Volleyball- RAPP upsets Middlesex 3-2 in comeback thriller! NHS, Essex win!

Middlesex, who many predict to be the top Volleyball team in Region A, were upset 3-2 in a comeback thriller by Rappahannock (Raiders).

Middlesex won the 1st set in fairly dominating fashion. RHS took the next one, 25-23. Middlesex won the third easily and it did not look good for the Raiders at all.

Down 2-1, RAPP made big comebacks in the next two sets to win 25-23 and 15-13. Great crowd and wild and woolly on the edge of your seat action.

RAPP starts 3 seniors and 3 underclassmen (2 Freshman and a Sophomore).

Northumberland defeated West Point 3-0. Way to go Indians.

Essex defeated Surry 3-0. I understand Britney Berry has returned to coach the Lady Trojans. Awesome athlete and coach back in the day and has returned to coach at her alma mater Essex. Well done.

Wow, that's BIG time for Rapp vb, good for them. WP didn't look very good in their home opener as the score indicates. Lots of turmoil in WP over the summer in VB and FB. Makes you wonder if there is an issue in the athletic dept.?

Wow, that's BIG time for Rapp vb, good for them. WP didn't look very good in their home opener as the score indicates. Lots of turmoil in WP over the summer in VB and FB. Makes you wonder if there is an issue in the athletic dept.?

Ron Metzger used to have WP as an annual top team in the old consolidated Group A. Good memories from my time around those teams. No clue about the current issues though. That said, Northumberland was always a worthy VB opponent year in/year out.

Yes, Mathews is always a volleyball powerhouse. Superb coaching and well run program there.

I was told by folks from three of four different schools prior to last nights contest that Middlesex is expected to be the top team in the region this year. I think Middlesex went undefeated against Rapp last season.

I also said "Ahhh...what about Mathews, they are always the best around here?"

We will find out tonight....Rappahannock travels to the play the powerhouse Mathews Volleyball program.

A lot of people do not like the poster MGF's style and attacks....I do not know what the heck is going there in WP (or any of these new WP people) but he has confirmed a few rumors that made it to Tappahannock.

It's also volleyball, golf, competition cheer, field hockey, and cross country season according to the VHSL. Just because the majority of posts on here are about football doesn't mean other athletes don't put in work and deserve to be recognized as well.

Actually football has yet to play a competitive game that counts. By the time football plays a game that matters. Some Volleyball teams will have played 2 or 3 games. So in reality its Volleyball season.

Mathews may be down a "little" this year. They've graduated 1 state player of the year and 4 or 5 first team all state players the last two years. That's a lot of talent to replace. But if anyone can coach Pat can.

WP’s best years were where they were battling NK for District/regional/state titles. However, you’re totally right that Mathews is the undisputed consistent power in the Tidewater district. Gotta be some great coaching.
