Below are the Top Ranked 2019 teams in each region. Will this list look differently in 2021? Remember, they are based on the VHSL PowerPoint system. So if a team plays a weak schedule but remains undefeated, it's possible they could be left on the outside of the playoffs.

Salem VB
Maury
I. River
P. Anne

H. Springs
Manchester
Deep Run
Varina

Stonebridge
Woodgrove
Briarwoods
Riverside

Mountain View
N. Stafford
P. Henry
Harrisonburg

See my post on the D6 Board for an answer to this same question.

My take on the Tidewater Class 5 schools down here.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I. River in Class 5 A could have the biggest problem. The bottom half of the S.E. District is pretty weak with no Suffolk schools participating this year! So, power points will be hard to come by.

The Beach District is loaded with very good Class 5 teams that could again be favored to win their title. Given that the Beach is all 5A & 6A schools, they could dominate the remaining open slots. Maury (Eastern), Salem, PA & Cox could all end up with more points!!

Okay, we are into week 2. Varina already lost to Hermitage. Do they replace them as a playoff team?

Princess Anne lost vs Salem VB in OT...
I. River lost to Deep Creek

Both teams are at risk of losing 2 games with PA still having to play O. Lakes & I. River still has to play O. Smith!!!

That opens the door for Bayside IF they're improved vs 2019, Cox & Woodside

in Reg A,

Maury will get a boost if they can beat Churchland. Expect them to be 5-1 & getting bonus points from L. Taylor winning out.

Bayside & Princess Anne have to play still 3/26

Cox has to play Kellam 3/26

Deep Creek will get bonus points from O, Smith and could be 5-1 if they can beat a much improved Western Branch team.

Class 5 Region A

Cox 3-0 27.33
Salem 3-0 27.33
Deep Creek 3-1 25.25
Princess Anne 3-1 24.25
Gloucester 1-0 24.0

First Colonial 0-4 14.5
Bethel 0-1 14.0

Maury 3-1 will interesting to see if they get IN the top 4. Next is Wilson 0-2, then, they finish vs Churchland. The Truckers game vs Lake Taylor was canceled due to Covid but no announcement about which team had the problem. IF Churchland cannot play next week, Maury may not get that bump of bonus points that they need to move up into the top 4!!

Gloucester 1-0 plays Phoebus 3-0 then Bethel 0-1. They could sneak in but beating Phoebus will be tough to achieve.

Princess Anne 3-1 plays Bayside 3-1 Friday which could be the play-in game for Class 5. Bayside is greatly improved with a new coach. The Marlins have the advantage of having another game vs Tallwood which they should be heavily favored.

Deep Creek 3-1. Losing to Oscar Smith may prove to be less of a problem as the Hornets can make some noise in the playoffs IF they get in. They finish with Hickory 0-4 then a much improved Western Branch team @ 2-2. The Bruins are fighting for playoff spot with their new coach leading the way.

Cox 3-0 could finish 5-0 but they have to get past Kellam 0-3 then Landstown 1-3. Kellam is probably the best 0-3 team in recent memory. They pushed Ocean Lakes to late in the game & took Princess Anne to 2OT before losing both. IF there is an upset on the 757 schedule this is it.

Salem 3-0 I picked the Sun Devils to repeat as Beach District Champs. Their Offense is improved AND their defense looks better too! They finish with 0-4 First Colonial. Their goal should be to stay healthy.

My prediction was pretty close. Maury got in only because Tallwood upset a much improved Bayside. Cox is 5-0 but no teams they played made the playoffs! Bayside was definitely the big surprise team in the 757 this year!!

Whomever comes our of Region A should make for a great game vs the Reg B team!
The Beach District is loaded with very good Class 5 teams that could again be favored to win their title. Given that the Beach is all 5A & 6A schools, they could dominate the remaining open slots. Maury (Eastern), Salem, PA & Cox could all end up with more points!!

Anybody picking Stonebridge to win it all?
No! Either team coming from the 804 or 757 will be too fast for them....like always! That rec league offense is easy to defend with speed and ANY team coming from those 2 areas has nothing but speed! FYI.....Highland Springs is ranked #1 in the state.

HooSprings, dude, relax. I had you on "Ignore" but for some stupid reason, I was curious. Back to IGNORE you go. My life is more peaceful this way!!

If you seek calm in your life, I recommend the "Ignore" feature!!

BTW, DeathPenalty, yes the 804/757 is tough but I Do admire Stonebridge's style of football. I won't be surprised to see them break through & win a State Championship!

Matt may have HS #1 but they have a real tough road to get another rematch vs SB. Hermitage, Salem VB, and Maury are all capable of playing May!!

If facts hurt....I don’t care if you “ignore button” me.

Time and time again I have watched Stonebridge struggle when they come out of that weak region, and face a team with speed that comes out of either the 804 or the 757.

All I stated was...Highland Springs was ranked number one in the state, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to win the state. Anyone coming from the 804 or the 757 has a tough road to get to the state finals, and that’s a fact. In the same voice, those teams face pure speed at every level to get there. Stonebridge faces nothing compared to any of those teams till they get to the state finals.

for the record, I call it rec league offense, because a lot of the teams the Highland Springs kids face growing up in rec league ball run that offense. Henrico High STILL runs it with more speed but less precision.

take care and good luck to OSMITH. See you guys in the fall!

Highland Springs QB play looks SUSPECT, #14 Nasir looked like he separated his shoulder and #12 has horrible reads(gifted a pick six that was DROPPED), the 3rd "option" #1 only knows how to tuck and run. I dont see HSHS winning titles 5 out of 6 years like my Phoebus Phantoms did. IMO ;)

I think everybody agrees that typically overall team speed with some of the 804/757 teams has been more elite over the years. No argument from me on that. I will say that Stone Bridge played HSHS (and last year Maury) as good as anyone generally has during those matchups. I wouldn’t sleep on Stone Bridge this year. They have some great athletes as well. Here’s to hoping all the teams can avoid Covid and stay healthy!!!

You are only going to get a partial argument from me,because I agree that #12(Dent) IS suspect at best with his decision making. That game against Varina Friday night is the first time I have seen that 6’4- 210 pound quarterback run the ball with any confidence. For the record, he was not the quarterback that ran the ball into the end zone against Varina Friday night. He was however very instrumental running the ball on the last drive of the game to run the clock out. He also had his yard run up the middle the playing before Jackson, the big running back, busted out for the 45 yard touchdown run. #1 had not taken a single snap the entire season. He may be a run first QB, but on his first play as a quarterback this year, he hits 1 of our division one wide receiver down the seem for 60 yards. On the next play, he showed he is the fastest player on the field, regardless of which team is out there, as he read the DE,and ran directly into the end zone from a yard out. He was 2 for 2, 66 yards and one rushing touchdowns. These two quarterbacks have a luxury throwing to 6 wide receiver with Power 5 offers. For the record,#1 threw 40 TD passes as a freshman for the JV! Nassir Will be more than ready to take over in the fall.

this team has ridden the back of the defense all year long. No one can argue the talent on that side of the ball! They may be ranked number one in the state, but that guarantees nothing, but it will also take one heck of a team to beat them! PG is up first, and it should be a great game between Hermitage and Manchester Friday night

So in Region A,

Salem (VB) vs Maury

This will be a big defensive battle. Both teams have athletes but they rely on their defenses to provide their opportunities. Salem has been tested with OT victories. Maury's loss to Lake Taylor show's their vulnerablity with teams that have very aggressive defenses. Maury relies on their big plays. This is too close for me to call. I just like Salem as a team.

Frank Cox vs Deep Creek

Cox is playing in Class 5 now and have always given Smith fits when they've met during the playoffs. They play a highly disciplined, run first type of offense & don't make a lot of errors on defense. Their only quality win this year was vs an erratically good then bad Bayside team that lost to an 0 for, Tallwood team.

Deep Creek is a grind it out, never quit type team who beat the teams they needed to except for Smith this year. They have the athletes that can make the big plays to win this game. This will be an exciting game & I think Cox pulls this one out.

So, who knows which team comes out of this region? I don't!

Calling the Stone Bridge offense “rec league” is ignorant as hell. Guarantee HooSprings couldn’t draw up most of their play designs if their life depended on it. Not to mention, HooSprings wouldn’t be qualified to hold Coach Thompson’s clipboard. Arrogant/ignorant comments like that (even if only from a few Springer fans) is what causes people like me to celebrate when Varina knocked HSHS out of the playoffs. No one cares about your six P5 WRs. I hope Hermitage takes HS out this year.

Put HooSprings on your "Ignore" list. Trust me. You'll enjoy this forum at a different level. We know HS is a very good team. We don't need his input to remind us.

Simple-minded fans think it’s always about their team. No one is saying Stone Bridge is better than HS, but insecure fans like Hoo Springs can’t fathom that it’s not all about HSHS. Calling a legendary coach’s VERY COMPLEX offensive system a “rec league offense” shows an insane amount of ignorance.

Hermitage better worry about Manchester before they start worrying about the Springers! 3-0 vs SB! HSHS,Varina, and hermitage are not that weak ars region SB plays in. It’s easy to be successful when the first round of the playoffs opponent is 1-5! We don’t care if you don’t celebrate a HSHS win over Varina, but I bet you’d be the first to open your mouth had they lost. Fact is....HSHS is still playing, and it’s gonna take a damn good team to beat them.

For the record.....The defensive kids were commenting, after the last title OVER SB,that “it was like playing in “rec league” again”.

If you notice,I put it in quotes because it was a direct quote from the kids that played against Stonebridge. Henrico runs the same offense.

I don’t like to speculate, but I’d love to see SB play Varina,HSHS,and Hermitage ALL in the same season like DRun had to. I doubt they’d make it through undefeated, but it’s possible. Again....I don’t speculate! Perhaps Sb could get HSHS this year, but 3 games to play before we can possibly see. A lot of land mines in HSHS’s way....not so much for SB!

Guess you’re just gonna put those HSHS kids on blast as ignorant. Weird way to support your program. You do you.

I already know how YOU feel about HSHS after the last time they left Hampton. 🤫

I mean, HooSprings can you remind all of us if HSHS has won anything recently? We all could use the refresher.

I don’t consider their comments ignorant....I think they were right! They grew up playing against it! They are 3-0 against it. The tougher game is always the week before.

Thought it was in quotes because it wasn’t your thoughts? Hmmmm

Hoo...you must be going stir crazy waiting for these playoff games to start. My goodness. You’ve got HSHS 1, sliced bread 2, and everything and everybody else in an inferior class. On the rec league note, you gave up 213 on the ground to a RB in the ‘16 championship game and 136 yards to a sophomore receiver in the ‘18 game. Rec league offenses may come back in style if that’s the case. Just seems a little harsh. HSHS had the better teams on those days, hence the final outcomes. Rec league is a just a wee bit overstated I would think.

I have no dog in this, so I am getting my popcorn ready. But from reading this season, Hoos has been more humble. Maybe it had something to do with saying (speculating) that they could play with and likely beat the top teams in the nation, yet didn't win their Region.

I kid I kid. Good luck to ALL the teams playing this week, whether it is a juggernaut, an overrated team, a 1-5 team, etc. Just a great thing that the KIDS are getting the chance to play

PG is 5-1 and they are Friday’s opponent. We’ll go from there. Whom ever they play will be “on the road” so let’s just sit back & see what happens. FYI...I’m on record saying,”I’m not happy with the QB play AT ALL”! With the current quarterback Play,I do not see them making the title game, even as good as the defense is. Too many inconsistencies at the QB position is a recipe for trouble. Turnovers and penalties are a huge problem with this offense. The Defense IS as advertised, but if the offense is gonna give up short fields, anybody can be scored on.

The Springers open the fall AND their NEW STADIUM vs NC power,Vance. With all the departures from THIS team,I’m not real confident with that game. Now,HSHS will return 6+ power 5 offered kids, but replacing the top level talent they lose, can’t give me a positive vibe. A backup Sophomore LB received an offer from Boston College just yesterday. Tomorrow hopefully starts the journey toward this year’s title. Next season,HSHS gets back to their “normal” schedule. Many of their “district teams” are still refusing to play HSHS. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Vance is likely to be top-notch. They get a lot of transfers. Coach Ferebee has a long history of finding them. When he left a very good Lakeland Team for Indian River, he brought over 3-4 of their top players, grabbed a couple from I.C. Norcom & even a few from Smith who were very good players. The result of that team was their first win vs the Tigers in 20 yrs. That team got beat by HSHS.

Reading around in the NC chat forum, it sounds like he knows the game down there where transfers are prolific & I believe they won the NC State title in 2019!
