Another great season of football has wrapped up and our last bit of information about the year comes in the form of the VirginiaPreps.com All-State teams.

Before we get to the announcement of the honorees, let's take a quick moment to review the standards that we've put into place around the teams that we name each season.

First, we limit ourselves to just twelve players on each side of the ball with four specialists and one coach of the year. We also pick just one player on each side of the ball to be our player of the year which forces us to make very difficult decisions. Last but not least, because we limit the team to a mere 28 total players and because we want to honor as many as possible, we will not name a player at more than one position.

On the defensive side of the ball, we name four defensive linemen, four linebackers, three defensive backs and one 'wildcard' position that we generically name 'athlete'.

Offensively, we name a quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, five offensive linemen and one 'wildcard' position that we generically name 'athlete'.

**Note that the All-Underclass Coach of the Year is selected from a pool of coaches in their first year with their respective program**

Michael Mabry from Buckingham should be on this list. He already has a scholarship offer from JMU.

Yeah, he is on the second team all-state.

Sorry, had a typo in there. Previously posted an earlier version of the team. My mistake.

Correct final team is up there now.

I'm not a Richlands fan, nor am I complaining at all. I went to about 6 of their games and I'm just wondering if you guys took the Holmes kid into account at all when picking the D lineman? One of the best I've ever seen. Also read on SWVA sports he led their team in solo tackles and had 12 sacks(most on the team) and also finished second in total tackles on the team. Once again I'm just curious not complaining or anything

Yeah, definitely considered him and was a tough one to exclude. Defensive tackle was one of those spots where it was kind of a lose-lose situation because there were so many who played well this season. Position was really stacked.

Okay, thanks! Just wanted to see what your guys thought process was on that position!

I can actually rock with this list! Only gripe would be Matt Page should've been 2nd team QB. Rest looks good.
Love yall put Graves on list at DB. He will be one of the top 3 football athletes in state next year (he is a sophomore). Probably gonna make a run at qb next year.
Super love yall gave Matthan Drew credit! He deserves 1st team as well at OL.
Glad yall observed Buster being 1st team WR instead of LB.
Phillip Fleshman got some credit as well. He will be #1 RB in state next year. WATCH WHAT IM TELLING YA!
Good job with doing some justice to the #VHSL list.

Would it be too hard to post stats with these to have factual data to back up selections? I know it's partially a popularity contest too but STATS would be nice to compare to. Thanks

Stats are a plus but it's based on what you see and game impacters. Receivers, QB's and RB's get more respect for stats. DLinemen, OLinemen and even linebackers are much harder to judge here. For example, great Junior Defensive linemen will be run away from, game planned for and double teamed their entire Senior year.

Stats are fine and helpful but when it comes to evaluating, the eye test rules.

So whomever voted/decided player s that made the list watched film on all these players?

The details of how VAPreps makes their selections have been been discussed "ad nauseum" on this board. No need to go over it again. But, in short, VAPreps does such a good job covering the teams that the vast majority of selections have actually been seen live by the staff. Both during the season and in the playoffs. There is plenty of discussion, debate and film, as required. Even before the season starts, they have the low down on teams from Coachs and other connections as illustrated by their pre-season top 10 (which end up being pretty damn accurate by the way). They have plenty of players on their watch list and sleepers turn up all season. If you've followed the season here, there are new stories everyday on players and game performances. They know their stuff and put out the most accurate All State team even though you'll find the majority of players on their list are also on the Coach's All State. Let's get real here too. Many of these kids are so much better than others playing that position, they're just a lock right out of the gate.

As you said there are teams that already have players selected. Seems the only players that get selected are from teams in swva that have had success in the past. Some teams still have players that are better than these kids selected. Someone said at one time this site is trying to bring recognition to swva teams. But only if your on a better team this seems biased. Really biased. If administrator should read this they can delete my profile. I'm done!

You didn't say anything wrong so I doubt you'll get banned or deleted.

I didn't say anything about teams. I said kids. Doesn't matter what team they're on. Now I must admit, if your team goes on a deep playoff run and you perform well there, it simply can't be helped that more folks are going to see you against the best opposition and coming out on top. Even you have to admit, there's something to be said for that. But others are also recognized. For example, Steven Moss from Chancellor HS got a full scholly to UVA and was All State his Senior year. His team went 1 - 9. Austin Clarke from Rockbridge County got a full scholly to VT and was All State his Senior year. His team didn't win a game. Your argument doesn't hold up.

VAPreps has no bias. If you've got the goods, you've got the goods. What you have is an argument about one player (un-named but obvious). Doesn't mean you're wrong but the odds of you being right are pretty long and probably not very objective nor experienced.

I have seen VA Preps at 7 on 7 tournaments as well. I remember one of them came to Liberty U to watch the games.

Please let this kid make it to an all state team. He has 2 years to do it. Wish yall the best. Chill out though. He is a dang sophomore. He will have his time.

Someone asks.for stats that no one can give. If I weren't a father of a player and I were just a fan I still would like to see the stats. But as a father knowing how hard his son works to.try and have himself deemed worthy of recognition. Info that would let him compare himself with the others so he can set a goal for himself. But to no avail he can get nothing. Nothing to compare to just hearsay from people who like to tell him they are better than him but cannot give him anything else. Yes stats can make a difference to an athlete trying to make himself better. Trying to achieve a goal he has set for himself. So as for trying to find out well tell me if I'm wrong but STATS do make a difference and the info should be there to compare. This will at least five him.something to compare himself to. If some one would be so kind as to find them my son and I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

If you pick up on patterns here jdphil you would notice that players on these state teams have successful TEAMS. But you promote the individual accolades of your son so heavily. What are you teaching him to value? Why would you take so much stake in such a subjective assessment of ones ability? You can try to bring stats into it and make it objective but that doesn't translate due to system or a need to pass. There were a lot of good receivers that I saw this year and your son was one of them. Let sleeping dogs lie. Let this motivate him to continue to grow. I wouldn't want my son to be on a team of recognition due to my griping about it anyway. Let his game and his character speak for itself.

You just aren't getting in man. Nobody has stats to give you. I would be willing to bet that 99% of the people on this page don't go to a game to write down stats, they go to watch the games. If these stats are SO IMPORTANT to you, try to find them for yourself. The only way that would be possible is to try to find the stats in newspapers or things like that. Since you have given every excuse in the book on why he didn't do even better, maybe the best thing that you can do is to recognize what people on here are trying to tell you instead of demeaning people because they don't have the answers you are looking for.

It doesn't matter what you think should be, it matters what is. When you have a football TEAM that isn't very good and the wins that the team does have is against inferior competition you are going to have your stats padded because someone has to get it, and if your child is as good as you say, well then he will be the one getting those numbers. But to come on here and blame the QB, the coach, everyone on this board who doesn't support your argument or will look up stats for you is a very good example of being biased toward the point. How about this, and answer truthfully. Would your son put up close to the same numbers if he were on a good football team with more available than just him? Are the stats that he put up conducive to his team winning? You were quick to point out the stats he had against Galax, well those stats ended in a 46-7 game. Not much of an impact.

Look at it this way with something not involving your son. If you take out the last game he played in the season when he got injured early, Josh McCown threw for an average of 294 yards per game. That would be good for 5th in the NFL. he also had a 3/1 TD to INT ratio. Man he surely should have been a Pro Bowler right? His teams record in those games. O wait that doesn't matter. The ONLY thing that matters is stats

Why don't you just go to MaxPreps, HUDL or an area newspaper to get those numbers yourself? It's what anyone else would have to do. Or do you just imagine there's a central depository where all those numbers are kept for every player who ever played HS Football? No one is going to do this digging for you.

Numbers for a WR, for example, are particularly deceptive. A spread team is going to pass a lot more than a Wing-T team. Lots more catches and TDs for the spread team. 40 receptions and 10 - 15 TDs would not be unusual. Makes a decent receiver seem pretty good because of the system. But the WR from Wing T Courtland, Nick Grant, whose CAREER numbers may not be 40 receptions and 15 TDs and not on anyone's All-State Team has a full ride to UVA. Chancellor had a similar player several years ago. His best season was 350 total yards and 7 TDs. Now plays for South Carolina. He wasn't an All-State receiver either. But BOTH were next level and the numbers didn't mean a hill of beans to the D1 Coachs that saw their film and watched them play. They got no recognition. They just got a free education.

Also, a player can set goals like TDs or receptions or tackles but what if they don't throw him the ball and what if the defender is so good, he is game planned for and run away from? Your goal is to find a number adequate enough to receive individual recognition. The goal should be to do the best you can to help the team. If you worry about yourself as an individual and the number you need to be recognized, you've become the antithesis of "team".

Thanks for the add and new to the site. From my deduction most of the players on the list came from schools that did or have had successful programs. The one guy seems to gripe about stats alot but I think he does have somewhat of a point. I don't have any sons but love watching high school ball. I also looked for stats on some of the players. I couldn't find out alot on the school sites.

Not all. Historically, that's a complete misconception. Grant it, successful schools get some more exposure. When you play the best, you get noticed a little more. Just can't be helped. But Plenty of All-State players have come from 0 - 10 and 1 - 9 teams.

Some schools publish their stats religiously but it's only about 50%, IMO. The accuracy, much like players size and weight on a roster, is almost always wrong. If you want stats, you'll have to have a direct connection with every Coach in an area or scrounge every local paper in the State. It's a lot of work and even then, you won't get everything.

Which is just one of the reasons All-State teams have little to do with stats.
