 prospect Deante Ruffin is a three-star for Camden with offers from Boston College, Pitt, Syracuse, Temple and West Virginia. On the defensive line are two next-level studs in DE Dylan Seay (6-5, 235) and DT Richard ‘Wink’ James (6-1, 265), a West Virginia commit. Braheem Long is a three-star corner with offers from Akron, BC, Kent State and others. Long could be given that tricky assignment of having to cover Titans monster 6’7” wideout Elijah ‘Moss’ Washington, who earlier this summer gave a pledge to Syracuse after hauling in 43 balls for 877 yards and 16 TD’s as a junior.

This game probably comes down to a couple of things. Camden has to be able to contain the run game, and the Titans twin-veer is tricky with QB Jamir ‘Sporty’ Freeman a threat to break a long run in addition to the backs. Like Lake Taylor, Camden wants to blitz on defense, but their offense is going to have to hit some big pass plays when they are there against the Titans. The matchup that most intrigues me is how Lake Taylor’s o-line with Roy Norfleet, Keyonte Arrington (6-8, 355), Trevor Hesson and company do against that d-line of Camden that collapses the pocket well.

Central beat Riverheads 8-6 Hard hitting slugfest. Play of the game was the scramble and completion by the Central QB to keep the drive alive for the win.

Strasburg beat Skyline 18-16 Sloppy but good win for a young Rams team.

Riverheads lost to Central 8-6 Will Riverheads bounce back.

Madison County beat Staunton 15-14. Madison with a close win in week 1. Could it be a good year for the Mountaineers

Clarke County beat Rockridge 42-7 Clarke looks a lot better than lat year.

Draft loses to King William 7-6 Hear Draft had way to many penalties. Seems like another hard fought game.

Buckingham loses to Appo 23-6 Know nothing about this one.

Luray lost to East Rock 28-14 Tough loss for the Bulldogs in week 1. Can they bounce back.

Page County lost to Washington WV 49-6

As mentioned below, Chris Rose's awesome annual high school football newspaper preview dropped today! It is always a big preview with lots of photos, details, players to watch for, coach's comments, and predictions etc. Plus, other local sports news and so.

The Rappahannock Times football preview covers all the Northern Neck and Tidewater teams (plus maybe a few others).

Once I read it over, I'll be able to make a few more comments about the upcoming season. Please discuss your takes as well if desired.

I get my paper delivered but usually pick up a few extra copies of the preview for some friends and myself.

I know that other high school fans not in the area often want to read it but cannot find a copy. The Rapp Times is also online now I think but maybe not for free...

I did not fully realize this until I watched my tape of "The Endzone" but the Shenandoah District teams went a very disappointing 1-6 in the opening weekend, with Wilson's romp over Charlottesville being the only win the district picked up. However, even more ironic is the fact that four of those losses (Riverheads, Stuarts Draft, Staunton and Buffalo Gap) were each by just one point.

I guess you could read any number of things into that. If you are an optimist, you could say "well they just as easily could have been 5-2 on the weekend." Or you could chalk it up to the fact that they all played even games against quality opponents and things just did not go their way. Or finally, if you want to look at the worst possible scenario, maybe the district will be down this year and maybe Wilson needs to be added to the list of contenders.

Whatever the case, we are just getting started. I only went 3-4 on this first weekend with my predictions so I guess you could say that I did not have that much better a weekend than they did! I will be back sometime early next week to look at the slate for Week Number Two, and hopefully we will "all" have a better outcome over the Labor Day weekend!
