Greetings from Virginia Beach and Ocean Lakes High School on this cool evening for football - 20 days before Halloween. It's a matchup of reigning region title winners as the Ocean Lakes Dolphins (5-1) out of Region 6A play host to the visiting Maury Commodores (5-0) from Norfolk and Region 5A.

We'll have updates here all night long and via Twitter @hatfieldsports

Stay tuned!

Ocean Lakes enters....

It is worth noting that Coach Joe Jones tells me that standout junior WR/DB Myles Alston will not be uniform tonight due to a foot injury. They hope to have him back next week for their Beach District tilt with Salem.

Maury was on the move after a 17-yard kickoff return from Dashaun Peele (Navy commit), couple of 5-yard completions by Eric Gibson, but then the drive stalls.

Ocean Lakes giving the home fans plenty to cheer about in the early going, showing they are clearly no pushover.

Varner is a real game-changer up front for that Maury defensive line, able to line up at d-end or d-tackle. The future AAC player on Saturdays is going to be a tough guy to block all night for the Dolphins.

The Ocean Lakes run defense had stuffed Beasley on three straight plays, so Commodores Coach Dyrri McCain decides to give it to Dajon 'Dae Dae' Evans and it results in a TD. Luca Weber makes the PAT.

Ocean Lakes doesn't want to go to the air much tonight, especially without their top receiving playmaker Myles Alston. Maury strikes again with an INT and they have excellent field position to score in a hurry.

Maury is starting to get its offense clicking. They have used KeAndre Lambert, the 4-Star WR headed to Penn State, in some QB packages, running option along with RB C.J. Beasley (Va. Tech commit). How will Ocean Lakes adjust defensively? Coach Joe Jones and his veteran DC Chris Ramey know they have to keep them from turning this into a track meet.

Ocean Lakes is living on the edge... but in the midst of a nice drive and doing so with starting lineman Chad Waltman (#65) hobbling off...

The Dolphins are anchored up front by James Madison commit Tyler Stephens, lined up at left tackle tonight.

Even though Ocean Lakes didn't score, the positive was they flipped position and kept the high-octane Maury offense averaging nearly 50 points per game from getting on the scoreboard.

Let's see if the Commodores can add to their lead with the two-minute drill before the break...

The Ocean Lakes defense tackles very well on the screen to Khamran Laborn from QB Eric Gibson. A penalty on another screen - to C.J. Beasley - puts Maury in a 2nd & long, then 3rd & long following an incomplete pass.

Gibson runs for 4.

Ocean Lakes gets the ball back at their own 38 with 53 seconds till intermission.

Some numbers at the break...

HALF:

Maury 14:

Eric Gibson - 6-8 for 29Yds; 1Car. 6Yds.
C.J. Beasley - 9Car. 32Yds. TD; 1Rec. 2Yds.
Khamran Laborn - 3Rec. 14Yds.
KeAndre Lambert - 1Rec. 8Yds.
Ty Granger - 1Rec. 5Yds; INT
Dajon 'Dae Dae' Evans - 1Car. 2Yds. TD; 6 Tackles (3 Solo), TFL
Demetrius 'D.J.' Johnson - 8 Tackles (3 Solo)
Darian Varner - 6 Tackles (3 Solo), Sack, INT

Commodores - 20 plays for 75 total yards (6-8 for 29 pass yards; 12 rushes for 46 yards); 0 turnovers; 2 penalties for 13 yards

Ocean Lakes 6:

Josh Brown - 3-5 for 52Yds. 0-2 TD/Int. ratio; 9Car. 21Yds.
Kai Hodge - 8Car. 41Yds.
Devon Allen - 8Car. 20Yds.
Dominic Martini - 2Rec. 23Yds.
Naquan Brown - 1Rec. 29Yds; 2 Tackles
David Roulley - 6 Tackles (3 Solo)
Dawson Cox - 4 Tackles, 0.5TFL

Dolphins - 31 plays for 139 total yards (3-5 for 52 pass yards, 2 intercepts; 26 rushes for 87 yards) ; 2 turnovers; 2 penalties for 6 yards

It's Ocean Lakes ball to begin the 2nd half (remember, they tried the onside kick and it worked to begin the game).

But not the way they Dolphins wanted to start the 3rd period - a 3 & out. It concluded with a pass batted down on 3rd & 10. The series began though with QB Josh Brown losing 4 yards as Demetrius Johnson and Dajon 'Dae Dae' Evans were there to bring him down for a loss.

Not enough has been said about this Maury defense with Evans and Johnson playing superb tonight. Coach Dyrri McCain and DC Mike Privott - a former standout LB at Lake Taylor - have to like what they are seeing from their defense with the offense not being on the field that long.

Maury's first possession of he 2nd half had the Commodores on the move with C.J. Beasley getting in a groove in the run game. However, a holding puts them with 1st & 23.

But the Commodores get an 11-yard completion to Ty Granger, plus QB Eric Gibson shows some wheels with a 10-yard scramble.

Maury is looking at a 1st & 10 from the 16-yard line of Ocean Lakes, in the midst of a 9-play drive.

A real dig deep type of drive for Maury, which used Beasley on some direct snaps and even had Lambert at QB take snaps when it wasn't Eric Gibson. Though the offensive line got penalized for a couple of holding calls, they held tough and didn't crumble.

The only real impact play for the Ocean Lakes defense came on a quick screen to Khamran Laborn when defender Naquan Brown - who mossed on a defender earlier in the game and is a 4-star recruit at d-end for the Class of 2021 - sent him backwards.

Ocean Lakes has gotten a taste of its own medicine to an extent as Maury is playing smash-mouth football and doing it through the slippery running of Hokies commit C.J. Beasley. He's slipped out of numerous tackles and keeps the legs churning, now over 100 yards on the night.

After the great burst from Ocean Lakes out of the gate, Maury has settled and played a very impressive game thus far. They've held their composure and eliminated some of the unsportsmanlike penalties that they had committed in recent weeks as well.

Hard to explain how impressed I've been with C.J. Beasley tonight. Many posed the question who the best running back in the '757' was to begin this season - with Beasley as a candidate, Salem's Kaelon Black, the Phoebus duo of Jaylen White and Anthony Turner, Malik Newton from Lake Taylor, Booker T. Washington's Rodney Hammond, etc. - and tonight this young fella is certainly making his case.

Your final numbers from this contest as Maury moves to 6-0 overall and Ocean Lakes drops to 5-2. The Dolphins take on unbeaten Salem of Virginia Beach next week, while the Commodores put their unblemished record on the line against Wilson out of Portsmouth.

Of note - Maury had 25 plays for 268 total yards in the second half. By comparison, Ocean Lakes had 26 plays net a mere 29 yards over the game's final two quarters of action...
