Now that Riverheads is officially gone.....

The Eastern Half of Single A will look very different. With Riverheads and Central Lunenburg both headed AA out of Region B is it Buffalo Gap's to lose, will Sussex, Surry and Brunswick have a say so in this extremely weak region. Will Franklin return to past prominence? In Region A both regional finalist Essex and King and Queen Central both lost a lot. Could this be the year that Westmoreland or West Point or some other darkhorse makes noise in Region A. Will we have 4 new teams on the eastern half competing in the Regional Finals (well in Region B we know there will be because they both moved up). Who are some of your favorites in 2023 based on what everyone has coming back and breakout players?

Game Recap Graham Completes A Perfect Season

Graham celebrates a solid performance with the Class 2 championship!

SALEM
- Sometimes things don't go as planned but sometimes they work exactly as you expected. Graham seemed to be clicking on all cylinders for Saturday evenings Class 2 clash. Coach Tony Palmer's G-Men had a speed advantage that Central (Woodstock) could not hide at all.

The Falcons looked great for 2 plays defensively by putting the clamps on the G-Men rushing attack. The stadium however could feel something special was about to happen when quarterback Brayden Meadows stepped back and was looking deep. Braden Watkins would be streaking down the home sideline and would be connected upon in stride for a 67 yard touchdown strike.

Soon after as Central would drive to shift the momentum, the exact opposite happened. Watkins would grab an interception making the crowd go ballistic. Ty'Drez Clements would then dash from 11 yards out to the endzone to give Graham a 14-0 lead at the 9 minute mark.

Central would then remind everyone why they were there. Setting up a solid drive the Falcons would ride Junior powerback Tyler Forbes who gutted the G-Men defensive interior. Forbes would go in from 15 yards out to cut the lead in half with 3:21 left in the first.

Tyler Forbes was the only consistent bright spot for the Falcon offense.

Graham knew that they could strike by the air again based on the defensive position of the Falcons. Jamel Floyd would make a solid grab and go in on the 34 yard connection to make it 21-7 Graham.

Needing to slow the game down Central would try to maintain a good drive but the drive would stall. The Falcons would then execute a perfect fake punt to keep the drive alive with Nicholas Barahona hitting Nathan Lopez for a 22 yard reception. Knowing they get the ball back to start the 2nd half, a score would be big for the Falcons. Unfortunately, at the G-Men 12 yard line they would fumble the football and the score would be 21-7 at the half. That sequence would prove to be a championship changing moment.

Chris Edwards gets a great to keep moving the G-Men down the field.

The 3rd quarter would be filled with good defensive plays and almost broken big plays. Neither team could get on the scoreboard for the quarter as the Falcons could sense their time was running out.

In the 4th, Clements would put the dagger in breaking loose and showcasing the speed G-Men fans have been accustomed to. He would dish on a great move and then race the rest of the way for a 48 yard touchdown to make it 27-7 Graham with 6:32 to play in the game. Meadows would add the last score on a run as Graham captured the 2022 Class 2 title.

My New Top 10 (December 12th)

My #1 and #4 play tonight and #2 and #3 play on Friday night. Should be an interesting week. Also I noticed that Virginia Preps and I have the same teams in the top 10, but just in a different order. As always, just my opinion.

1. Lancaster
2. Auburn
3. George Wythe
4. Northampton
5. Twin Springs
6. Altavista
7. Buffalo Gap
8. Franklin
9. Narrows
10. Eastside

Honorable Mention:
Fort Chiswell
Carver Academy
Bland

Would Have Loved to See...

A potential Dinwiddie vs Highland Springs matchup. Winner can claim state title for Class 4 and 5 jointly, LOL. Have no idea what would happen and this thread will probably prove pointless but just thought it would be a great game, both in a similar area, 15-0, and played grueling schedules to make it to where they were. Got to see some of Dinwiddie on NFHS, man oh man, I think they could really give the Springers a run for their money, though obviously they are THE crown jewel program of Virginia. Anyways, on to basketball season...

Not HS Football, but I gotta vent!!!

I do not understand why the NCAA has a stupid rule that a team that moves up from FCS to FBS is ineligible for post season play their first year in the FBS. My God, JMU just showed they were the best in the Sun Belt Conference and should be in the Conference Championship game!!! Why can't they be bowl eligible as well? They played well in the FBS and had a winning record!!! Makes no sense.

Congratulations to Phoebus

Awesome team performance today! Speed on display all over the field. Defense was lights out as usual. Offense was very impressive too. Anybody catch Jordan Bass yet? I used to have an Atari football game that had a glitch where you could run the opposite way if someone got by you and come through the opposite screen to make the tackle. That might have been the only way to tackle Bass today. Looking forward to the Phantoms being in C4 again.

Maxpreps

I have always said Maxpreps is like wikipedia-can be unreliable because people can pretty easily manipulate or post false information. That being said, I think the Class 4 rankings have actually been pretty solid for their algorithm this year. Here is the Class 4 Top 10 on Maxpreps after the state semis.

1Dinwiddie14-048.311.7
2Kettle Run (Nokesville)14-035.15.9
3King George11-132.87.3
4Glass (Lynchburg)12-230.810.9
5Varina (Richmond)10-227.910.4
6Loudoun County (Leesburg)12-127.05.4
7Warwick (Newport News)12-225.18.8
8Salem10-323.87.2
9King's Fork (Suffolk)10-320.94.7
10Hanover (Mechanicsville)9-320.411.8

Personally, I think this list is how I would go as well. Louisa sits just outside the top 10 at #11. King George may ultimately prove to be better than Kettle Run (if Dinwiddie beats them convincingly) but until that game happens I think its cool how the last two teams are #1 and #2. Glass was #2 until KR beat them. Strength of Schedule is also always interesting to look at on here, and although the numbers can be skewed I think that the Maxpreps algorithm got it mostly right at this point.

Thoughts?

State Championships

For the first time in as long as I can remember, all 6 state championship games were basically blow outs. Graham-Central may have been best game at 34-7. I watched 1-4 often switching hoping to see a game. I know a lot complained about travel but the east-west format with cross bracketing state semis provided better championship games. Like this year I think Appo and Graham would have been played in Salem as would have the Riverheads-Essex game. In regions alot of the time one region or C&D or A&B can have two or more of the best teams and once getting out of region or semis games are more of blow outs like yesterday. Just think state championship games should be the best games of playoffs and this year they were far from that. Justy opinion but I know a lot didn't like the travel.

Dinwiddie 2023

@BleedingNavy and @DinwiddieProud first let me say congratulations to you guys, the players, coaches, and community! Heck of a season!

Now to my post...I noticed that Dinwiddie was pretty senior heavy this year, more so on defense than offense. Based on who started the State championship game, I believe every on offense graduates besides 2, 5, 6, 53, and 54 and everyone on defense graduates besides 18, 20, 42, and 45. What's the realistic expectation from the 2023 team? Do you think Dalton will have to play significant time on defense?

Just know what I know about Coach Mills and the Dinwiddie program, I would expect them to be very competitive and be one of the top 3 teams in Region B again. But it can be difficult to replace so many starters as well. Just curious on your thoughts.
