VHSL Schools Name Changes in 2021

Where's the line? I know of hundreds if not thousands of schools/buildings/streets that are named after a known habitual adulterer. Is that acceptable? Is naming these things after someone who ruined a lot of relationships/families not bad enough?
the line is drawn by the folk that go to the schools, that taxes pay for the schools, that have children in the schools. It is time out for fleeing to the burbs and leaving your icons for somebody else to maintain.

The funny thing is the original post was just informative. Others made it political. No shade at you @bceagle47 but I just find that funny. The same people that want politics off the board are the ones who made this thread that way.
that is the new cry "POLITICS" for anything that don't personally affect me.

I don't get it. Not sure why none of these school names were brought up as a problem in the 80's/90's/00's.

you haven't seen anything yet, according to the Census Bureau by 2030 the nonwhite population will be over 51% of the general population.

Mostly hispanic. They get to be lumped in with us white devils as well I guess. I know my lovely hispanic wife takes a lot of racism in her line of work and that racism isnt from whitey.

actually the name now is Latinx and that is not a race some are white and some are black and some are brown. Also included in the brown are a growing group of mixture race folk.

Ah yes, we need to divide each other up even more. I forgot about that socialist talking point.

Whatever. Point stands, most of these immigrants are hispanic. And most will get lumped in with whitey, which is great, welcome to the club folks.

Garbage post. Lee was not a "man of his time". Let's dispel this crap logic right now: millions of people in the 1860s were against the notion of owning other people both in the US and across the world. The fact that trash garbage from the South thought otherwise doesn't make them "men of their time". Our ancestors weren't so stupid as to think slavery was just how things worked back then, plenty of them knew it was wrong and we literally, not figuratively, went to war over stopping it.

The fact that Lee lived the rest of his life in opposition of racial equality and the ability for blacks to even vote speaks to his character or lack thereof and your excuses of his actions speak to where you stand on the matter of that war.

Isn't it weird that the US was bringing up the rear on abolishing slavery and they needed a war costing millions of lives to figure out it was a bad thing? It's sad and pathetic that the rest of the modern world at that time not only beat America to the punch but they managed to do so without shedding blood.

I feel like you or someone else ITT is two inches from "muh states rights" argument for the war, I hope to see it.
We tend to miss some of the other reasons the Civil War was fought. When we have discussions about this war it's always about slavery. A side note to the war was the fact that none of the southern states voted for Lincoln. The South felt like they did not have a voice. It went well beyond just slavery.

This is where this conversation will have its greatest impact. This is where people will be open-minded to different ideas. Here on this HS sports message board. Thank goodness we’re brave enough to have these honest and genuine conversations here.

Schools changing their mascot from Indians to something is no surprise. William & Mary did it, Blacksburg did it, etc. Gar-Field will be unique as they will be the only Red Wolves in VHSL.

There’s quite a few “Indians” mascots still around. Powhatan HS, Stafford HS. I bet there are others.
There were seven prior to Gar-Field changing to the Red Wolves. The six remaining schools are:
Powhatan
Stafford
Rural Retreat
Northumberland
Fort Defiance
Southampton

The formerly Stonewall-Jackson High School in Quicksburg is now the Mountain View High School - Home of the Generals.

All schools should either be called by the name of the town or neighborhood or do what they do in New York and call the high school PS #23. No Donald Trump High School or Barack Obama High School bs… Our country is in a bad shape. Can’t make everyone happy so make everything fair to everyone.
What do you do when there is more than one high school in the same "neighborhood" (i.e. John Marshall and Henrico High)? Also, the high schools in New York are not numbered. Most are named after people, mainly presidents. The elementary and middle schools are numbered but even some of them have names as well. Former P.S. 069 Jackson Heights School and I.S. 230 student myself!

They are very close by but aren’t in the same neighborhood. John Marshall pulls from the Northside of Richmond City and Henrico is more or less the start of Eastern Henrico County. They don’t like one another nor have anything but their school’s proximity in common. Now I could give a crap if they named a school 3puttcharlie High, I just get tired of everything being politically correct and this cancel culture that has taken over. Feels like you can’t make anybody happy anymore. You and I are both black male educators and I’m sure we could both give at minimum 15 things that would benefit our kids than a school’s name change.

depends on the name.
kids in Hanover County are very happy not representing Lee-Davis anymore.

actually they are building a new high school to be finished in 2022.

And when Branch gets through with that, they'll head back west and help kill off the Hurley Rebels, as Buchanan County will consol. them w/ Twin Valley & Grungy in '24 or '25. The new bldg. will put a h.s. BACK in the county seat after 60 years, but will likely have a 'neutral' name. My guesses are Southern Gap Elks or Southern View Elks (since they'll be on new Rt. 121 between other consolidated 'views'... Ridgeview [Clintwood/Haysi/Ervinton] and River View (Iaeger/Big Creek - Bradshaw, WV)

I personally view Warriors and Chiefs differently that Indians. A warrior is a brave or experienced soldier or fighter while a chief is a leader or ruler of a people or clan. So either name can be used for any time of group, not just Indians or Native Americans. Most Native Americans prefer to be called Native or Indigenous instead of Indians (especially since Columbus called them Indians because he thought he made it to the West Indies).

so where have you seen that - all the ones I have seen (particularly in VA) have been Indians. Henrico, Monacan Indian River, Kempsville, etc.

Columbus had no idea - he thought he was in India.

We historians have transitioned to referring to the indigenous peoples as American Indians and not Native Americans. Native constitutes where you were born and that would make about 300 million of us Native Americans. "Native Americans" aren't native to the Americas as they migrated from East Asia which also makes that term problematic.

well if you are going there - they migrated to Asia from Africa. the question is what do the people call themselves. Historians should finally be transitioning to that.

Oops Sorry Powhatan was named after the Powhatan people which Pocahontas was a part of her other name was Matoaca so those schools are I kinda like Florida State paying

The Southern Gap Elks - Go for like a Milwaukee Bucks theme (Hunter Green/Purple/Silver)?

Virginia school board poised to restore names of Confederate generals to schools

In 2020 the school board changed the names of Stonewall Jackson High School to Mountain View High School and Ashby-Lee Elementary School was renamed Honey Run Elementary School.

Now, under pressure from some parents -- and specifically some alumni of the schools -- the board is reconsidering the change.

According to one board member, the prior decision to make the change was suspicious and needs to be reviewed.

Should have been Mount Jackson high from whenever the school opened.

They were going to Name a building at the University of Washington for Pappy Boydton
And the Anti War folks in Seattle said no
Read his Bio and Also the Military Bases in the south that were named after Confederate Soldiers the reason this was done was it was the US government trying to appease the South as they were trying to get the country back together
Doesn’t make it right but it may help explain the thinking of the time it’s also hard in the present to know how people will be viewed in later years
Also New Jersey has a Malcolm X Shabbazz HS
But also Wake Forest has their Basketball Arena Named after Lawrence Joel a War Hero of Color
Read his Bio unbelievable American Hero
