Mike Smith, Hampton coach, told he can't coach until October 1

I am not a fan of Hampton football, but this decision reeks of inappropriateness. At best, it sounds ambitious, at worst, a vendetta.
Simple question, if Smith functions as a volunteer assistant, how could they stop him from coaching?
I would venture to say that NO ONE in the lower 48 would buy into Coach Smith acting as a "volunteer".
There's a better chance of Congress coming together as one, for the good of us all....jussayin'.
I know the VRS has some really quirky retirement rules. Just speaking to friends of my wife who have retired....the rules of engagement are a bit limiting in nature. Now a bus driver can retire from their local school district on Friday and can turn around on Monday and start driving as a state contractor and never change their bus route...and make more money in some instances. Go figure.
If he chooses to not receive compensation, why can't he be considered a volunteer?
I know, that if the waiting period rule exist, then that's the way it is. But why a rule like that in the first place? If I retire today, it's nobody's business what I do tomorrow.

except the folks who paying you in your retirement
it depends on the stipulation attached to getting your money.
some teachers in a county near me have to agree to sub and certain number of hours as part of them getting their money
Don't get me wrong, the rules are the rules. I just think the VRS needs to re-consider this particular requirement.
I believe what you are speaking of, is that there is a financial incentive for retiring school teachers under VRS, to agree to work "x" hours per year. It's not mandatory, but the financial penalty is fairly significant. (BTW, it used to be they were required to work 10 days a year.) (Not sure about that nowadays.)
