Blog Game Blog - Dinwiddie 27, Salem 20

This one has become a turnover and flag fest. Dinwiddie commits its 3rd turnover of the night - the game's 7th - as Salem lineman Da'Jon Cardwell I believe recovered the loose pigskin. So Salem now has it at their own 33, still trailing the Generals 21-13 as we tick down with under 3 minutes to go in the 3rd period.

Salem five turnovers. Hurt Qb. Already missing 2 offensive lineman

By my count 4 (but I could've missed one)... your point well taken. They look as if they just want to get out of this one alive, with the backup QB in... like that they continue to compete despite this becoming a sloppy, mistake-filled game on both sides.

On 3rd & long a great pass from Hunter Chaney, the sophomore, to TE Avery Close into double coverage and he catches the ball on a frozen rope.

Salem has a fresh set of downs at their own 45-yard line and Isaiah Persinger gets about 4 yards on a draw before being tripped up by Desmond Green.

ANOTHER turnover - the 5th as @southbottomU just pointed out a second ago - on a fumble. Looked like William Simmons of the Generals recovered.

Cirdale Luccess gains a good 15 yards before Chauncey Logan tackles him. With a split-back formation, the Generals give it right back to Luccess and he gains a few more, but a holding will bring it back and take Dinwiddie out of the red zone area.

As Dinwiddie gets close to scoring, the Salem defense buckles down. On 3rd down - a great defensive stop by Chandler Sutphin of the Spartans.

So Dinwiddie will go for it on 4th & 10 from the Salem 28-yard line about... however, time expires in the 3rd quarter and we'll change sides. We think. Refs are gathering to see if time expired or somebody flinched on the line of scrimmage.

After discussing, the officials call a false start. So it'll be interesting to see what Billy Mills and company dial up... because the quarter cannot end on a penalty.

Correction on my part -- that pass was 4th & 15, not 3rd & 15. So Salem takes over. Action coming so fast and furious it's hard to keep up with it all.

To begin the 4th period, a great run by Isaiah Persinger up to the 44-yard line of the Spartans.

With Salem at the Dinwiddie 49-yard line on 3rd & 4 - it's Salem pitching out to Isaiah Persinger, who seems to have run it even stronger in the past few plays, but he's stopped by Robert Barlow. Salem will punt it away on 4th down with plenty of time to go in this one.

Cedric Drumgoole comes up with another timely catch - a 30-yard touchdown pass from QB K'ymon Pope. We think. The officials are discussing it... this could be coming back on a penalty.

Well, Navy Nation rejoices as the flag is waved off and the cannon fires off with the Generals now in front 27-13, pending the PAT.

Turnovers and miscues plaguing the injury-riddled Spartans. But Dinwiddie has to be encouraged they've seen some pass catchers step up without Cla'Trey Reese, one of their dynamic weapons in the air attack.

A big-time hit from Antonio Tucker of Dinwiddie on Chandler Sutphin on 2nd down.

On 3rd & 2 at the 24-yard line of Dinwiddie, the Spartans will call a time-out with 8:08 remaining. Check that, time-out by Billy Mills and the Generals to get their defense a quick second to catch their breath. Salem's offense has been kept in check. Without Jack Gladden and a backup QB, Coach Mags may not be as inclined to try that play-action fake and hit the FB (Sutphin) or TE (Avery Close).

A great run on 3rd & 2 by Zavione Wood of Salem before #42 Jordan Bracey of Dinwiddie brings him down at the 2-yard line. Wood's 22-yard scamper is his longest of the night. Salem is knocking on the door and can they punch it in?

Chandler Sutphin loses a yard, well actually about 2 to 3. Don't think Salem will go to a pass on 2nd & Goal, though they might roll-out with Hunter Chaney and let him keep it....

They actually decide to keep it on the ground between the tackles with Persinger. D'Anta Johnson stuffs him for no gain. Now a crucial 3rd & Goal upcoming...

The sophomore Zavione Wood makes a great dive towards the goal-line and he's about inches short. Looked to me like he might've got in... football is definitely a game of inches.

4th & Goal now...

On 4th & Goal from the 1-inch line - the fullback and hard-hitting linebacker Bobby Pinello comes up with the touchdown to keep Salem alive in this one. He's their short-yardage go-to guy.

PAT to come now.

Salem will not go away. Even without Jack Gladden, they come up with a timely stop, a crucial return in the special teams department and they rise to the occasion on 4th & Goal after falling short on some fourth downs earlier in the game.

Dinwiddie has to be careful for a squib / onside / pooch here...

Tyre' Dalton races 58 yards to pay-dirt... unfortunately for Dinwiddie, a penalty brings it back.

Salem freshman Chauncey Logan has shown a lot of promise tonight, but he still got an earful from one of the coaches for missing the tackle on Dalton. He's probably the gladdest that Dinwiddie had a penalty.

Bobby Pinello comes in like a heat-seeking missile to clean up Dalton.

Dinwiddie is facing 3rd & 5 from the 50 roughly and K'ymon Pope is tackled near the sideline, if not out of bounds, about a yard or two shy with 3:54 remaining in the game. Coach Mills has the confidence in his offense for sure to go for this and try to go for the killshot on this pesky Spartans group.

Billy Mills decides to go with the quick-kick punt by K'ymon Pope instead and play field position with a 7-point lead and less than four minutes to play. He's also got a great amount of faith in his defense.

The punt lands at the 15-yard line. Can Salem go 85 yards with a backup quarterback on the road? If they do, it'll be some kind of story for sure.

On the first play from scrimmage, Isaiah Persinger puts the jets once he gets some daylight along the left sideline. K'ymon Pope finally pushes him out in Dinwiddie territory, at the 48-yard line, with 3:33 to play. By my completely unofficial count, that puts Persinger over 100 yards - at about 104 - for the evening.

Hunter Chaney's 2nd & 10 pass to Chase Ferris is ruled incomplete. Salem's coaches are insisting that Ferris was able to secure the catch before going to the ground. That would've brought up 3rd & 1. Nonetheless, the referees' opinion is the only one that matters.

On 3rd & 10 - Chaney delivers a long pass that is incomplete and gets hit by D'anta Johnson on the attempt.

Now 4th & 10, game on the line, for the visiting Spartans. Robert Barlow is playing hurt on the back end for Dinwiddie as well...

The 4th & 10 pass is incomplete, intended for Ezchan Kasey, is incomplete. So Dinwiddie takes over at their own 48-yard line with 2:36 to play.

Dinwiddie leads it 27-20. But the Generals back up 5 yards on a delay of game penalty.

There's that man again - #17 Avery Close - from his defensive end spot to sniff out the run with Tyre' Dalton. Both Close and LB Bobby Pinello have undoubtedly been the two best defensive players on the field for Salem if you ask me. They are seemingly in on every play when the Spartans stop Dinwiddie.

Multiple Salem defenders swarm to the outside on 2nd down and Dinwiddie now is facing 3rd & 13 from their own 45. Stephen Magenbauer was able to save some time and burn a time-out on that last play, too.

Salem couldn't have asked for a better stand defensively as K'ymon Pope only gains a few. Another chance comes the way of Spartans sophomore backup QB Hunter Chaney - who probably didn't expect to play tonight and was forced into action when starter Jack Gladden suffered an injury early in the third period.

Dinwiddie's defensive backs have to feel pretty good about containing the 2-minute drill considering they have three interceptions tonight.

A 75-yard punt return for a TD by Shawn Collins of Salem was wiped away as there were multiple block in the back penalties called.

Coach Mags will shake his head about that later because, while Collins might not have scored without one of those blocks in the back, what it does is put Salem back inside its own 20-yard line. It'll be at their own 16 to be exact.

With 1:23 to play and just one time-out, that pretty much takes the run out of the equation for the Spartans.

1st & 10 own 16 for Salem - pass intended for TE Avery Close is incomplete. Dinwiddie had at least three defenders in the backfield, including D'Anta Johnson (#56).

2nd & 10 own 16 for Salem - Chaney drops back and is it incomplete, just short intended for Close as Desmond Green was in on the coverage.

1:11 left and Salem facing 3rd & 10 with their tenth grader QB.

On 3rd & 10 from own 16 - we've got laundry as Salem is whistled for illegal substitution.

3rd & 15 no from own 11 - and QB Hunter Chaney is picked off by Robert Barlow on his chuck and pray pass.

Salem not blessed with the game breakers so when they have the mistakes and injuries they had tonight it makes it very difficult for them to be successful. Dinwiddie did a great job.

Would concur with you on that assessment. Dinwiddie left some points on the field, but capitalized when they need to... QB/DB Pope, WR/DB Barlow, RB Drumgoole and DB/RB Luccess all made timely plays as well as Edwards and Simmons in the trenches.

Salem missed having a player like Viante Tucker in that spot last night. They have some talented young pups at the WR and DB spots - such as Chauncey Logan and Shawn Collins - and they'll be better at the end of the season than they are now.

Both teams are capable of hooking up again in the State Final. Enough talent and both have top of the line coaching staffs. All that being said, injuries aside, the game got a little too sloppy and mistake prone for my taste... and with Class 4 having so many contenders (Sherando, Lake Taylor, Lafayette, Eastern View, Jefferson Forest, E.C. Glass + others), these two squads are going to have to be much shaper once the postseason arrives to get there to Liberty University in December and play for the Class 4 crown.
