LIVE 6A Championship Blog - Oscar Smith (13-1) vs. Westfield (12-2)

Tell you what - this Oscar Smith team is certainly digging deep, with the deck stacked against them trailing 21-7 at one point in the fourth quarter against the defending State Champs. Major credit to Bill Dee, his staff and players.

Deangelo White gains 6. Khalik Perry finds his way forwards to the 2-yard line of Westfield. Final time-out used with 29.6 seconds to go. Westfield clinging to a 21-13 lead.

My heart is pounding (and I'm not even playing... can only imagine how these two teams feel!) as Westfield calls time-out before the two-point conversion try for Oscar Smith with the Tigers looking to send this game to overtime. A Westfield stop and the Bulldogs will repeat as State Champs.

Here. We. Go.

Well, these two programs played a triple-overtime classic a year ago with Westfield edging Oscar Smith 49-42 in 2015 for the 6A title.

Why not go to OT again this year?

Overtime - Oscar Smith 21, Westfield 21

We've got our second barn-burner today at Hampton University.

Coach Bill Dee trying to go to 5-0 in state title games (he was 4-0 at Phoebus) and bring Oscar Smith its third State Championship in school history.

Meanwhile, Westfield is looking to avoid the heart-break and earn their third state title in program history. How will Kyle Simmons' Bulldogs re-group? They have been here before, though and nothing seems to phase them.

Oscar Smith will go on offense to begin the OT.

Nathanel Chung gains 3 up the middle on the first Westfield play from scrimmage in OT. Bulldogs run it again and they don't get much as he's stacked up in the middle by the interior of the d-line. Kyle Thomas among those in on the stop.

3rd & Goal from the 6. TD catch by Nolan Cockrill on the pass from Rehman Johnson. Bulldogs can send it to a second OT with a successful PAT.

Brian Delaney makes the PAT.

Going to 2nd OT - Westfield 28, Oscar Smith 28.

Westfield ball to start the 2nd OT.

Pass by Westfield is batted down. Oscar Smith's Troy Mott with the deflection. Play-action fake, under pressure, Rehman Johnson's pass is incomplete. 3rd & 10 coming for the Bulldogs.

Deangelo White gains 4. 2nd & Goal from the Westfield 6. Fumble on the exchange from center, but Tigers maintain possession.

It'll actually be 2nd & Goal at the Westfield 11-yard line for Oscar Smith after illegal procedure penalty.

Fumble on the toss to Deangelo White, but fortunately for him and the Tigers they maintain possession.

3rd & Goal now at the 12-yard line of Westfield.

Mitchell escapes and runs out of bounds at the Westfield 3-yard line. 4th & Goal... and the ballgame.

FINAL in 2OT's - Westfield 34, Oscar Smith 28.

The Westfield defense comes up with the stop on 4th & Goal from the Tigers 3 on a run play up the middle. The Bulldogs win another classic with the Tigers in what has produced two tremendously exciting, nail-biting football games.

Two outstanding programs producing yet another classic.

Westfield repeats as State Champs. More to come later including final numbers.

What State Championship Saturday we had here at Hampton University. Following up the five fourth quarter touchdowns, back-and-forth tussle between Highland Springs and Stone Bridge that the Springers won 35-29 on a go-ahead score with 26 seconds to go, Westfield and Oscar Smith gave the fans more than their money's worth.

Oscar Smith rallied from 21-7 down in the fourth quarter to tie the game, even converting a crucial two-point conversion with 7 seconds to play in regulation. The Tigers would go ahead 28-21 in OT, but Westfield responded with a pair of third down TD passes in the OT's as well as an enormous 4th & Goal stand from their usually stout defense.
