It's Magna Vista ball to start and the Warriors have it at their own 33-yard line. A great tackle made by Tyler Kaplan on the return. Magna Vista moves the chains with a completion of 11 yards to George Ramey, one of their captains who is listed at 6-foot-3.

But the Warriors' drive stalls when Lafayette's Brandon Villanueva-Pernell - known as 'BVP' - makes a tackle on 4th & 2 to keep Magna Vista star back Jacqez Hairston short of the first down.

So Lafayette takes over at its own 46 with 9:49 to go in the first quarter, still scoreless.

Lafayette is putting together a really solid drive on its first possession. Unlike Magna Vista, the Rams convert their first try on 4th down as QB Cheyton Pine - playing the position for the injured Brendan McGinty - sneaks ahead for a 2-yard gain down to the Magna Vista 29-yard line. Magna Vista has gotten good stops against the run to limit big runs. Credit those stops to sophomore LB Jason Scales and junior LB Traveon Brunson.

Fortunately for the Rams, those hits aren't coming at the line, but more on the '2nd level' of the defense. A key catch made by Tyreke Graham and Joey Kraegenbrink is breaking off chunks to put the Rams at the 7-yard line of Magna Vista on 3rd down.

On 3rd & 2 at the 7 of Magna Vista - it's fullback John Douglass with the TD run for the Rams. PAT is good.

3:31 left 1stQ - Lafayette 7, Magna Vista 0

Coach Andy Linn has to be pleased with the push his offensive line gave his backs/running game on that opening series. Magna Vista made fairly crisp tackles, but they have to be able to do a better job up front for the Rams.

***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** - End 1stQ: Lafayette 7, Magna Vista 0

Following the Lafayette touchdown, the Warriors of Magna Vista come up with a crucial third down conversion in their efforts to help tilt field position. It's a slant pass from QB Shoalin McGuire to George Ramey for a gain of 11 to their own 47-yard line. That's the second catch by Ramey to move the chains this afternoon.

However, on 3rd & 2 from the 45-yard line of Lafayette, it's the Rams making a critical stop as Cheyton Pine - the starting quarterback - comes through with a sack for a loss of 14. Magna Vista will punt it away and that takes us to the end of the opening quarter.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** - 9:10 2ndQ: Lafayette 7, Magna Vista 6

What a back-and-forth swing we have here at Arthur L. Williams Stadium at Liberty University in this 3A State Championship.

To star the 2nd quarter, Lafayette goes 3-and-out offensively. However, the Rams get a fumble recovery on the punt return from senior Trey Neville.

Shortly thereafter, the Rams turn the ball over with sophomore LB Jason Scales forcing a fumble on a hit on QB Cheyton Pine, recovered by senior Ray Witcher. Magna Vista takes over at the 10:54 mark of the 2nd quarter and go marching from their own 35-yard line.

The 'big play' on that drive for the Warriors is a 33-yard strike from QB Shoalin McGuire to wideout T'Mahdae Penn, one of their main playmakers. They tested the Lafayette secondary, particularly Joey Kraegenbrink, a couple times earlier and this time they have success with the deep ball. A gritty five-yard run from McGuire on 3rd & 5 extends the drive.

Following McGuire's conversion, it is his pass for 23 yards to Penn for a touchdown. Penn was very wide open on the play.

The extra point, however, is blocked partially by Rams senior linebacker Derrick Harris.

9:10 left 2ndQ - Lafayette 7, Magna Vista 6

Special note - Traveon Redd, junior for Magna Vista, is really flying around out here on defense. Could be a difference maker before this game is done.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** - 2:33 2ndQ: Lafayette 7, Magna Vista 6

Up 7-6, Lafayette gets the ball back and starts to move the ball down the field pretty effectively, although a double handoff doesn't get them anywhere. Tra Redd and Jason Scales are doing a really solid job against the run for the Warriors.

Facing 3rd-and-7 from the 50, QB Cheyton Pine masterfully looks off the safety and hits Brandon Villanueva-Pernell for a gain of 10 yards on the comeback route. BVP, much like Penn for Magna Vista, is a weapon that can break a long gain at any time.

Lafayette is unable to get a second third down conversion on this series as it's junior DB Devin Johnston getting to Pine on the stop for no gain. Pine on the keeper tried to go outside rather than cut it inside when he got to the edge, and as a result, it means the Rams will punt on fourth down.

Magna Vista takes over at its own 16-yard line with 4:02 left to go before half-time. Against a Lafayette defense with no deep safety helping, playing man-to-man Cover 1, Magna Vista is looking to test them over the top again. They don't get the connection. BVP comes up with a key tackle on third down for the Rams.

So the Warriors will punt and Redd's kick is not a good one - a minus-2-yard boot. Lafayette takes over at the 23-yard line of Magna Vista. A golden opportunity there.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** - HALF: Lafayette 7, Magna Vista 6

A major missed opportunity for Lafayette and Magna Vista dodges a major bullet. The Rams get the ball at the Magna Vista 23 after a minus 2-yard punt, but come up empty with no points no the series. Little surprised they decided to throw it on three straight plays - 2nd & 6, 3rd & 6 and 4th & 6.

Devin Johnston made a superb pass breakup on a tricky throw over the middle. He's got 9INT's on the year, 2 for TD's, and picked off a pass in 7 or 8 straight games. The Rams drop the next two passes, both a tad off the mark, but Pine has been steady in his first start at QB for the injured Brendan McGinty (still playing despite the cast, just not at QB).

Magna Vista tries to get something going before the half comes to a close as T'Mahdae Penn reels in a Shoalin McGuire pass for 19 yards. The Warriors are stick in neutral after that as the Lafayette defense is tackling really well at all three levels. McGuire has had a couple passes a smidge off, but part of it can be attributed to the Rams starting to mount a pass rush before the break.

Lafayette runs the clock out to end the half with a one-point advantage.

One key injury note - - LB Matt Hummel (8 sacks on the year, Colonial Rivers Conference Defensive Player of the Year) was a bit dinged up during that first half of play... my colleague Rod Johnson believes it's just a tweak to the lower leg, not for sure. We'll update you if we hear anything new...

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** 6:26 3rdQ: Lafayette 7, Magna Vista 6

The 3rd quarter starts with back-to-back three-and-outs, including a pass on 3rd down where Lafayette QB Cheyton Pine overthrew a potential open receiver.

Magna Vista gains just 9 yards on its opening series of the second half, deciding to punt on 4th & 1 from its own 25.

On their second possession, Lafayette moves the ball a bit with runs from Joey Kraegenbrink and John Douglass moving the chains, but Traveon Brunson - who has been all over the field - buckles down with a stuff. Lafayette doesn't move it any more once they get to the 40 of Magna Vista and punt it away.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** 3:15 3rdQ: Magna Vista 12, Lafayette 7

Magna Vista gets the burst they needed - an 83-yard touchdown run from Jacqez Hairston, their junior star ball carrier, who is sprung free on a killer block from T'Mahdae Penn.

The two-point pass is broken up by Lafayette's Brendan McGinty, making his presence felt on defense while not playing on offense due to the injury on his throwing hand.

6:13 left 2ndQ - Magna Vista 12, Lafayette 7

Joey Kraegenbrink with a 29-yard kick return for the Rams puts them at the Magna Vista 41-yard line. A 2-yard run by John Douglass makes it 4th & 1, and Coach Andy Linn has a bold play call by deciding to throw. It works out with QB Cheyton Pine hitting Brandon Villanueva-Pernell for a gain of 4.

The drive would stall as Jason Scales comes free on a back-side blitz to pressure Pine for an incomplete pass. Penalties back the Rams up as well.

On 3rd & 26 from their own 44-yard line, Lafayette drops back to throw and the pass put into double coverage is picked off by DB Devin Johnston. That is Johnston's 10th INT of the year and he now has a pick in 8 straight games.

Warriors take over with a 12-7 lead at their own 11-yard line with 2:48 left in this 3rd quarter. Momentum clearly on the side of Lafayette as the Rams are unable to sustain much offensively.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** End 3rdQ: Magna Vista 12, Lafayette 7

Magna Vista is putting together one of its finest drives of the afternoon, starting at their own 11-yard line and concluding the third quarter at the Lafayette 19-yard line. In a span of about six or seven plays, they've gashed a Rams defense that has been stingy all year long with QB Shoalin McGuire being the maestro in their offense, taking off 29 yards to the 50 after a couple of pass plays, nearly one picked off by Brandon Villanueva-Pernell.

Jacqez Hairston follwos it up with an 11-yard gain, and then it's McGuire on the keep for 15, inching closer to the red zone.

End 3rdQ - Magna Vista 12, Lafayette 7

This speed option for Magna Vista is giving Lafayette issues. McGuire is doing a really fine job of knowing when to keep, pitch it, and they are mixing in Hairston well in their attack. A touchdown for the Warriors this series could make Lafayette one-dimensional, depending on the pass, in this final period.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** 10:45 4thQ: Magna Vista 18, Lafayette 7

QB Shoalin McGuire with a 4-yard touchdown run for Magna Vista caps a 12-play, 89-yard run. The two-point conversion pass play is no good. Nonetheless, the Warriors - with a boatload of underclassmen playing major roles today - have a double-digit lead on Lafayette. It's the biggest deficit faced all year for a Rams team that has won every time out by 19 points.

11:11 left 4thQ - Magna Vista 18, Lafayette 7

Remember, coming into today the Rams had not given up a touchdown in the first three quarters in any of the last three games. They gave up 2 (and nearly 3) in those 3 quarters of play. The Warriors in space are looking impressive with their running game, plus have the threats on the outside and a QB that is pretty accurate (12 of 16 for 133 yards through the air so far) to keep the defense off balance.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** 9:45 4thQ: Magna Vista 18, Lafayette 13

Lafayette shows their Championship poise and mettle, not going away quietly. Needing to go to the air with the running game being snuffed out by Magna Vista, the Rams do just that as QB Cheyton Pine finds Brandon Villanueva-Pernell for a completion. BVP shows some nifty running after the catch for a gain of 24.

On the very next play, it's Pine to Tyreke Graham for a 46-yard touchdown pass on a beautifully thrown pass. Graham makes the juggling catch and is able to hold on for the score. The two-point pass is picked off by Magna Vista.

10:37 left to play - Magna Vista 18, Lafayette 13

Are the Rams back in it or will the Warriors put together another scoring drive on the defense to put it out of reach? This next series might determine who walks out of here in the State Championship... things are getting VERY interesting after a sluggish first half to a degree for both teams.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** 6:13 4thQ: Magna Vista 25, Lafayette 13

In a game that was a defensive struggle, the offense has picked up considerably for both sides. Magna Vista moves the chains twice on third down because of offsides penalties from Lafayette. A beautiful pass from Shoalin McGuire, rolling to his right and hitting Trey Clark for 11 as he cuts back to his left.

The Warriors take advantage of the two Lafayette miscues with Jacqez Hairston breaking off a tremendous 48-yard touchdown run, using his cut-back ability and burst to find the end zone.

6:13 to play - Magna Vista 25, Lafayette 13

Lafayette may be running out of time in this one. Magna Vista can smell its first ever State Championship, needing just one more defensive stop to finish the deal.

Re: ***STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** 3:50 4thQ: Magna Vista 25, Lafayette 19

Things are getting crazy here at Liberty as Lafayette has scored again to get closer. On 3rd-and-3 from the Magna Vista 39-yard line, Andy Linn takes out another trick in his bag with wing-back Caleb Kraegenbrink firing a 33-yard pass to Trey Neville, who finds a way to bring it in after it is tipped.

John Douglass finishes off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run, but the PAT is no good.

3:50 left - Magna Vista 25, Lafayette 19

Magna Vista is looking at a 3rd-and-7 from their own 28-yard line after key stops by Coleman Goad and D'Andre Thompson of Lafayette. Rams know if they can get a stop we might have a wild finish awaiting us here at Arthur L. Williams Stadium at Liberty. The inside runs and counters are starting to get bottled up by the Rams better than they were earlier.

**STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BLOG*** FINAL - Magna Vista 25, Lafayette 19

While Magna Vista moves the chains on a 23-yard catch by Rodarius Gravely (his first snag of the day) vs. single coverage from QB Shoalin McGuire, the Warriors have to punt after key stops from Deacon Smith and Liam Walters of Lafayette. Smith missed much of the season with a collarbone injury.

However, the Warriors sense a Championship celebration when Traveon Brunson jars the ball loose on a quarterback keeper by Lafayette's Cheyton Pine. Coming out of the pile with the pigskin is Abrian Pena, junior d-lineman for Magna Vista.

Magna Vista has it 2nd & 9 now at the Lafayette 43-yard line with the Rams having no time-outs remaining. That allows them to run out the clock and capture their first ever State Championship, capping a 14-1 campaign for Joe Favero's squad.
