In a mostly back and forth game until Westfield managed to build a 10 point lead early in the fourth quarter, Madison managed to overcome that deficit in the final 10 minutes of the game to come away with a 28-24 victory over Westfield.

WF received the opening KO and marched 73 yards to open the scoring with a Duda 3 yard run at the 6:36 mark of the first quarter (Nicklas XP) to take a 7-0 lead. MAD then started at their own 16 yard line, using a 38 yard pass from Cael Yates to Roman to reach the WF 44 yard line. MAD's Knicely later took a pitch around the right side and scored on a 24 yard run to tie it at 7-7 (Pfelghardt XP) with 2:54 to play in the first quarter. WF started their next drive on their 31 yard line and reached midfield where they faced 4th and 1, but instead of going for it elected to punt. The punt pinned MAD at their own 6 yard line. MAD went three and out and a short punt gave WF great field position on the MAD 31 yard line. After only gaining a yard on three plays WF faced a 4th and 9. On this play Jenks tossed the ball to Johnson on a reverse to gain 24 yards to the MAD 6 yard line. WF then had a three yard run, a run for a one yard loss, and an INC pass and they were facing 4th and goal from the 4 yard line. WF elected to kick a 21 yard FG and Nicklas's kick was good to put WF back in front, 10-7, with 6:42 remaining in the half. MAD's next drive gained 48 yards with the key play being a Cael Yates to Cord Yates 32 yard pass play to reach the WF 32 yard line. Facing a 4th and 4 at the WF 26 yard line MAD went for it but the play was stopped short and WF took over on their own 25 yard line. Failing to move the ball WF punted the ball back to MAD at the MAD 25 but the half ran out before MAD could get into scoring range.

MAD took the second half KO at their 37 yard line and the Yates brothers soon linked up again, this time with a beautiful over the shoulder catch for 53 yards to the WF 3 yard line. Knicely then scored from two yards out and after the Pfelghardt XP MAD was back in front, 14-10, with 8:17 remaining in the third quarter. WF then put together a 65 yard drive to score on a Jenks 1 yard run to take back the lead, 17-14 (Nicklas XP) with 3:04 remaining in the 3rd quarter. MAD's Knicely returned the KO 39 yards to the MAD 44 yard line and MAD was looking to cut into the lead. However, facing another 4th down (4th and 2) at the WF 32 yard line the WF defense again held and the turnover on downs gave WF the ball at their own 32 yard line. WF then put together another scoring drive and scored on a Jenks rollout pass to Johnson from 19 yards out to extend the WF lead to 24-10 (Nicklas XP) with 10:42 remaining in the game. Needing two scores MAD abandoned the running game and went to a passing offense and it paid off when they quickly went 90 yards and scored on a one yard Cael Yates run to cut the lead to 24-21 (Pfelghardt XP) with 4:20 to play. WF went to work from their own 26 yard line but only gained one first down, having to punt the ball back to MAD with about 1:29 remaining. MAD was now 70 yards from the end zone and needed at least a FG to tie. Going right back to the passing game, they advanced into WF territory before a scrambling Cael Yates found his brother Cord who got to the visitor's sideline with the pass at about the WF 15 yard line. Breaking four tackles, Yates scored with 39 seconds left to give MAD a 28-24 lead (Pfelghardt XP). WF received the MAD KO at their own 21 yard line and with very little time. WF managed to advance to the MAD 34 yard line where, with 4 seconds on the clock, there was time for one more play. WF's Jenks rolled out to his left and threw a deep pass to the back of the end zone intended for Johnson who was closely covered by Knicely who knocked the pass down as time expired.

@falcettik …great summary as usual, and a really great back and forth game. Playoffs are going to be interesting this year.

Why does the Westfield defense continue to use only three linemen at line of scrimmage instead of four or five linemen used by most teams?

That I cannot answer. I don't know a whole lot about the Xs and Os.

I think it is more a down and distance sort of thing... they did the same thing tonite vs. Centreville, passing downs more in a 3-4. 1st down or shorter to make the line to gain a 4-3. Westfield tonite also had some plays with 3 down linemen, then overloaded one side with a one or two linebacker blitz. I think the 3-4 helped them against Madison running game, since they could cover laterally better, for the most part.

Madison, on the other hand, mostly stays in their base 4-3, since their strength is pressure up front. They will occasionally swap individual LBs/DBs based on speed for a nickel package.
