One of the police officers here in the Press Box at Liberty was just saying that there are more fans already here than anticipated. A pretty significant traffic jam on 460 East bound with people trying to get here as we are less than 10 minutes away from kick-off between Magna Vista - the defending State Champ - and Lord Botetourt.

It's Magna Vista ball to start. Jacqez Hairston breaks off a 12-yard run and then zigs-zags for 46 more. Boy, he's breath-taking to watch. Warriors in business, at the Lord Botetourt 22-yard line on this opening series.

Good tackle by Lord Botetourt junior LB Grayson Bond on second down bringing up 3rd and short. The Cavaliers have stiffened and now Magna Vista will go for it on 4th & 6 from the 18. The Warriors are stopped again by Bond and company.

Lord Botetourt takes over at their own 20. It's 0-0 with 10:05 left in the 1st quarter.

Lord Botetourt is content keeping it on the ground. The Cavs and Coach Jamie Harless decide to go for it on 4th down like Magna Vista. Tailback Noah Fletcher moves the chains for a gain of 2 to their own 31.

Facing 4th & 1 from their own 40 yard line, it's Fletcher AGAIN moving the chains for Lord Botetourt.

Gutsy moves for Harless and they pay off both times.

Great tackle made moments ago by Magna Vista senior linebacker Keon Taylor. Lord Botetourt is facing 3rd & 16 and a short pass only nets a gain of 4. So this time on fourth down, the Cavaliers will punt it away.

Magna Vista will start its second possession at their own 23-yard line. It's still scoreless with 2:57 to go in the opening period.

Manga Vista running back Jacqez Hairston is showing why he ran for over 2000 yards during the season. He's already up to eight carries for 109 yards in this game... and the first quarter isn't even over!

Hairston just broke away for a 36-yard gain and it appeared he might go 56 for a touchdown before he stepped out of bounds. The Warriors appear primed to strike first in this one.

0:57 left 1stQ - Magna Vista 7, Lord Botetourt 0.

Magna Vista got on the board first with Shoalin McGuire (NC Central commit) firing a 25-yard touchdown pass to fellow senior Devin Johnston.

This Magna Vista offense has already out-gained Lord Botetourt 156-26, thanks in large part to Jacqez Hairston (9Car. 118Yds.). The Cavaliers badly need to move the ball past midfield and either knot it up or tilt field position.

End 1stQ - Magna Vista 7, Lord Botetourt 0

QB Ryan Fralin has completed both of his passes, but just for eight yards for Lord Botetourt. While the Cavs have converted both of their fourth down tries, they are 0-for-3 on third down.

QB Shoalin McGuire has completed both of his passes for Magna Vista; the difference is he has 34 yards and a TD pass to Devin Johnston.

Believe it or not, Botetourt has a 8:05 to 3:55 edge in Time of Possession, yet the quick-strike of Magna Vista has given them the lead and more favorable field position to work with to this point.

The Magna Vista defense has stepped forward with a couple of key plays. First it was Devin Johnson - who caught the touchdown pass earlier - with a pass breakup. On third down, it's Ryan Fralin sacked on third down by Magna Vista senior outside linebacker Devante Hailey.

Interesting to note - Hailey is a tiny fella, listed 5'4" and 168 pounds. As the coaches like to say, "it's not always the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog."

On their third possession, Magna Vista has an opportunity to stretch its 7-0 lead to double-figures. However, Lord Botetourt has other ideas and it's Matt Henderlite (6-3, 210 senior LB) with a sack to bring up 3rd & 9 from the Warriors' 29-yard line.

Warriors QB Shoalin McGuire shows good presence in the pocket, firing a 24-yard pass to Malik Morris, who Lord Botetourt fans were thinking fumbled as he was brought down. The refs say otherwise and Magna Vista is on the march again.

We have an injury time-out with 7:59 left in the second period. This fast-paced, no-huddle offense of Magna Vista is already up to 197 yards and they lead Lord Botetourt 7-0. The Warriors are at the 36-yard line of Lord Botetourt.

The play-action works for Magna Vista, pulling the Lord Botetourt defense to the left and then firing to the right as it's Shoalin McGuire throwing a 41-yard touchdown pass to D'Andra Hayden, who was completely wide open. The Cavaliers and their secondary were obviously focusing their attention to the other play-making receivers on the roster, Traveon Redd (Wake Forest commit) and Austin Perkins.

7:32 left 2ndQ - Magna Vista 13, Lord Botetourt 0.

McGuire's two-point conversion run was stopped. However, McGuire has himself a 398.3 rating right now folks - a perfect 5-of-5 for 99 yards, 2TD's, 0INT's. He's putting in work.

Trailing 13-0 in the second quarter, Lord Botetourt is lining up to go for it on fourth down for the third time in this first half. They won't need to, though. That's because Magna Vista jumps offsides.

A great run on 3rd & 4 as Lord Botetourt has moved into Magna Vista territory. Noah Fletcher sort of side-steps a defender and picks up 13 yards before he's brought down by Traveon Redd.

This is the type of drive that the Cavaliers desperately needed, and even though they are noticeably smaller up front in the trenches - the o-line is creating good running room for Noah Fletcher.

Lord Botetourt is on the board as they give Magna Vista a bit of their own medicine with a play-action fake. QB Ryan Fralin finds WR Garrison Mayo open in the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown pass. Fralin has effectively hit four different receivers on his completions. The PAT is good.

2:20 to go 2ndQ - Magna Vista 13, Lord Botetourt 7

We've got a ballgame. Will Lord Botetourt's defense be able to get a stop and go to half-time within a score now is the big question?

To answer the question at the end of my last post - no.

Magna Vista has Jacqez Hairston on its side and he's the best player on the field thus far... by far.

Hairston takes what appeared to be a little counter play, made a cut and he was gone - 80 yards to the house. PAT is good.

2:04 left 2ndQ - Magna Vista 20, Lord Botetourt 7.

Mr. Hairston now has 13 carries for 217 yards and a touchdown. On his way to a record-setting performance.

Ryan Fralin is trying to bring his team back in it and he takes off for an 11-yard gain as Magna Vista lost contain with the Cavs' QB maneuvering in the pocket.

The drive stalls, however, after a pass is incomplete by Fralin and could've been picked off by Traveon Redd, the star WR/DB for Magna Vista.

Lord Botetourt - which is 4-of-10 on third down and 2-for-2 on fourth down - will talk it over in a time-out here with 49 seconds left in the first half about whether or not to go for it on 4th & 8 at the Magna Vista 44-yard line.

Magna Vista remains in front, 20-7 as we near intermission.

A fake punt proves unsuccessful for Lord Botetourt as Magna Vista's Devin Johnston intercepts it with 42 seconds left in the half and returns it to the 38-yard line. That's the game's first turnover.

Johnston has made plays all over the field - a touchdown catch and a pass breakup earlier to go with this takeaway. He along with Jacqez Hairston and Shaolin McGuire have been the story for the Warriors, who lead it 20-7 on Lord Botetourt with 25 seconds left in the second period following a time-out.

Instead of being content going to the half with a 20-7 lead, Coach Joe Favero wanted more, but it nearly came back to bite Magna Vista as they were facing a 3rd & 38 from their own 10-yard line before electing to take a knee.

HALF - Magna Vista 20, Lord Botetourt 7

Coach Favero has to be pleased with everything else his offense has done outside of those last two plays before a knee as they've piled up 293 yards of offense to Lord Botetourt's 115. We'll have more stats in a bit... stay tuned!

Let's go through some of the numbers of this 3A State Football Championship at Lynchburg's Liberty University, where the defending Champ Magna Vista leads Lord Botetourt 20-7...

Stats at the Half:

Magna Vista 20:
Shoalin McGuire - 5-5 for 99Yds. 2-0TD/Int. ratio
Jacqez Hairston - 13Car. 217Yds. TD
Devin Johnston - 2Rec. 34Yds. TD; PBU, INT
Malik Morris - 2Rec. 24Yds.
D'Andra Hayden - 1Rec. 41Yds. TD
Trayvon Brunson - 7 Tackles (3 Solo)
Traveon Redd - 5 Tackles (4 Solo)

Lord Botetourt 7:
Ryan Fralin - 5-9 for 46Yds. 1-0TD/Int. ratio
Noah Fletcher - 16Car. 55Yds.
Garrison Mayo - 1Rec. 22Yds. TD; 3 Tackles
Tanner Hall - 1Rec. 12Yds.
Grayson Bond - 4 Tackles (3 Solo)

Magna Vista has 23 plays for 293 yards (18Car. 194Yds.), 2-4 on 3rd down
Lord Botetourt has 34 plays for 115 yards (24Car. 69Yds.), 4-10 on 3rd down

Hairston has been a beast through one half of play. You can see that Lord Botetourt misses the other part of their backfield combo, Bradley Lythgoe (VMI commit), who suffered an injury against Hopewell in the State Semis.

The Cavs have a decisive 16:12 to 7:48 advantage in Time of Possession. They trail it because they've yet to find the red zone and Magna Vista has reached the end zone three times, hitting big plays routinely when they've needed them.

We're moments away from the second half kick-off... stay tuned!

Start of the 3rd Quarter...

Lord Botetourt gets the ball to begin the second half and Noah Fletcher goes to work, hitting it outside for 12 yards. The Magna Vista defense has clamped down on some of the runs that the Cavs were having success early between the tackles as they are looking at 3rd & 6 when Ryan Fralin is sacked by Jason Scales.

Fralin is shaken up after the sack. Lord Botetourt will now punt it away for the third time in the ballgame. Magna Vista has yet to punt in this affair as they will get the ball back, trying to build on their 20-7 advantage.

The punt sails into the end zone for a touchback. Magna Vista begins at their own 20.

Jacqez Hairston is simply unstoppable right now.

He breaks off a 60-yard touchdown run to push Magna Vista's lead to three scores on Lord Botetourt.

His speed has been too much for this Lord Botetourt defense and he's clearly saved his best for last. Kicker Lake Eanes made his third extra point of the day

7:33 left 3rdQ - Magna Vista 27, Lord Botetourt 7.

For those keeping track of the constantly changing totals for Hairston - who might be on his way to a 400-yard day - he's up to 17 carries for 296 yards and 2TD's.

Phenomenal effort.

Wow! That might be the single best performance that the state has seen in a title game since Percy Harvin in 2004!

Lord Botetourt does not help themselves when they get the ball back, going 3 and out. The Magna Vista defense has really contained the running game of the Cavaliers well, not allowing them to break off a run longer than 13 yards.

Magna Vista's Devin Johnston bobbles a punt inside the 5 and takes it back near the Warriors' own 30-yard line, getting a couple of blocks along the way. The Warriors are on the move again as Traveon Redd catches his first pass of the afternoon on a quick screen. Magna Vista is now past midfield and looking to add to their 27-7 lead late in the third quarter.

This one has now turned into a rout. Magna Vista goes 10 plays, 70 yards in 3:42, capped on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Shoalin McGuire to Wake Forest commit Traveon Redd.

The PAT is no good.

2:24 to go 3rdQ - Magna Vista 33, Lord Botetourt 7

Since Lord Botetourt cut into the lead at 13-7 in the second quarter, Magna Vista has responded with 20 unanswered points.

Wow! That might be the single best performance that the state has seen in a title game since Percy Harvin in 2004!

Yeah, both Jason Stamm and me sitting up here agree. Right now he's 67 yards shy with 2:10 to play in the third quarter (and Magna Vista is getting the ball back up 33-14) of breaking the VHSL Playoff Record in a single game held by Woodbridge's Russell Davis. Back in 1974, Davis ran for 384 yards on Lee-Davis.

Lord Botetourt didn't waste any time to try to get back in the game as they turned to their star running back, Noah Fletcher. He breaks off a 61-yard TD run to give the Cavs' fans some hope. The PAT is good.

2:10 left 3rdQ - Magna Vista 33, Lord Botetourt 14.

All of the sudden, Lord Botetourt may be back in this game.

Wow. In a span of 12 seconds - Lord Botetourt finds the end zone twice, with an onside kick recovered sandwiched in between.

Carlton Emerson I thought had the onside kick recovery, but the stats say it was Jarrett Wilson. Nonetheless, the Cavaliers come up with another touchdown as Garrison Mayo takes a reverse 40 yards to paydirt.

The Lord Botetourt fans are suddenly boisterous.

1:58 left 3rdQ - Magna Vista 33, Lord Botetourt 21.

This one became wild in a hurry. And expect Hairston to start getting the ball again for Magna Vista as he inches closer to that State Playoff record.

With 1:33 left in the third quarter and Magna Vista leading Lord Botetourt 33-21, we have an injury on the field and it's Ryan Fralin of the Cavaliers. He's the starting quarterback and a starter on defense in the secondary. After a few minutes, Fralin gets up to cheers. Fans were chanting his name, "Ryan," moments before he got up off the turf.

In this fast-paced, blink and you'll miss something State Final at Liberty, Magna Vista has the ball and is on the move. Coach Joe Favero's Warriors are looking at 3rd & 1 from the 32-yard line of Lord Botetourt.

Jacqez Hairston is stopped for no gain by Matt Henderlite, who has stepped up from his linebacker position today. Magna Vista goes for it and Shoalin McGuire bowls into a defender, picking up enough to move the chains on 4th & 1.

We've reached the end of three periods and what was looking like a blowout is now a competitive battle with just 12 minutes away from deciding who the 3A State Champ for 2015 will be...

End 3rdQ - Magna Vista 33, Lord Botetourt 21

Magna Vista out-gained Lord Botetourt 137-83 in the third quarter, but the Cavaliers thanks to a pair of touchdowns in a 12-second span and successful onside kick still have a shot if their defense can hold the Warriors to a field goal try or get a stop.

Gotta give kudos to the Magna Vista offensive line - Jordon Lawson, Bryar Turner, Caleb Carter, Corey Turner and Blake Hankins. They've opened up running lanes for Jacqez Hairston to pick up 352 yards and 2TD's on 26 carries, plus they've kept Shoalin McGuire upright without getting sacked through three quarters of play.

Magna Vista is facing a 4th & 11 from the 29-yard line of Lord Botetourt as we tick down near 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

A big catch worth 19 yards by D'Andra Hayden, who caught the game's second touchdown (which seems like ions ago) to move the chains for Magna Vista facing a 4th & 11. A bold move by Coach Joe Favero going for it there and his team leading it 33-21, but he knows another TD here could be the knockout punch that they need to put pesky Lord Botetourt away

A pass on 3rd & 7 from the 7-yard line of Lord Botetourt is incomplete by Magna Vista. A time-out by the Warriors, who are probably pondering the idea of kicking a 24-yard field goal rather than trying to get the score given that they lead 33-21 and can make Lord Botetourt have to score twice with the need of a two-point conversion in one of those scores in order to win or force overtime.

On 4th & 7, Magna Vista goes empty backfield, 5-wide. My initial thinking was they might use Jacqez Hairston for a jet sweep and let him get the corner and out-run everybody (which he's done all game).

Instead, the first read isn't there for Shoalin McGuire as he drops back to pass. McGuire rips away from an oncoming tackler and muscles his way into the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown to ice the game. The PAT is good.

8:27 to play - Magna Vista 40, Lord Botetourt 21

McGuire has had himself a pretty good day too; 11-14 for 162 yards, 3TD's, 0INT's, plus a TD run now.

Following the Magna Vista 13-play, 51-yard drive that lasted 5:30 to give them a 40-21 lead on Lord Botetourt, the Cavaliers are forced to abandon the run and go to the air. Making them pay is Wake Forest commit Traveon Redd with an interception.

On the return, Redd ran into his own teammate, linebacker Jason Scales. Both of them appear to be okay. Lord Botetourt's Grant Leonard also took a big lick and after some attention from the medical staff he is able to get up under his own power.

Back to action now - Magna Vista leads it 40-21 with 7:39 remaining and the Warriors have it at the Cavaliers' 36-yard line.

Magna Vista continues to hum offensively as they've done all day and all season long for that matter. The Warriors find the end zone again on QB Shoalin McGuire's 4th touchdown pass - this one a 30-yard connection to D'Andra Hayden. It is the second scoring reception on the afternoon for Hayden.

All these receivers for Magna Vista - Hayden, Malik Morris, Devin Johnston and Wake Forest commit Traveon Redd - have had their way with the Lord Botetourt defense. So too having a big day is Jacqez Hairston, now 32 yards shy of tying the State Playoff record for rushing yards in a contest as he sits as 352 on the afternoon.

5:52 to play - Magna Vista 47, Lord Botetourt 21.

Though the numbers might not indicate it today, Garrison Mayo has had himself one terrific postseason for Lord Botetourt. He came in with three interceptions over the past two games and has been a threat the entire playoffs on offense.

Speaking of Mayo, he goes 15 yards on a run as the Cavaliers cross midfield. While the Lord Botetourt offense has had its moment in piling up 270 yards, they've been not nearly as explosive as Magna Vista, which has a whopping 551 yards (and it would be more if not for 14 penalties for 101 yards).

Facing a 4th & 4 at the Magna Vista 23-yard line, QB Ryan Fralin completes a pass to Mayo down to the 14-yard line before he is tackled by Jacqez Hairston.

Lord Botetourt on fourth down inside the 10-yard line of Magna Vista. The Magna Vista defense didn't stop them earlier in the game on fourth down, but has come up with two timely stops in the second half in those situations.

It appears Jacqez Hairston will finish 32 yards rushing shy of tying the State Playoff record for a single game as the Warriors are taking a knee now with under two minutes to play. Nonetheless, his 352-yard effort today (3rd most in VHSL playoff game history) was magical.

Hairston Runs Magna Vista To Title 47-21
By Jason Stamm

LYNCHBURG, Va.— A state record didn’t fall, but in the VHSL Class 3A state championship game Saturday, it came awfully close.

Senior running back Jacqez Hairston ran wild as Magna Vista used it offense to roll to a second straight state title. Hairston finished with 352 yards rushing and a pair of touchdown on 28 carries as the Warriors rolled to a 47-21 win over Lord Botetourt.

"It don't even hit you for a while," senior wide receiver Devin Johnston said. "It takes a month. It just feels like we won a regular game."

Hairston finished just short of the VHSL record for most yards in a state playoff game, 384 yards by Woodbridge’s Russell Davis in 1974. The Warriors’ offense put up 548 yards in total, compared to just 287 by the Cavaliers.

"Once I break one, it feels like when I get the ball again, I'm gonna break another one," Hairston said. "I've just got that feeling in my mind."

Senior quarterback Shoalin McGuire completed 12 of 15 passes for 192 yards and four touchdowns.

"Sometimes you're the windshield and sometimes you're the bug," Lord Botetourt coach Jamie Harless said. "Today, it felt like we were the bug."

Magna Vista didn’t waste too much time after winning the coin toss. On its first play from scrimmage, Hairston picked up 12 yards on a run up the middle. On the very next play, Hairston burst through the line and took off down the left sideline. He cut all the way across the field, but not before he was taken down after a 46-yard gain to the Lord Botetourt 22 yard-line. The drive stalled however and on fourth and six, Hairston took a pitch from and was stopped at the 20 yard-line.

On their ensuing drive, the Cavaliers converted a pair of fourth and one tries on their side of the field, but was still forced to punt. Hairston took off again on the Warriors’ next possession, getting 36 yards on a run up the middle, but it was McGuire who got them on the scoreboard. Poised in pocket, McGuire threw a 25-yard laser to Johnston at the goal line. He was tackled into the end zone for a touchdown to give Magna Vista a 7-0 lead with 57 seconds left in the opening quarter.

After another Lord Bortetourt punt, McGuire connected with senior receiver Malik Morris for a 24-yard pass over the middle. Four plays later, McGuire play actioned to his left and threw to his left, where he hit senior receiver D’Andra Hayden wide open streaking down the right side of the field for a 41-yard touchdown. McGuire was stopped short on a two-point conversion attempt, but the Warriors had a commanding 13-0 lead with 7:32 left in the second quarter.

Lord Botetourt would respond to stay in the game early. The Cavaliers converted a fourth and two thanks to a Magna Vista offsides penalty near midfield. Four plays after senior tailback Noah Fletcher picked up 13 yards, senior quarterback Ryan Fralin did his own play action to the right, stood tall in the pocket and launched a 22-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Garrison Mayo with 2:20 left in the first half. That got Lord Botetourt within 13-7.

That bit of momentum was short-lived, though. On the Warriors’ first play from scrimmage, Hairston took off down the right side like a slingshot. He weaved in and out of defenders before crossing across the field 80 yards for a touchdown to extend Magna Vista’s lead to 20-7, which it took into halftime.

Hairston’s numbers were a bit mind-blogging at intermission. He had 217 yards on just 13 carries. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers had just 115 yards of total offense.

After Lord Botetourt opened the third quarter with a punt, Hairston took off again. This time, he ripped a 60-yard run up the gut of the field for a touchdown with 7:33 left on the third quarter game clock.

Following another Cavaliers punt, the Warriors flexed their muscle a bit with a 10-play, 70-yard drive that included runs of 17 and eight yards by Hairston. The drive was capped when McGuire found senior receiver Traveon Redd on a slant pass. Redd juked a defender and made his way into the end zone for 20-yard touchdown. Magna Vista missed the extra point, but with 2:24 in the third quarter, had a one-sided 33-7 lead.

Lord Botetourt certainly wasn’t done, though, and proved it on its first play of the next drive. Fletcher got loose and took off down the left sideline for a 60-yard touchdown. The Cavaliers then attempted and recovered an onside kick at the Magna Vista 45 yard-line. On the very next play, Mayo took a hand-off off of a reverse and bolted straight up the middle, then cut to his right for a 45-yard touchdown haunt. After two touchdowns in 12 seconds, the Cavaliers trimmed their deficit to 33-21.

"We saw the momentum start to shift and we had to stop it right there," Redd said. "We had to get the ball back to the offense, let them run the clock out and score, get back on defense. We had to get the momentum back on our side."

But the Warriors sapped away the excitement that Lord Botetourt had created. Magna Vista used a 13-play, 51-yard drive that took 5:30 and included a 17-yard run by Hairston. The defining moment of the drive, though, was a 19-yard pass from McGuire to Hayden on fourth and 11 at the Cavaliers’ 29 yard-line. On yet another fourth down, this time with goal to go, McGuire scrambled to his right and got into the end zone with a seven-yard run. With 8:27 left in the game, the Warriors’ advantage grew to 40-21.

"We talked about the kick, but we decided to go for it," Magna Vista coach Joe Favero said. "Our offense, when you have 500-something yards of offense, you feel like fourth and 11 is not too dangerous to go for it. The kids made a great play."

Defensively, Magna Vista made sure it had the momentum as well. Redd intercepted a lame duck pass by Fralin and returned the ball to the Lord Botetourt 36 yard-line. After Hairston took off for a 17-yard run, McGuire tossed up a 30-yard to Hayden, who was wide open again, streaking down the right sideline for a touchdown. The Warriors had broken the lead back open, at 47-21 with 5:52 to play, a score that held up.

"I kinda wanna say it was sweeter last year," Redd said. "We were coming in and it was our very first week. We'd never been in a situation like this and we won. So I think last year felt better. This year, we had a little swagger like 'We've been here before. We can do this, we've got what it takes to do this.'"

Magna Vista finished the season 13-2, while Lord Botetourt falls to 13-2.
