Using EPJr's proposed class breakdown (basically dividing # of competing schools (315) by 5 Classes = ~63 schools per Class) would work out this way using the ADM figures from March '18. This is just for kicks. If they did go to 5 Classes I'm sure things would look differently. For kicks tell me the 8 teams you think would make it from your Region.

No prob - I've had a spreadsheet of the four and five classification proposals dating back to January that were on the table to be discussed before COVID-19 outbreak (and still may be discussed)... I'm not really sure on what the status of it all is at the moment.

Me personally - I think 4 classifications would be best. But ultimately my hunch is they'll go to 5 classifications when/if they make any adjustments.

With new schools opening up, a lot of the kids are being spread out, which lowers the numbers in each school

Basketball and other sports only had 1 champion. Good ole days

Maybe the reference is to the really old days, prior to the introduction of divisions in 1986. Recall that from 1970 to 1985, there were only three state champions yearly in football - one each in AAA, AA, and A.

Personally, four classifications has always seemed like the best solution to me. Football, with its dependence on large numbers and its high rate of attrition due to injuries, could somewhat justify six divisions. However, IMHO none of the arguments for that number really flew for any other sport. A lot of schools with lower ADMs in their classifications competed just fine. As one example, tiny Council High, at the time probably one of the five or six smallest schools in the state, won the whole ball of wax in A boys basketball in 2001. And, lest anyone think the Cobras were a one year fluke, they were runners-up the year before. By golly, if Council could do it in a revenue sport, anyone could do it!

If we scoured the VHSL record book, we could probably find an abundance of examples of schools with enrollments in the bottom twenty percent of their classifications winning state championships, across the spectrum of all boys and girls sports, in the pre-divisional days.

Not sure, but there is anew proposal as Cody Elliott mentioned in the tweet. I have a copy of that rough draft from the ad hoc committee and I'll be running a story on it here hopefully soon on our front page.
